ABOUT ME
My name is Kian (23), I have a quirky sense of humour, and my favourite organ is the kidney (who makes regular appearances in my videos).
Should all things go according to plan I will be graduating with my MD come 2022! My goal with this channel is to share the RAW and REALISTIC parts of being a medical student through my personal experience to better inform people who are interested in medical school...or at least make you smile
I'm still learning how to make videos and I look forward to seeing how this channel IMPROVES and EVOLVES. Constructive feedback always welcome!

I only had a 2-week rotation in Psychiatry and I saw so many cases in such a short amount of time that honestly changed me forever as a doctor. You learn a lot about yourself and other people during that time. Mental health matters!

thank you so much for being honest and sharing your internal struggles, because I felt heard, I felt that i have someone that i look up to, actually relatable. and to see how you put efforts to be there for urself and come back each time stronger really inspired me. thank you. and i hope we can stop feeling guilty of putting our human needs first, because we are so much worthy. may you become one of the greatest doctors. 💜

Hey there! Fellow 3rd year Canadian med student here :) I’m always looking forward to your vlogs! I just got out from my psychiatric rotation and it’s cool to see someone from another province do the same!I totally relate to the feeling of being burnt out at the end of the day and not having enough energy to do anything productive and then feeling guilty the next day. And the constant self-doubt and feeling like we’re letting ourselves down is indeed pretty rough, I think every student doing clinical rounds has felt that. We’re told to try and separate our feelings at work and the ones in our personal life but it’s easier said than done. I hope you have the opportunity to talk with your peers or friends/family who are not in the medical field, it truly helps to detach ourselves from what we have to go through on a daily basis at the hospital. By doing this vlog you are surely helping other students like me réalise that they are not struggling alone, so thank you for doing this and don’t give up, we’re gonna make it and be great doctors!

Thanks for being so vulnerable! I’m in my gap year studying for my MCAT and I just started a job that they kind of just throw trainees into, and I related to everything you said about letting people down (even though I’m new and still learning, so it’s expected that I won’t be perfect at my work all the time... but it still feels crappy). Love your vlogs Kian, I’m excited to see all the great things coming in your future 🤩

Thanks for sharing some of your perspective and struggles, Kian. I know it’s not easy to open up and feeling like you’re bringing the mood down. But speaking for myself as someone who recently got a med school interview, it’s refreshing to know about some of the challenges you’re having so they don’t hit me unexpectedly in medical. By you opening up, I can actually anticipate them coming around the corner :)

What you are experiencing is called “transference”. And it is great you are aware of your feelings and practiced self care. The mental health field is not for everyone. This video gave me so much hope for the future as my future plan is to work in the Psych ward. And your feelings are valid. Your internal struggles allowed me to relate to you. I feel bad when I want to take a break or get some fresh air. I guess our feelings are universal.

i can totally relate, i have my A levels coming up in May and after that I have to prepare to write my medical admission test, i feel swarmed with work and i feel like i know nothing, so i just take it one day at a time and focus on being present when i learn instead of focusing on all that i have to get through or dont know. So yeah, you've got this kian and anybody going through school stress!

I can totally relate but I do feel you're doing great. Me here, my anxiety is much more stronger that it has ever been. And being in Medical college doesn't help at all. I've been thinking of giving up for the sake of my mental health but I do know no one will understand what I'm going through. Pepole here genuinely want to finish this cursus while I've been thinking of throwing everything including myself away. And my parents really want me to succeed here. So Kian, you are really doing great ❤️

Trust me… it’s worse than prison. I worked in a prison and I was a patient inpatient in the past…. It’s worse than actual prisons….it makes people feel like animals. Thankfully I didn’t have to be put in a room by myself like that… but medications caused my illness. It sucked. Iatrogenesis is a huge issue in America. I’m a psychology major looking to go into psychiatry to only prescribe meds as a very last approach. I was greatly hurt by the world of psych but now I want to give back to patients by never treating them as badly as I was. There are still good psychiatrists left. Psych drugs can really fog our reality and sense of self. And sadly can take acute issues and quickly make them chronic.

So scary how many people now have bad mental health compared to the past. I really think it’s people losing religion and social media. Religion really is so good for your mental health. Even if you don’t believe you can’t deny that turning your fears and struggles over to a higher power is so so helpful. That’s how AA works too. And the fellowship and church family you make. People always willing to be there for you. Religion and God are there for the bad times. When your lose your family member believing they’re going to heaven is very comforting. Getting a horrible hand dealt to us at times, believe God has your back and there’s a plan really comforts the over active mind. And then social media… probably the worst thing humans could have done. Just so toxic and bad for us to constantly be online 😢 we’ve gone too far. If we stuck with just have a flip phone and having one home computer to look stuff up and maybe a few emails but you had to sit down at a desk and use it. Having this in our pocket 24/7 is just not working. I definitely think we should have kept phones like they were. And never made social media. Now you don’t have to go out and meet people. You don’t have to try to make friends. You see others personal lives and compare them to yourself. No privacy. Idk 🤷‍♀️ Oh and another is probably loss of the family unit! It is so normal now to not have a dad. The normalization of being a criminal or drug addict and having kids and dumping them. And instead of people being shamed and tre comforting. So sad. We should bring back shame for sure. You should be ashamed if you hurt your own child. It’s not about you. It’s about them. You should be ashamed to leave your family. Kids suffer so much from us telling their parents their own feelings are more important than their children’s 😢

Hi Kian! Thanks so much for sharing your own mental health journey and how you're honestly feeling during 3rd year! I'm so excited but so so so nervous to start in just 2 months.. I feel like it hasn't hit me yet. It's crazy to think that I'm not the only one who feels incompetent and always feeling like I should've been studying more and what not, but it definitely makes me feel less alone to hear that a lot of other med students feel the same way! I can't believe the end of clearkship is near for you, I hope you're super proud of yourself! Sending you lots of good vibes and positivity! ❤️
