Your comments about being grateful about the mundane everyday events remind me of my dad. In 2020 he was diagnosed with a rare disease and passed away four weeks later. The day before he died we had a family lunch, just an ordinary event that happens once a week and afterwards he spoke about how magic the day had been. All of his favourite people together in one place. I think about this often and how to cherish the everyday. Thanks for bringing this to mind again.

The concept of romanticizing your life is so interesting to me because I see vlogging as the epitome of romanticizing the every day. Setting up the camera to show you walking in an aisle, grabbing things, layering music.. to me, I perceive that as you romanticizing your life. I would say you do a really good job at that so it’s curious you don’t see it that way. Would love to hear other opinions on this!

I agree! But it's often done as work that is meant to be viewed by others 😊 Even when you like something, it can be nerve wrecking to edit repeatedly 😅 Clearly, we enjoy it. Hope Michel is also enjoying and savoring it for herself, too ❤️

I mean I would guess Michel doesn't spend a lot of time watching her own videos, so it may seem romanticized to us, but filming constantly doesn't feel romantic in the moment :)

I think that creators and influencers feel a lot of pressure to make their life appear interesting, which is not the same as romanticizing one's life, and can feel like a burden more than a release. I think that any time you do something that is performative, even if that is just posting to your social media, it changes how you view the experience. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think that romanticizing one's life is more about finding joy in the little things and reminding people that they are the main characters in their own stories. Instead of waiting for the plot to unfold, they can create the storyline.

Michel, you’re saying you’re not good at romanticizing your life, but I think that’s because you do it soooo unconsciously that you don’t even realize you are romanticizing it😄😄🧡🧡 You’re literally creating the cutest most aesthetic little montage from a simple grocery shopping video, you’re taking little sweet moments from your life and turn them into romantic music videos😍😍😍I don’t even know what else romanticizing could be… You’re so amazing and you don’t even realize it sometimes🤗🧡

I LOVE that house for you!! How wonderful that you could immediately see how you’d make it your own. Laundry in the closet sounds so convenient. I wonder if you could adjust the footprint of the bathroom to make it like a master bath since it’s the only one. Or somehow carve out a second bathroom from the laundry room closet? That would definitely elevate the value. Oh I am so excited for you. The light in the house is just phenomenal. What if that house has incredible bones and not as much reno cost as you might think? There’s unknowns even when you renovate newer homes too. Maybe I’m being a Pollyanna here (hopelessly optimistic) but I’m excited for you.

Real estate is always a good investment! As long as you get a good inspection, don’t worry about the improvements. It’s a journey, not a sprint! You will do the things you want as you go along. I’ve been in my 2 bedroom home for over ten years now and have made so many improvements and redos in that time. I’ve never been sorry for one minute and I have a lovely home that absolutely reflects my person. Go for it! Many blessings.

I find that noticing the sky helps me romanticize my life. It's always changing and it has so much beauty. I'm a prairie girl too (except I'm about 2500 km north of you :P) but the sky is so vast and present in the prairies. I also love how it changes with the seasons. Like this morning, I woke up to a beautiful pink sunrise that was casting indigo shadows across the snow. And the tips of the trees were illuminated in a beautiful golden peach. Anyway, that is my tip for romanticizing life... just being aware of the daily and seasonal changes in the nature that surrounds you :)

I love the laundry in the closet idea!! What a dream. When you mentioned the Diners & Drive Ins -type trying of gluten-free bakeries it made me wonder if you/your team could pull the clips from your travels so far where you've eaten and put them into shorts here on KZread - actually any recipes you've cooked at home, too. You are so good at finding delicious things to eat without gluten or dairy and it would be great to have an easy way to access the things you make at home & things you order while you're out. I've done gluten and dairy free in the past and really should try again (autoimmune issues) but coming up with ideas is so intimidating.

