Vocal BREAKDOWN. Harry Styles, Watermelon Sugar. (How to Connect Speaking to Singing) NOT a REACTION

I've been doing quite a few "by request" videos lately, and I kept hearing from people about Harry Styles, and wanting me to analyze his voice. As I got into his stuff, one BIG thing stood out:
He's a FANTASTIC musical conversationalist! He doesn't sound like he's 'talking' when he's performing, but he's got a strong understanding of how to take his normal, expressive speech voice, and connect it to his singing. This is an area that MOST vocalists struggle with, honestly. We are either in "singing mode" or "talking mode". Great singers know that this isn't how it should be.
Let me show you, through a breakdown of Styles' performance of Watermelon Sugar, how to connect your speech voice to your singing and unlock all sorts of musical goodness!

as a rock musician, I personally find a lot of inspiration with Harry Styles' music, because he's just got such a command over a crowd with the sensibilities of the rockstars of the past. I'm glad you're doing new with this!

I like the fact you're going into different genres, Chris! As singers we can learn from everywhere. Personally I wish you would do Prince's Temptation, it contains at least 5 octaves, and there are all kinds of vocals there, from the Axl Rose-ish screams in the beginning to the really low vocals or high falsetto, but I understand the estate blocks everything related to them.

Hey Chris you are amazing and I like the fact you are exploring and breaking down multiple genres. Since you tackled pop music and Harry Styles in particular, I suggest a breakdown of John Legend (in my opinion an amazing vocalist) or Shawn Mendes (kind of a teen sensation but also what I believe to be an artist I can learn a bunch of things from)

Chris, you rock!!! I know it has been a while since I have said hi, but I have still been working on the mixed voice for Maroon five, Memories. This video is really helping expand that. I have really come a long ways in being able to sing more like this. That timing he is doing that you pointed out was a AH-AH moment!!! You have really taught me to go into different styles without being afraid and defeated :) Rock has been my main style, which I have felt very comfortable doing that live anytime. >:) You are so damn perceptive! People need to listen to you!!!!!

I had never heard Harry Styles outside of one direction, who I absolutely despised, prior to this video. I'm going to go watch that performance now. It almost had a BB King/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Chris Stapleton type of laid back, "You don't have to like me. You just need to shut up and listen. What I'm saying is more important than anything you've ever contemplated and you're gonna get it even though the lyrics are stupid and meaningless," type of presence. I don't know if I like it, but it was certainly not what I expected when I clicked on the video, which intrigued me.

Thanks for doing something more of pop scene! I believe if you continue analyzing such singers, your fanbase will grow even more! Stevie Wonder, Sting, Michael Jackson, Maroon 5, Adam Lambert, One Direction, etc.

You should watch him singing Girl Crush, I think it’s his best vocal performance. Cause I think when he sings sign of the times he strains a lot. But on girl crush it sounds like a healthy belty high note, I don’t know, I’m just starting to learn singing.
