"He himself, lost his home once" The wise man could not be more correct and that is something that Kurt could not get over and was deeply wounded by. That rejection he felt in all the years of his youth, was more than responsible for his heartache.

His music, his words (which if you had actually heard any of his music it would help) helped us feel better about ourselves and made us more comfortable feeling awkward and introspective and that it was ok to be different. You should listen to more of his music not just this song which wasn't even his song 🤣 that's a song by Huddie Ledbetter from the late 1800's early 1900's . But thank you for the comment

@@corbinbates2708 I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news on the radio. I was 14 and had been really getting into alternative music for a couple of years at that point. The music at that time was like the perfect soundtrack for what most of us were experiencing; the inner world of someone trying to find their place in the outer world where you didn't feel like you really fit in because you were unique, but not the right kind of normal unique. I'm so grateful that we grew up when we did and had this music to listen to while we worked through our teenage angst and the irony and cognitive dissonance of the world we live in. This was, and still is, my favorite CD/album. He cites a lot of musicians as inspiration or collaborators throughout the performance and I've checked a lot of them out over the years. It really expanded my musical taste. I can't not point out the irony that as kids it felt like most adults didn't get us and now, as adults, it feels like a lot of the kids don't get us either. I guess that's the fate of Gen-X, but we'll just shrug it off like everything else and keep being ourselves.

I'm from punjab and it was quite surprising for me but Pakistan was a part of punjab back in the day so I can see how they're familiar with the literature

They could feel the pain not only in the lyrics, but in the whole performance. Someone said that in the moment Kurt catched his breath, looked in front of him and sang the last few words he was giving up on life, I believe this is true. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this even after so many years. YES to them reacting to more Nirvana. Thank you for the great work.

We shouldn't conflate a musical performance with the origins of a song. "Under the Pines" has an unknown author and was structured in the tradition of an old Elizabethan ballad(no offense to the Celts, who the Elizabethans borrowed from - how far back should we go?). Recording wasn't invented until the 20s, and the first "Under the Pines" recording bore little resemblance to its original dark content. Nirvana's performance (assuming this is what you mean when you refer to "this") is not from the Appalachian part of us. Appalachia has no more claim to it than the Delta blues laying claim to a country song. Country music was heavily influenced by southern blues, especially after the Depression, but we don't listen to a Hank Williams song and say "This is Appalachian music" or "This is the blues part of us." We don't hear a Rolling Stones or Eric Clapton interpretation of a blues song (a bunch of British guys) and say "this is from the blues part of us. It's southern Delta music." It's also like listening to a BB King blues song and saying "This is the gospel part of us. It's church music." Nirvana's performance is a rock and roll interpretation of Lead Belly's recording of this old folk song....Old blues.

I had never listened to this version of the song and wow , at 7:54 when he opens his eyes before letting out that scream....that shook me to my core. Wonderful video , fantastic wisdom as always.

If you liked this id always heavily recommend the whole Unplugged set if you havent watched it in one sitting, it manages to be so heartwrenchingly raw despite being in a somewhat polished environment. Kurts vocals truly do shine throughout the whole session, and ontop of that its one of the few that has decent recordings of some of Kurts favourite songs to cover (this one being one of them). Music truly is universal and its performances like this that prove that

As someone who does these kind of vocals, I can reassure everyone that it's the low bassy notes that can make you fart, not the high screams.

6:11 Love the comment on Pat Smear, lol. "He is having the most fun, swinging in his chair." Honestly the reason the brought him into Nirvana. To try and make it fun for them again. Everyone loved Pat.

small mistake, "in the pines" refers to a forest of نښتر where it is cold and the trees block the sun. a pineapple plant is a different species that exists in warm tropical climate.

@Dislike Button sorry just wanted to add more here. did yall know that before 1492 and the Columbus exchange, that a "Pineapple" would be referring to a "Pinecone"? , the seed-bearing fruit from a Pine Tree. later after the Tropical fruit was introduced into English speaking world, they noted the similarities and called it a "Pineapple" as well.... "Apple" was actually a generic word for "Fruit" at the time.

Forgot to say, I thought Elizabeth’s breakdown of this song/performance was so insightful! She’s a great resource. There’s another guy I enjoy watching for a similar kind of insight, although he talks more about the music itself than the quality of the singing. His channel is Key of Geebz. He’s a music composer and has a lot of interesting thoughts about what goes into the music itself. If he and Elizabeth both cover a song, that’s the ultimate in deep diving! 😊

A dim bulb would be someone that ignores circumstantial evidence, that would suggest it would have been unlikely for him to have taken his own life, in the manner described, at the conclusion of Seattle PDs investigation. I make no assertions to any theory, just that there is enough to doubt the official report. Not too different from suspicious circumstances surrounding Jimi Hendrix in 1971. A dim bulb is someone that believes governing bodies are benevolent entities, that serve to protect, and that their motives are not to ever be questioned. A dim bulb is someone that thinks bad people, with bad intentions, wouldn't seek positions of power, or couldn't attain that power. A dim bulb is someone who dismisses the idea that, the one person that would most want you to disappear, could be sleeping right beside you.

