Vocal Analysis of NIRVANA ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ (reaction + Leadbelly comparison)

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I react for the first time to Nirvana performing "Where Did You Sleep Last Night” live at the MTV Unplugged. In this video, I analyse Kurt Cobain’s amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Part of that involved a comparison to the original version by Leadbelly. I had to complete the ‘grunge trilogy’ after having reacted to Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains!

Thank you SO much for comparing the Leadbelly version. You're the only reactor who I've seen so that. It really gives a sense of the song. That final scream, pause, and breath kills me every time. The pain, and the passion he poured into every song, and every performance was so clear on his face. This whole concert was a masterpiece, and it pissed MTV, and the execs off because they played almost none of their biggest hits, and did 3 covers of little known artists.

Oh gosh, joining the others who have commented with admiration and appreciation for catching that look on Kurt's face just before he delivers the last few words of the song. It's an absolutely haunting moment, especially in reflection. Kurt apparently wanted lilies and black draping fabric for the set, saying he wanted it "like a funeral." To me the look in his eyes is that of a man who has attended his own funeral and is realizing that the ceremony is coming to a close -- or like someone seeing his own ghost. RIP Kurt.

I've said this a thousand times, and no one can ever change my mind. Kurt saw something. 100%. He saw something, as he took that breath, like some sort of "out of body" experience. Right before he belted out the last few words. That's why he's got that look on his face. (I believe) he saw his death, and saw who was going to do it, or at the very least, saw how brutal it was. Unfortunately, all we can do is speculate about what really happened, and have our own individual theories.

In the end, someone went to a local music store and bought brushes, sizzle sticks etc. which Dave hadn't played with but a bunch of the set wasn't played with regular sticks. Dave Grohl has said that they were expecting a bad show because they were all having trouble stripping down to the gentle acoustics with the little rehersal they did. There's tons of wild stories about these unplugged shows, but they all became iconicn There's some

@@captgeech Go watch Montage of Heck, it's a masterpiece. Kurt was an extremely sensitive person and wanted everybody to love him and his music especially. When he thought someone didn't love him it spiraled him into sadness and depression. Every time he acted like he didn't care and said "F You" it was a deflection of how he really felt because deep down he did care what people thought of him too much. He just wanted somebody to love him his entire life and I don't think he ever truly felt intense true love. So that look at the end, in my eyes, is that he had hoped that everybody had loved the song as much as he did because it really was a gamble to play this type of song in this setting. The applause seemed to have ease him very quickly once he saw the reaction.

"We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark-that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." This quote from Hunter S Thompson always reminds me of the "fucking electrifying" face Cobain makes, while taking a heavy breath and flashing his soulless blue eyes - lifeless eyes that few understand - before going in for his last breath and last note. Mostly because this was filmed months before his suicide, and his eyes seem to convey that he knows where he's headed.

The MTV unplugged concerts are the best thing to come from MTV. Its a gift to the world. And considering what MTV became, and how it just a waste of time now. Its good to remember they used to give the world things like this. These bands, and legends. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and so on. They where given this stage, where some of the most amazing band live recordings ever where made. All because of MTV, and what they used to be. They used to be the place where young people could connect with new people. Back when the internet was new, you still bought cd's and listened to music on tv channels. Also, this song is pretty cool. Because its actually not a Nirvana song, or anyone's song really. Its a old folk song. dating back to at least the 1800's. And then different people started recording it in the 1900's. Including Leadbelly. But it also put if not a different meaning, then at least a different context on the song. The lyrics where from a very different time. The song being about a man, who finds out his wife had been cheating on him, so he walks out into the cold night, and is found dead in the pines. About why or how he died, is up to how and what you take from the song as a listener. This was also the last song of the show, as he said. But MTV wanted Nirvana to go out and give one final number. But they where not sure, because they though they sucked, and it was awful. And that the people hated it, because people where so silent. Later, as the recording became legendary and all that, its clear people where not unhappy. They where just sucked in. And living in the moment with the music, no mobile phones recording or anything. Just them, the band and the music.

Nirvana didn't really play any of their hits in their MTV Performance. Also, 6 of the 14 songs they performed were covers from other artists including this one which was originally done by Lead Belly. They even brought out 1 of those artist to perform 3 of their songs. They also filmed the entire performance in a single take and left all their mistakes in. Kurt reportedly was going through withdrawals from heroin and was vomiting bile and blood during rehearsals. That sigh of relief that it's almost over and the way he looks at the camera still brings a tear to my eye no matter how many times I have watched this.

Word was, confirmed by Michael Stipe of R.E.M., who was talking to Cobain prior to Kurt's death, that Cobain wanted to take Nirvana in a more acoustic direction with their next album, and he was talking to Stipe about how R.E.M. had changed their sound in a similar fashion years prior. Unfortunately, all we are left with are these recordings that hint at what might have been.

@@JeremyOuelletteNH Bands will sometimes change their sound, some more radically than others. Many fans just go along for the ride, some fans rage quit, and some people who perhaps wouldn't have considered listening to band previously give them a shot. Go back and listen to the Bee Gees in 1969. Now listen to the stuff they were doing in 1977. Metallica being another example. Some would say that the Beatles are yet another one. I think Lolli could do a whole series of episodes on bands that changed their sound and what that meant vocally.

@@hhale Ya I'm all for it! I would give my left nut to hear Nirvana's next album whether it was acoustic, metal, guitar, or ukulele! What I was trying to communicate was, now that I know Kurt was talking to Stipe for ideas about transitioning to acoustic, it just makes that unrealized album more real, and more sad... Now I got a case of the Existential Regrets, and Yearnings for that which Almost Was but can Never Be 😢 Honestly though, I'd rather know than not, so thank you for sharing!

I remember my friend Jessica started crying!! Had I known what the future would hold for so many of the Grunge signers, I would've taken more time to enjoy the 90s!! It was a different time. Every club in every city had live music and you could find a new band every night in every city!! Idc what anyone says tbe 90s was the best time for music!! Rap was also at its pinnacle!! RIP

Nirvana Unplugged was what turned a lot of people's opinion on the band, and Cobain individually. Before, many people thought "Grunge" was a terrible successor of hard rock, that Nirvana was putting on something of an act. Then they did unplugged and it really helped humanize them. Nirvana Unplugged is arguably their best album.

Wow!! I super enjoyed this video! You did such a great job speaking about the type of sounds Kurt was making and explaining how he made the sounds were made. So darn great! I'm a pretty big listener of his music, since I grew up where I did - across the water from Seattle. :) So I'm always happy to experience one of these covers with you. :) Super enjoyed how you also took a look at the original song as well. Leadbelly was definitely of it's time. Really liked that very nice message at the end! It was a very nice way to close this great video. :) Be well! :D

The "trinity" of grunge bands for me is Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. However, some people would say Alice in Chains and Soundgarden are more "metal." Others would debate whether grunge exists at all. It was more a label made up by the media. But then again, isn't that true of all genre labels? Also, I think Stone Temple Pilots gets a bit overlooked and underappreciated in the discussion. They were thought of as "derivative," but that had more to do with timing and the sound of a few of their singles. In reality, they're quite a lot different from their Seattle counterparts. They incorporate elements of glam rock and bossanova and other styles you don't typically hear in grunge. They might be worth checking out on this channel. I'd recommend the Unplugged version of "Big Empty" or the video version of "Interstate Love Song."
