How to Sing Like Trent Reznor (Unique Rasp, Whisper, Compression & Aggression) Not a Reaction
Free Voice Lessons: chrisliepe.com/free-your-voice/
My Website: chrisliepe.com
Lots of us associate distortion with aggressive loudness and screaming... And it's certainly fun and rewarding to get those aggressive juices going! Studying Trent Reznor's approach, especially his quieter singing, reveals a "pent up" sort of aggression that, when done right, really adds to the mood. Done wrong, that quiet raspy singing can make you cough, dry out your throat and burn out your voice just as fast as an unhealthy scream!
Let me show you how to take cues from Trent Reznor and use compression in a slightly different way. This approach will help you develop that airy rasp in your own singing! ...And don't worry, with what I'm going to show you, you'll be able to turn it on and off as you wish. You won't be stuck with it:)

Pretty Hate Machine was his first album and it's great if you love 80's synth. I was not a fan of 80's music, so it grew on me, which actually helped me get into 80's music too. lol Broken is also a classic IMO and is closer to Rock and Metal than Pretty Hate Machine. So much harder than PHM and even in some ways The Downward Spiral The Downward Spiral is often brought up as his greatest piece of work, and I love it, it's what really hooked me into NIN. Classic from front to back, very industrial metal sounding. The Fragile is my favorite album from NIN. It's like a mix of TDS and Broken to me with an entirely new feeling and style to it. It's not as heavy as Broken or TDS, but it has it's moments.

trent reznor has a great voice. he’s awesome live as well. totally underrated.
Always loved when he sings with “stage whisper”!
Always been a huge NiN fan but never thought of all those subtle hints Trent was injecting in his singing! It's also worth pointing out some of the recording techniques he used on his vocals (alot of hipass filters or rasp vocals harmonizing clean). Great breakdown Chris!
Interesting to hear his style of singing with a different tone. His voice is so particular you don't realize how influential he was on alternative metal acts (Linkin Park and those B tier industrial bands come to mind).

Damnnnn you are really good at these “How to sing like..” videos. Someone like you with a great discerning ear for those subtleties is really helpful for developing in turn one’s own ear. I guess thats the most important part of these videos more so than just getting different styles down. To have the ability to pick up on details is what makes one a good listener which to me seems to have the most direct influence on being a good musician. You should totally do such videos for other kinds of singing- folk, jazz or even Eastern musical traditions. Yes, you will be coming at it from your own sensibilities but that in turn will add alot, particularly to rock musicians who are reaching out to other forms. Looking at female vocalists would also be quite interesting, such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Joan Baez, etc. Regardless, you are doing some of the best work for vocals on KZread 🤘🤘🤘

What in the.... I just realised that you have covered my two favourite artists, Reznor and Manson 3 days apart, just when I am starting to do vocals for a song I’m working on. Chris, you’ve made this my favourite week of this year. Thanks man!

It is all about Trent Reznor, Johnathan Davis--the singer from Korn, and Marilyn Manson, and Roger Waters....
I used to have Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine tape on heavy rotation in my car about 30 years ago I can't believe it's been that long
Trent Reznor has to be my biggest musical inspiration let alone just vocal. Just right under some of Chester Bennington's techniques.
Your ability to hear these things, then to translate them is like a guided tour of where and how these sounds are made. One of my goals for November is to learn at least the rasp and hopefully a bit more of what you demonstrate here. Every now and then I get one right, but when I try to introspect it vanishes, then I sound like a sick baby or a creepy old woman or I cough. Thanks so much for this master class Chris :)
How does he sing so close to the mic with all that air without popping sounds? 😭

The poppings are there, but, the sounds of all of the instruments are blocking them from being heard.... If you can find a vocal-only track, you will hear the poppings.... You need loud speakers to hear them clearly, not so much on headphones..... Plus, you need to mess with the equalizer.... If you do not have one, it is harder to hear said poppings but not impossible, even on all of the CD albums versions if you cannot find a vocal-only track....
I remember reading your introduction to your vocal course "there's no magic pill" I disagree. You ARE a magic pill. I've barely started experimenting with my voice and already discovered so much. Thank you so much!

Thank you!! I'm so glad you're experiencing victories ALREADY!!
It sounds as though Trent is essentially adding a natural compression to his vocals, And that's where his vocal singing ceiling caps. Until he breaks through it and adds that angry big cat like rasp. When I hear Chris singing Trent's part. I can hear a bit of Layne Staley influence in Trent's performance. I've read a ton of interviews with long time NIN engineer Sean Beavan, and he said that a majority of Trent's vocal and guitar performances stemmed the varying distortion and effects pedals. The effects would pull a certain performance out of Trent during the making of The Downward Spiral. And it's as though after Trent heard the final draft, that he himself then sand along and rehearsed to and found a way to emulate those same deliveries with his own natural voice. I don't doubt that Trent multi-tracked his vocals during the intro vocals of this song during the recording process. A low voice for bass and a whisper for the higher end. And the end result of Trent figuring out how to combine the two for Live performances.
It's trent's birthday today, going to see NIN live in a month can't wait! It's been 22 years
A fair few shadow vowels are happening in Trent's vocals here, you can hear the the shadow vowel trailing off the end of some lines, it is excellent.
Chris! Please make a part 2 about NIN! Some more commentary with studio tracks would be great!
This is great! Oh men, this is the first channel I subscribed from seeing an ad. Thank you! You are amazing! Also no cuts on your video says that you know what you are doing 😎💪🏻

Imagine Trent’s voice as the machines he uses to make music and express his emotions. They’re very purposeful and deliberate much like a machine. He is trying to be cold and forceful representing a human becoming a machine. The coldness he feels from experiences in his life (I.e. drugs, the death of friends, the backstabs…) he conveys by becoming the cold machine in his vocal work. There is just enough humanity left to write music. When I listen to NIN that’s how I feel. And when I attempt to his sound, that’s what I think about.
Probably the best vocal teacher I've come across for my voice. Thanks man for all of these free lessons.. Really has made a difference.
I've been looking for a Trent Reznor voice tutorial. Thank you, Chris!
This is so good chris. Would love to hear you do David Gilmour. He's such an underrated vocalist and can sing lite and high or heavy and raspy. Also, Bjork would be a really good one.
Wow...didn't know Professor Snape was so vocally talented! XD ...love NIN, and your vids, Chris!