This year has been really difficult for me, especially because I moved to a new country all alone. After months of feeling really depressed or just discouraged, my mindset started to shift slowly. I realize now that I romanticized the small things like watching the sun come up in the morning. I started to appreciate the smallest things and it’s made me a happier and better person overall ❤ hope you experience something similar when romanticizing your own life :)

Something I love to do and find helps me be more grateful and appreciative of the little things is to voice my appreciation out loud. I do it a lot when I am out and about and see something beautiful, I will say ‘isn’t that beautiful’ ‘how gorgeous’ etc or when I have had a nice experience or day I will say out loud ‘that was so fun’ ‘what a lovely day’ etc. I guess you probably do that automatically when you’re vlogging Michel, but maybe something to try in everyday life if you don’t already do it!

Hi Michel, I just want to say that I love your vlogs and think you are such a wonderful person! I like how you talk about finding happiness in the simple things and wanted to share my experience with that. Over the past several years, I've had 2 family member pass away from cancer. It's interesting because it's really made me appreciate all the small things in life (whereas maybe I wouldn't have before). When my family members were sick, their sickness was all I could think about...so even just going grocery shopping was stressful (because I was constantly worried about them). Now when I look back (to before they got sick), I realize how lucky I was to go grocery shopping when everyone was healthy/alive. And I wish I could go back and appreciate having coffee with them/appreciate the time with them even more. Anyway I hope I'm making sense...but the small things really are the big thing in the end.

That house is so cute! We took a chance on a fixer upper and we are living slowly making it into the sweetest little house. While some of the main house needs updates immediately, things like landscaping can slowly be done which helps with upfront cost. In my experience the fixer upper life was the best decision.

I've never heard of "romanticizing" as a thing that people are doing, but as soon as you described it, I realized it's something I started doing recently in a very specific way. I was watching videos like yours and specifically some cooking videos from Turkuazkitchen that seemed so idyllic, and I realized it was the music that was playing in the background. I am a very musical person and so hearing that in the background really makes the everyday stuff you both are doing seem so "romantic" I suppose. At first I just sort of told myself that that's not real life, that the music is added over the video later in editing. But then I was like, why not actually create a soundtrack to my life. I bake bread on a regular basis, and so I started turning on instrumental music while I'm baking, and it's amazing the change in atmosphere and attitude that created. I started trying to remember to turn music on more often while doing other things as well for whatever mood I want to set. I homeschool my four kids, so I don't want to add a lot of extra "noise," but I've really enjoyed creating my own real-life soundtrack whenever possible.

As someone who recently bought a house, you will know when it’s the right decision to put an offer in. It’s a gut feeling. With the first few homes we looked at, we weren’t sure whether or not we wanted to put in an offer, and we put in offers on other homes that felt super emotional. We didn’t get them and were devastated in the moment. The house we ended up getting is a charming, 1925 house that does need a lot of updating and renovation as well. It wasn’t super emotional, and I think that really helped us make the right decision. We know it needs work and it’s not perfect right now, but it’s ours and we can make it a reflection of us. It all makes sense now, so trust the process and remember that renovations are a marathon, not a race. Unless you have a lot of money upfront to do renovations- but we aren’t in that position and just plan to do it over time 😊 Thinking of you and your house buying journey!!

  • @pajamamama5965

Fun vlog! It's a joy to see you happy. You have a great imagination being able to picture how you would want to renovate that house. I remember the excitement going into our renovation of an older home. I'll give you my two cents. From my own experience it was extraordinarily stressful season of My Life. Everything cost so much more than we were told, my husband and I ended up having to do some of the work ourselves just to not lose our shirts. Of course we learned a lot in the process, but if I could redo it I wouldn't. We ended up having to sell it at a loss eventually which was a heartbreak. Hopefully that wouldn't happen for you but I'm mainly thinking about your health issues and needing to keep stress to a minimum. I would really like to see you get a house that's pretty much move in ready and in your dream location. Its worth waiting for.

