A friend suggested I do a reaction vid on this song, so I decided to go in totally blind and do a 100% first reaction. What I found was surprising ...

You may not have noticed, his guitar is mic'd up and he has a mic on his gown lapel. This is a live "one take" video from beginning to end. It is shot with 3 cameras and it took Ren several attempts to get the one he selected for this video. Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole. I am an older person and have to say that Ren is the most exciting musical artist of my time. No genre defines him.

Older person as well and just came across Ren today. Holycrappola, Ren makes me remember just how good music use to be...before the record labels destroyed creativity and latitude to sing whatever they wanted to. It's also why I tend to prefer indi. So glad I found this kid. He's phenomenal!

Hi Ren is not a one-take in the true sense of the term. Apart from having cuts, towards the end they switch to a handheld camera so those shots are from a separate take. Samuel Perry-Falvey has clarified that in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to the song.

For REN, this was truly his reality. Ren had misdiagnosed Lyme disease for 7 years by conventional doctors who deemed him mentally ill, but when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms.

Ren suffered through most if his 20s with disabiling pain, fatigue, brain and neurological difficulties due to misdiagnosed Lyme disease. Told it was all in his head and given psychoactive drugs that made things worse. His immune system is still so damaged, he can only eat about 5 foods. Througj all of this, music was his therapy. He writes, sings, raps, plays numerous instruments and crosses genres with ease. I urge you to explore morevof his work. I suggest Crutch, written in the depths of his illness when he was literally afraid of losing his mind. Chalk Outlines live with Chinchilla and How to be Me also with Chinchilla.

The intro tells the whole story, the good side the nice melody and the bad side the raw “off notes” and then the sorrowful falsetto repeated at the end with joy as now that he feels he has learned to cope with his illness, if you watch more Ren get used to saying wow at the end lol. This was all done in one take with 4 different cameras although Ren says it took 4 takes to get this one.

Ren has some of everything musically. Lately he's been doing Hip Hop and is about to release an album in that genre but it isn't really his main style. He calls his style Bardcore but I don't think trying to define him is wise because the next song you listen too will undo whatever you settle on. Ren can make you cry, make you laugh, and make you cringe. He can be raunchy, and he can be sweet... he is the ultimate box of chocolates.

Oh second comment. I noted you had the "F" word censored out. This is a disservice to the artist who places one of the commonest profanities in English language to intensify or convey disdain and is used here as an expression of anger or annoyance (Collins dictionary). If you react to the Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full) you need to leave profanities in or you will risk missing the message and lose reaction views. I have watched many Ren reactions and you are only the second I have viewed with this limitation on. Just saying. I do like your reaction though. Cheers.