4 weeks ago??? You’re here just in time for my covers of his songs ahah! Thank you so much, now time to learn
This is brilliant. Chris, I thank you so much for doing this analyze of Trent Reznor. He has been one of my favorite singers, multi-instrumentalists, sound designers and the list goes on... I am currently working on a song that is inspired by NIN. I wrote the song during the 90s and never had the technology to do an Industrial song. So the song never got performed and or recorded. Now I have the technology to go back and give a go at recording it. I haven't sung or performed music in years and I am at the point of tracking vocals.. and I just can't get a decent vocal recording. I am tensed and I am hurting my throat while trying to record.. I am afraid of my own voice and it shows in the quality of what I am tracking. And when I listen back to the recording, I am pitchy... it sounds awful ..lol. So I thank you for doing this detailed look into one of my music inspirations, Trent Reznor. This helped me realize a lot of what vocal mechanics are going on behind Trent's singing approach. I may not be able to get this vocal right now, but this video will help me look at my technique and apply what you pointed out in this video. You rock, Chris. I have been going through your free courses and your KZread videos to get started. Your channel is my go-to for vocal instruction.
Yay! I requested this! Can’t wait to play around with these techniques myself
This is just what I was looking for! Excellent video Chris! I hit suscribe instantly.

Im preparing to cover this song. Happy to come across your video
Chris! Love your stuff! Could you do a video on how to sing like Clutch? I’d love to see how you break down Neil Fallon’s voice, old stuff and new. The man has so much power!
Honestly I think he just does what is natural to him. Like he developed it organically. Honed in on what he has to work with and what he thought sounded good as he made his music. Though in a very old interview he did say he did need to figure out what to do with his voice in pretty hate machine.
Love Trent Reznor, thanks for posting this one.
Sound artist goes to a New level: you paint it explicitly to us.🤗🤗🤗
Becoming is one of my favorite songs from him. I didn't like his performance on Becoming still version. But i did like your break down : )
thank you for this great video!
My ear isn't yet well trained enough to hear all the subtleties in his singing, so i really appreciate all the breakdown you do. Really helps with understanding all the intricacies in his singing. Hope you make one on Kellin Quinn soon xD
Thanks again Chris!
Pretty sure he's just channelling satan, he's the only one who can do it this good, although his prodigy manson was good at it too. Trents voice is probably his greatest gift
I used to think TR couldn't actually sing because he yelled a lot. Then I tried to sing "The Great Below"... The man can actually sing.
Very helpful! Thanks a lot!
Great video as always, Chris. Would be great if you could also check out Brent Smith from Shinedown or Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons!
Great video brother! Thank you for sharing his techniques. I’m definitely going to incorporate some of this style into my own singing. Hey How about a little David Lee Roth?
I absolutely love these. Watching your videos has help me tune in my own voice and now I don't feel so awkward doing warm ups or even just singing along to my favorite bands. My favorite song from the downward spiral.
Is there any technique how Jim Morrison sings? I mean mostly the yels and screams, they are so effortless and powerful.
I also noticed how he changes the position of his mouth in relation to the microphone as sings with more volume and power. Just recently started recording myself and oh man, it’s a whole new world. Cant really record mixed volume/power lines through a compressor. Gotta figure out not just singing, but also level management when doing that “stage whisper” going into gritty stuff lines. By the way, got Chris Liepe’s course on singing what soon to be last year. Went through it on and off because of getting sick too much. Very nice stuff. If you’re a person who’s less technical and more of a imagination-feeling driven person, I think you will find his courses to be a very nice fit. He really does a good job at teaching you how things should feel, and how they shouldn’t.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU DID IT......YESSSSSSSS
Been listening to alot of matt maeson these days, those bright vocals are goals
Hell yea I've been trying to add some of his techniques to my singing for a long time but never was really able to figure out what he was doing

My favorite memory with NIN was when I was shitfaced at a karaoke bar, a guy was doing Head Like A Hole and I was singing along in the crowd. He came down with the mic over to my table and we belted that chorus out like it was our last day on earth. My throat was so raw the next day because I was using a lot of grit while also drunk and probably dehydrated. No regrets tho, good times.
I just have to say you are a amazing singer and I love the videos and I would like to see you do a video on John Lennon because he was a unique singer that doesn’t get much recognition any more
Great as usual! How to use a dynamic mic in a live performance?
Really inspiring
I’m only just finding this. I was interested to see what one would say about his singing style. I’ve always just found him completely and honestly connected to what he’s singing. T Rez is a master manipulator of sound and his voice is simply another instrument he’s made the most of in much the same way he has anything else he’s played.

Great instructional, though the song is so great I find myself jamming with it more than I’m paying attention to the vocals. Perils of a Nails fan!
Thanks for sharing this intense explanation and demonstration. Nice. Btw, I have noticed that in the demonstrations you don't sing in general directly into the mic, but with an angle? Can this affect to the volume of your voice that gets the mic? Also, the standing mic is different from the ones you have usually close to your sit. Any important difference?
Hey chris, I love the videos, do you think you could look at Damon Albarn from the Gorillaz. I love the effects he uses on his voices in older and newer albums but have no idea on how to get that sound.