Random (tactical) idea for the laundry/master closet idea: keep the door into the dining there for an extra escape route in the event you’d possibly need one AND it could be easy to just have another route to the kitchen 💁🏻‍♀️ My hubs and I had our builders make a door from our own master closet into the laundry that was off our mud room for the above purposes🙌🏼

I relate to what you said when you mentioned in your car chat that you are about to go into the grocery store and you’re going to challenge yourself to see the good in the little things. I am a single working woman and I work Monday thru Friday 8-5 with a 45 minute commute each way to and from work so if I hit the grocery store after work it’s crazy busy and the same on the weekends. One day I had taken a half day off work for a doctor appt and when I was done (around 3pm), I went to the grocery store and it felt SO amazing to spend time to leisurely walk the aisles and get what I needed and read labels and not feel like I was stressed because it was so busy and I just wanted to get in and gtf outta there LOL 😂

I recently bought a home and there some things I had done before I moved in. But don’t overwhelm yourself think it all has to be done up front. Things can be done over time for sure. That’s my plan. Also, I grew up in two houses my parents renovated. It wasn’t glamorous or romantic lol. But you can live in a house while work is being done for sure . As long as you have the basics. Good luck! 😊

I love that house and the “romanticizing” I’ve been doing for you…the possibilities are endless! I could totally see you doing everything you were talking about and more especially with picking out all the flooring, counters, paint, etc…will it be modern? Traditional? Whatever you would do would be amazingly beautiful like you have done to all your past homes! Sending out all my positive vibes and prayers to you girlfriend!!!xoxoxo

I reaaaally like that house and I feel like you getting to do some remodel is fitting for you since you love thrifting. We live in an older home that’s been remodeled by previous owner and its so cozy and reassuring knowing the house has good “bones.” Excited to see your future endeavors!

I love the concept of romanticizing your own life and in particular the “little things”. Gratitude really is powerful. It would be so awesome if you bought that house (or a different one). I would LOVE to follow a home renovation project with you!!

It’s a great home! All the things you want to do, especially the kitchen and bath changes, would be costly, but I do it all the time in remodels & renovations! Moving the sink & toilet in the bath means moving the plumbing. For the toilet it’s a bit more difficult especially if the home is cement slab, which I think it is from a few glances in your video & pics. Your ideas to do now are great and at some point you have enough lot space to add an entire master suit to create a 3/2. If the area is coming up, it could be a really great investment! As prices go up in the neighborhood over the next 5-15 years, add more square footage to the home, but not more than the other homes in the neighborhood. I’m in Texas, building & remodeling mostly in West Texas. Right now is actually becoming a time where more contractors are available to take on projects. The market is still busy for tradesmen but it is loosening up and not too many people take on huge projects that tear up their homes during the holidays. This usually creates a slow time for contractors & tradesmen from Thanksgiving through mid February. Find a reputable contractor and go for it!

Take your time on a house. Older homes have nice wood floors, and loads of character. On the flip side how old is plumbing (pressure on old copper pipes is tough), windows may need replaced to open, insulation will need to be blown in for heating and cooling savings, and foundation. If hot water heater is in attic scratch it.

I like the word “present” and “mindful”. We are such a fast paced society and always connected, always surrounded by noise and lots of stuff. I think trying to be present each day, because ultimately, today is all anyone has, is the biggest step towards less anxiety and being more grateful. Does this sound easier than it is? Yes. Preaching to myself here. :) I also think that it can be a huge relief to accept that daily life is mostly ordinary. Most people have to do ordinary every day and it’s a beautiful skill when people make the ordinary in their life meaningful and beautiful. It’s a skill we can all learn and benefit from. I guess that’s what you mean by romanticizing. We all have to practice it. Our consumer society is used to finding quick fixes (like you said: new, new, new everything), but those fixes are not lasting. And because of that those “fixes” can become an addiction because we don’t know how to be present anymore with just us or other people and with what we have. Our society is a hugely addictive society. That said, there is nothing wrong with liking new things, exploring new things etc. There is nothing wrong with liking nice things in your life and wearing nice clothes etc. I have always loved those things and still do, but, once again, I think it is good to think about it like you did in your video. I think it’s something that more and more people are trying to figure out because our world is such a crazy place. And starting out by enjoying coffee and being present with family, or enjoying a simple grocery run and becoming aware of the abundance in our life is such a good step! I think by doing that, we can find a balance between enjoying new and enjoying the ordinary. I had not planned to leave a long comment but this topic gets me going. :) It’s a life long journey but it’s definitely a great goal to have.

Chronically depressed person's POV on romanticizing life: it's simply a way of acknowledging that life is inherently uninteresting, and that we need to intentionally tell ourselves stories about our experiences that enable us to relive them in ways that give us the feelings we wish we had while we experienced them.