He is currently releasing a new album, he decided to make a rap album, in which he did all of the production, because he wanted to try something different and fun. He explores so many musical genres he can't be classified into any one. Have fun going down the Ren Rabbit Hole, so many of us have, all ages, kids to seniors, across the world. Great reaction, New Sub. Here are the lyrics if you want them👇 Hi there Ren It's been a little while, Did you miss me? You thought you’d buried me, didn't you? Risky… Because I always come back Deep down you know that… Deep down you know I'm always in periphery Ren aren't you pleased to see me? it's been weeks since we spoke bro, you know you need me You’re the sheep, I'm the shepherd Not your place to lead me Not your place to be biting off the hand that feeds me Hi Ren I’ve been taking some time to be distant I’ve been taking some time to be still I've been taking some time to be by myself since my therapist told me I'm ill I've been making some progress lately, and I've learnt some new coping skills So I haven't really needed you much man I think we need to just step back and chill Ren, you sound more insane than I do You think that those doctors are really there to guide you? Been through this a million times Your civilian mind is so perfect at always being lied to Okay, take another pill boy Drown yourself in the sound of white noise Follow this 10 step program, rejoice! All your problems will be gone! Fucking dumb boy Nah mate, this time it's different man trust me I feel like things might be falling in place And my music's been kinda doing bits too Like I actually might do something great And when I'm gone maybe I'll be remembered For doing something special with myself That's why I don't think that we should talk man Cause when your with me it never seems to help You think that you can amputate me? I am you, you are me, you are I, I am we We are one, split in two that makes one so you see You got to kill you if you wanna kill me. I'm not left over dinner, I’m not scraps on the side, oh your music is thriving? Delusional guy! Where's your top ten hit? Where's your interview with Oprah? Where are your grammes Ren? Nowhere! Yeah but, my music's not commercial like that I never chased numbers, statistics or stats I Never write hooks for the radio, they never even play me so why would Iconcernn myself with that? But my music is really connecting, And the people who find it respect it , And for me that's enough ‘cause this life's been tough so it gives me a purpose I can rest in Man you sound so pretentious ! Ren your music is so self centred, No one wants to hear another song about how much you hate yourself… trust me You should be so lucky having me inside you to guide you, remind you to manage expectations, provide you perspective, that thing you neglected, I get it You wana be a big deal… Next jimi hendrix? forget it Man it's not like that Man it's just like that I'm inside you you twat Nah it's not man your wrong, when I write I belong Let me break the fourth wall by acknowledging this song Ren sits down, Has a stroke of genius, He wants to write a song that was not done previous A battle with his subconscious… Eminem did it Played on guitar Plan B did it Man your not original you criminal, rip off artist, the pinnacle of your success is stealing other people's material Ren mate we've heard it all before Ohh "she sell sea shells on the sea shore" Fuck you I don't need you, I don't need to hear this, cause I'm fine by myself, I'm a genius! and I will be great, and I will make waves, and ill shake up the whole world beneath us That's right speak your truth, your fucking god complex leaks out of you It's refreshing to actually hear you say it! In stead of down play it… “Oh the music Is all about the creative process and if people can find something to relate to within that the that's just a bonus” Fuck you ima fucking kill you Ren Well fucking kill me then let's fucking have you Ren I'm a do it, watch me prove it, who are you to doubt my music? ‘Cause I call the shots I choose if you die Yeah I call the shots and so i who choose who survives I'll tie you up in knots then I'll lock you inside News flash… I was created at the dawn of creation, I am temptation I am the snake in Eden, I am the reason for treason Beheading all Kings, I am sin with no rhyme or reason, Sun of the morning, Lucifer, Antichrist, father of lies, Mestophilies, Truth in a blender, Deceitful pretender, The Banished avenger, The righteous surrender When standing in-front of my solar eclipse, My name it is stitched to your lips so see I won't bow to the will of a mortal, feeble and normal You wana kill me? I'm enteral, immortal I live in every decision that catalysed chaos That causes division I live inside death, the beginning of ends I am you, you are me, I am you Ren Hi Ren… I’ve been taking some time to be distant, I’ve been taking some time to be still I’ve been taking some time to be by myself and I've spent half my life ill But just as sure as the tide start turning Just as sure as the night has dawn Just as sure as rain fall soon runs dry when you stand in the eye of the storm I was made to be tested and twisted I was made to be broken and beat I was made by his hand, it's all part of the plan that I stand on my own two feet And you know me my will is eternal And you know me you've met Me before Face to with a beast I will rise from the east and I'll settle on the ocean floor And I go by many names also Some people know me as hope Some people know me as the voice that you hear when u loosen the noose on the rope And you know how I know how I know that I'll prosper? Because I stand here beside you today I have stood in the flames that cremated my brain And I didn't once flinch or shake So cower at the man I've become When I sing from the top of my lungs That I won't retire I'll stand in your fire inspire the meek to be strong And when I am gone I will rise In the music that I left behind Ferocious persistent, immortal like you we’re a coin with two different sides When I was 17 years old I shouted out into an empty room, into a blank canvas, that I would defeat the forces of evil, and for the next 10 years of my life I suffered the consequences... With Illness, autoimmunity and psychosis As I got older I realised that there were no real winners or no real losers in physiological warfare But there were victims and there were students It wasn’t David verses Goliath, it's was a pendulum eternally swaying between the dark and the light, and the brighter the light shone, the darker the shadow it cast It was never a battle for me to win, it was an eternal dance, and like a dance, the more rigid I became the harder it got The more I cursed my clumsy footsteps the more i suffered And so I got older and I learned to relax, and I learned to soften, and that dance got easier It is this eternal waltz that separates human beings from angels, from demons, from gods And I must not forget, we must not forget, that we are human beings.

Those are very well transcribed lyrics! I am so used to seeing problems in llyrics. (I am a technical writer and I notice a lot!) Something here that I believe is incorrect: I have always thought it was "And when I am gone I will RIDE......" (not rise). Sounds like ride when sung, and ride rhymes better with the end of the next line, behind. This is important to me because it is my favorite lyric of the song, the image of him gone but still there riding on the music he left behind.

Im going to wait and see if you actually do react to more Ren before I subscribe. You sounded very iffy, my friend. Not sure at all what your issue is. Considering this is live, with ambient acoustics and two extremely diverse personas, I think every 'mistake' makes it that much better sonically, and more importantly, resonates deeper with truth for the people, most especially, that live every day of their lives in darkness and despair and hopelessness. There are so many of us that felt 'seen' for the first time by this performance. I hope you take that into consideration.

He speaks very truly on the eternal dance. I'm in my forties, and have had this struggle since I was 5. This man puts into words something I've only learned for myself a couple of years ago. Take it to heart, everyone. It would have saved me decades of unhappiness. Especially don't measure yourself against others to find your worth. It isn't a fair assessment. Just strive to be the best YOU that you can. We need more individuals out there anyway. 😊

Welcome to the Reniverse, some call it the Ren aissance and some devote Rensdays to do reviews on his prolific and non Genre specific music. His collaborations with Chinchilla, Liv Sangster, Sam Tompkins and others are all must watch/listen pieces his time with the bands The Big Push and Trick the Fox as well as his solo performances are brilliant. His health problems aside he was born with an iron lung and a few spare oxygen bottles built in with some of his more rap orientated songs playing out in double and triple time and what appears to be the ability to sing/speak/rap without breath for 3 or 4 minutes straight. Thanks for the review new sub and a huge like given.