I myself am a leftie (left handed) and the way he feels about things or respectively, felt, I also feel. Like big corporations and hoe overwhelming life can be, even to the point of drug addiction. I've been down that ugly road myself. Been with a narcissist too, so I understand the depths of his pain and sorrow. I understand why he wanted out of this life, despite the pain it brought all of us, he had a little girl. I have children too. Sad we can have children and still feel this way...but these men could feel his pain without understanding the language. That's something. They need to here some original Kurt written songs.

The interpretation of the song that I’ve always took was this. The song is being sung by the dead husband. He caught her cheating and she ran away and he chased her across the train yard. He got caught up in a moving train and died. She ran off to the woods because she was going to be punished not only for cheating but also for killing her husband. The story takes place in the 1800’s in the south so the main characters are black and she is extra concerned because of that. At the end of the song she passes away due to being out in the cold.

Pretty good interpretation. My take is this: The song is being sung by the ghost of a man who's been killed in a horrific and violent accident...he crossed a road and was hit by a car. He doesn't know that he's dead and only knows that he's been up in the branches of some pine trees near the location of the accident, where it's dark, windy and cold. He goes home to visit his girl, either his girlfriend or wife. Because he died, he didn't come home the night before and so he doesn't know what she was doing the night of his accident. Where was she? Was she with him or someone else? He can't remember, really...he's disoriented. Being a ghost and not knowing that he's dead, he's trying to talk to her, but she's not answering him. And he doesn't like the pines, but he's compelled to haunt them and he senses she can't join him and keep him warm. And perhaps when he says, "Don't lie to me" he's not really accusing her of cheating, but rather he's accusing her of not telling him what happpened...that she was home alone the whole time-she's wasn't with him the in the pines--and that he's dead. So, to me it's a chilling song about the confusion of a spirit caught between the world and the afterlife.

Great interpretation! The song, "In the Pines" was actually about a woman that killed her husband and is now being questioned by the law. It is an actual interrogation occurring and is sung from the perspective of the investigating official. This blew my mind when I first learned of the song's origins because I also viewed it from the husband's perspective. The lyric that describes the husband and how he was partially found is the key to this perspective, and then the chorus is the interrogation. Cheers

​@jay dubya For sure! I forgot to add that the title, "In the Pines..." was her response to the authorities. A beautifully haunting murder ballad of the 1800's brought into the 90's flawlessly by Kurt and Nirvana.

It continues to impress me the level of understanding they all have expressed generally just from tone and non-verbal communication. Such wisdom appears to get rarer by the day.

Why do I love these reactions so much? Is it because it reaffirms our basic humanity... I don’t know these guys, but love this song - and am somehow connected to them through it. Thank you for this channel ❤

I've heard the song and this version 100 times but this reaction video gave me goosebumps all over again. Thank you. 💚

Mr. Abdul Asiz is always over the target with his observations. They would flip out knowing what had happened to him is very similar to what happened to the man in the song. The husband is actually the one who's telling the tale and his spirit questions his wife before he goes on when he says, "I'm going where the cold wind blows." He feels no warmth anymore because he is deceased. A driving wheel is something roughnecks and oil drillers used to use in the remote fields/forests to get the heavy work done to move around heavy objects in the job. They would throw a rope over that wheel that's output from an engine slowly increase pressure to have the wheel begin to do the work. Sometimes, men would often become hung up in the rope when the wheel grabs it too tightly and it'll tear an arm off, that if they were lucky. My Grandpa was a roughneck in the late 1940's to 1950's, he tried to save a man who got caught by that rope they called, "the cattail" and it tore his thumb off. I hope that helps you understand it a little better. Amazing video though! While they know nothing of Cobain, they pick up on what he was trying to tell people about his own wife by choosing this song.

Pineapples are pinecones, right? In my language they are called 'Dennenappels'. Which literally translates to Pineapples. But they're not Pineapples(which we call 'Ananas'). Language and its application is so interesting.

​@roddo1955 In American English a "pineapple" is a type of fruit --> 🍍 A "pine cone" is something different. It is a similar shape to the body of the pineapple fruit, but it is dark colored, smaller, and holds seeds. It is not a fruit or edible. They grow on pine trees here.

Yes, this was amazing , like seeing it again with new eyes, hearing with new ears! Raw is the perfect way to describe Kurt's singing. I think they should know that Kurt killed himself, he was such an intense person, listening to him is like taking a drug. It's so good, and then it over whelms you. I know both sides of the story, I've been the cheater, and the cheated in relationships. His passion, just wow. I love this channel and I hope that maybe Kurt can see or hear this somehow, I think he's out there, you cannot destroy that kind of energy. This was on MTV?? Wow, times have changed. There is no music out there like Nirvana today, when Kurt died it was like the song that goes " the day the music died".Thanks to KZread for the recommendation!! One of them mentioned something about Kurt sounding like he had lost his home before? Something in the Way was a song Kurt wrote about running away from home as a child and living under a bridge. Maybe that would be a good choice for next time, it's a very personal and sad song.

