Vocal Coach 1st Reaction to PANTERA - “CEMETERY GATES”

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I react for the first time to PANTERA performing "Cemetery Gates”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This was my introduction to Phil Anselmo’s vocals, as well as the signature sound of Dimebag Darrell and Pantera as a metal band!

@@narcissus79 Sounds like you just don't like the sound that Morello creates, but you can't deny that it's a *new* and *unique* (to the guitar) sound, which is what original commenter was talking about. He's not "just a DJ holding a guitar" because he is creating a unique sound and unique notes, whereas a DJ is just scratching a record with notes that already exist. You're dismissing Morello's artistic talent just because the end result sometimes *sounds* like what a DJ might produce, and apparently that isn't your cup of tea.

I am so glad you didn't pause during the end...so many I've seen pause after Phil's first bit to comment, and I feel like they don't get the full effect of the call and response bit. I'm also 100% sure it didn't happen this way, but I like to muse that during writing, Phil hits his high note, Dime takes a measure thinking "I can do that too", and then mimics it on the guitar. The Phil ups it, Dime response, upped and responded 1 more time...then Dime just responds with a "sing this" ending.

Amazing! Possibly my favourite reaction to anything ever! The call and response at the end making your headphones fall off was a very special moment 🤣 This is especially fun for me as one of the absolute highlights of my youth was at Newport Centre in 1993 - high-fiving Phil Anselmo while running across the stage before stage diving at the height of Dime's solo in this very song, which was the last song of the night, if I remember rightly. Pantera were never considered 'up there' with the so-called 'Big 4' of Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer but, as much as I love all those bands too, Pantera were equally as hard, heavy, entertaining and talented and I absolutely loved them.

Yep we have all the "Dimebag effect" still in awe today listening to his music. Best thing about him never had one lesson, sell taught and I think thats why he was so good. He wasn't restricted by notes or keys he made the guitar an extension of himself. ❤

I hope you’ve since listened to the full version. It transforms what’s a great song into a real piece of art. The intro is a lot softer and there’s a good chunk of “guitar singing”. For TV release they had to cut it down which is why it starts so abruptly in the music video.

New subscriber here. As an engineer, love the breakdown of vocals/guitar. Not many bands out there that have a guitarist that can mimic a voice… Dimebag could and more. Great reaction and very interesting! Sure glad you used Cookie Monster instead of his cousin Biscuit Monster. 🤘

Pantera is known for one of greatest bands of all time for metal music. For me and for most people that play guitar, Dime (The guitarist) is the best of all time, and for some he isnt, but he 100% changed the way you play. He was so unique, technique, sound, vibrato, legato EVERYTHING man. He came to rock and rocked like no other. You should do more Pantera like Hollow , Floods, This love... There you can really feal the lyrics and GUITAR aswell. Great reaction btw keep on reacting 👏

Btw those jumps in octaves with the guitar is a pinch harmonic, which is pretty common in metal partially thanks to pantera. A pinch harmonic is not a jump on the frets but a strumming technique.

Thank you for the reaction. This song is a metal masterpiece. Everything about it is iconic. That riff, Dime's solo. How the mellow vocals capture the grief and sorrow and the heavy vocals capture the anger and rage you feel. The matching triples at the end and Dime finishing it off. Amazing song.

Dimebag was a absolute legend! He was one of the most unique guitar players to ever do it and one of the most influential guitar players of all time. My biggest inspiration growing up and still to this day, I just seen pantera the other night and the tributes to both dime and vinnie paul were just special, it was a incredible time. Loved this reaction! I've listened to this song so many times and i still get goosebumps every time. Rip dime 🖤🤘

Pantera was my first true love in metal. Not taking anything from dimebag as he was awesome but Vinnie Paul's(Dimebag's brother) drumming is the thing that I love the most. Awesome reaction, you are my favorite! Next pantera's to listen should be "A New Level".

I love your videos, and you really know your craft Fairy Godmother. I saw Pantera live in 2001 as an 18 year old. With this song there is a beautiful intro that isn't on the music video unfortunately. If you get the time you should listen to the intro on the album version. The intro is out of this world, the guitar work is God tier guitaring. Dimebag Darrell is the most authentic guitarist/artist to ever live, IMO

The technique used to make the guitar jump octaves is a pinch harmonic (or artificial harmonic). Fret a note, then pick it while simultaneously lightly muting the string with the picking thumb. The note heard depends on where you mute the string, so you can play the same fretted note and get multiple tones by moving your picking hand. Basic technique, but applied in an amazing way.