I've probably watched at least a couple dozen Ren reaction videos and this was hands down far and away the very best one yet, thank you! I'm so glad you didn't give up midway through (I'm assuming it was the cursing? Usually that's not bleeped out.). Normally I'm happy to see people react strongly at the places I react to, but this was even better. I loved seeing how deeply thoughtful you were as you watched it. And, most important of all, you are the only person who didn't see it as all about mental health, which has been driving me crazy. Maybe it's our age, but Hi Ren is so so much bigger than mental health. In fact, I think everyone is just bonkers endlessly swimming through their navals at every opportunity. I mean, I'm all for therapy, but some things are just bigger. And, yes, good vs. evil is the bigger battle I see here. Ren wouldn't have a mental health problem if he weren't beset with such horrendous battles since a teenager. When you brought up that it was about lightness and darkness, good and evil, I nearly jumped out of my chair then shouted YES in my empty room, lol. I've been waiting for that connection with someone for a long time since none of my family or friends get it or would even listen. Thanks, and I've subbed, hoping you will do a deeper dive in the near future.

Good on you! You will be experiencing any/ all of the following: a bit confused, didn’t expect that, trying to figure it out, awe will creep in, you’ll smile at Ren being funny drenched in sarcasm, pulled in by the lyrics and the musicality and in the end you will be speechless. Ren is special, VERY SPECIAL! A good majority of his music is very meaningful and has true substance.

I’d suggest next what I consider his masterpiece “The tale of Jenny and Screech” you must watch all *three*as one piece! Next, a busking video w his band The Big Push, “I shot the sheriff/Road to Zion/hiphop”.. Then “The HUNGER”, and after that you will be well on your way into one of the biggest rabbit holes you’ll ever encounter…. And you will go down it; Ren is a once in a generation talent.

Welcome to the RENaissance! I highly suggest following up with The Tale of Jenny and Screech (FULL), then his duets with Chinchilla Chalk Outlines (Live), and How To Be Me (Live), which is a song about his friend Joe who committed suicide (his song Suicide is also about this, as well as his song For Joe). For palate cleansers, his straight rapping is fun too, like The Hunger, Sick Boi, Illest of Our Time, and Animal Flow (acoustic). Enjoy the genius that is Ren!

With art, and especially music, it becomes so much more interesting when the creations are done because the artist has a vision, something to say, or a message to convey and does so on their own terms and conditions. Sadly, most music nowadays are instead constructed with the intention to try to please the audience. Thus, the musicians (driven by the record companies) writes music that they think the audience wants to hear instead of composing freely what they think are interesting and relevant. Wasn’t really like that in the ‘60s and ‘70s when so many experimental bands wrote meaningful and interesting music the gave rise to new musical genres. Therefore so refreshing to hear Ren composing the music and lyric he finds relevant from his experience and perspective. Also very evident that he attracts a broad and huge audience including many that has turned off the radio for the last 40 years or so. Hope and think that he inspires new musicians to follow. Great also to see that it is possible to use YT as a platform for artists that are sick of the music industry and want to pursue their own independent careers producing the music that they like themselves!

I first discovered Ren about a month ago. I'm 65 year's old, and have had the pleasure living through a time of the most interesting and incredible music as a young man in the 60's, 70's and to some extent the 80's. Anyway, Ren has actually gotten me listening to music again. Ive been obsessed with his talent and realness of story telling. I've watched at least 50 reaction videos of a bunch of his songs. I can't wait for more ! If you haven't already, I would suggest listening to his song Suicide or the trio of Jenny , Screech and Violets Tales ! You will be even more amazed with this young man's talent. I promise !

He is being REAL and RAW. That's what got you, like all of us millions of people around the world. Because it's HUMAN. Because we all have our struggles. But it was "not nice" or "not normal" to show it. So we all learnt to hide it and that made us very sick, suffering and unhappy. That's why we cry watching this song. That's why it's so liberating. It's a relief. Just take a breath. Take a break. Life is about positive and negative, we just have to accept it and dance with it. And it's ok.

Ren does just about everything himself. The lyrics, music, beats, production for his music and directs his videos. He really likes to do them live and in one continuous shot. This is the only live that has multiple camera angles, but all of it was from the same take, they just had several cameras set up. I think I've seen Chalk Outlines, the tales trilogy, and How to Be Me recommended - those are all live and one take as well. I'm glad you finished the song. It's just one of those things that is confusing, sucks you in and leaves you feeling like WTF did I just listen to/watch? And then you have to just sit and process it for a bit, think about it and listen again. The bulk of Ren's hardcore fanbase is made of people with physical and mental illness, he just speaks to us in a way no one else does. Makes people who are struggling so bad in life feel seen and understood. If you dive down the Ren rabbithole, you’ll qui kly find that there isn't any genre he fits into because he can literally do anything he wants. That's another reason he has such a huge fanbase. No matter the style of music you prefer, there is something for everyone, lol. If youre looking to see the diversity I'd def say check out the Tales trilogy, Chalk Outlines, Money Game pt 2, and Love Music pt 2 or 3.