He didn't run away. He was told to leave. His teenage years were spent sleeping on the backs of friends porches or even in hospital waiting rooms, where he was convinced no one would bother him if he appeared to be waiting for a sick friend. Pretty sad that his whole family basically made him feel like he wasn't wanted and too difficult to handle.

It would be interesting for your contributors to see the entire 14 song concert as a whole piece. This was the final song performed. It is hard to describe the emotions one feels from seeing the whole thing. Just that one gets the sense that's one of the great concerts of history. Raw and spellbinding.

So intense and still so powerful after all these years. I always get goosebumps when I listen to this song.

I don't know other (older) versions of this song, but this version of Kurt's always tells the story of his darling being dead somewhere under the pine trees to me. The protagonist repeats his question her and she always says,'..in the pines where the sun don't ever shine. I shivered the whole night through'. He asked her where she would go? Her response is always 'where the cold wind blows'. I think he now becomes maniac and lives in a cycle.

I always love your videos and the beautiful people you share cultural things with. I've traveled the world and met many people in attempt to build understanding. I was a first gen punk rocker. My final days of going to shows and hanging on the scene were in Nirvana's infancy. My best friends band played with them in a shitty club and there were about 34 people there that night. I'm in my 60s now. If you'd told me that night that in the future I would be watching this interaction on a laptop computer and brushing away tears I might not have believed you. Thanks for bring these people into our lives. I love it so much.

I used to anonymously add that song to the digital jukebox at a pool hall I frequented (sometimes 2 or 3 plays in a row), and it was always hilarious to see the reactions of the tough bar-goers getting frustrated at almost 30 minutes of weird instrumentals peppered with a vocal here or there That was years ago though and obviously I realize now that it was kind of a tool move to pull and could be pretty annoying from another perspective, but at the time in my younger 20s I still found it pretty funny lol Thanks for unintentionally bringing back old memories and getting a chuckle out of me! Very interesting how music is a universal expression, which conveys feelings. Some interesting notes I jotted down: *about pat smear:* Oh, this guy have more fun! *about Kurt and song:* I see pain in your face, in your every body. His voice is soft, hard and heavy, at same time!

I'd suggest playing *"Come as You Are"* or better yet, *"Heart Shaped Box"* for reference to where he was mentally at during this time in his life. For earlier, prior to his darker days, *"sliver."* You may have to show them the videos and just turn the captions on for the song. That'll allow us to follow along with what they're hearing and bypass any potential claims on the videos. We won't need to hear it because we all know these songs, but we could easily play them ourselves... Should someone want to play it while watching it. It'll be far less trouble this way.

Just some insight into the singing. Mark Lanegan is credited with introducing Kurt to the Lead Belly songs. They had previously recorded this song together and Kurt wanted Mark to join during the MTV session. Mark didn't join sadly but in response to that, Kurt replied "I'll sing it how you did, brother" or something to that effect. Mark has a very deep voice, it's likely Kurt was using the technique without actually knowing what it's called or that it's even something they taught, in an effort to deepen his voice. That's the magic of people like Kurt Cobain and Mark Lanegan. They were both originals and completely self taught.

Be it hand gestures mirroring a song's rhythm or a slight body sway as a tempo changes, it's truly so cool to see that, no matter in what language, or with what instrument, the musicality in humans will always shine through.

I think what is so amazing about this unplugged concert is that the band attempted to practice the acoustic set the day before in New Jersey and couldn't get through half the songs (many of which were covers they hadn't played before). Kurt was unwell and the band, their management, and the production team felt like proceeding with the concert was going to be a colossal disaster. The rest is history. After the performance though, Kurt thought he had played poorly and it took a lot of reassurance to convince him otherwise.

Love this song and great to see other cultures appreciating it, brilliant stuff.

The older gentleman nearly brings me to tears with his analysis. After knowing the pain and troubles both chester and kurt went through and him to show concern over it after the first look at their faces is heartbreaking. We would still have these amazing artists had someone else saw into them as he did.

He isn’t chewing anything, the movement of his jaws (back and forth) was the way he kept ‘time’ . Dave Grohl talks about this in his book The Storyteller.

After hearing Chacha at the end asking for more Nirvana, I immediately looked for it, thank you for another delightful video.

This is my most favourite music review ever! I have roots in this direction too and there was a time I really struggled with Western behaviour in music because I had the feeling I need to be painful, screaming and dancing around in sexually manner too in order to belong too but learned I can just safely stay humble and simple and do music that is also appreciated, but too see this is like bridge for appreciation for me, because in my family, there were not so much, so its good to know people, especially older ones being confronted and react in such a wise, sweet, humble and empathic way!
