    Hey, Dr. Im 39. Last night I decided I want to be a psychiatrist. I don't really care how old I'll be when I finish lol. I work as a stationary engineer now and make a good salary, but I'm not doing the same job my whole life and after reading a few books (about a bit of everything) Psychiatry is my calling. I'd like for you to be my beacon and confidant. You have pleasant energy. I trust what you are saying.

    @@DoktoraJackie I kind of see it all as the same thing, manifested in particular ways. Half of my happiness (it's kind of sad, lol) comes from seeing similarities in fields (or subjects) that seemingly are not related. I've made the mind and behaviors the most essential thing to learn, but in my limited knowledge, many things are constructed the same way...just not as complicated.

    have you considered being a psychiatric nurse practiciner, it takes. a little less school if you get into an accelerated nursing program (1 .5 years long) and then do a 3 year psychiatric nurse practitioner doctorate. from what i’ve researched psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychiatrist have extremely similar roles.

    If/when I finally go see a psychologist or psychiatrist I fully understand I am responsible for “fixing” myself. They are there to help and guide me and I will trust them even if the results are not exactly what I hoped for. Even though people are struggling, all you can do is try to help and that’s noble in itself. 🙂

However, I've come to realize and appreciate just how valuable having an education is. I want to be known for something more and push the limits of my capabilities. I'm still young and don't want to settle my scope of knowledge here. I want to understand the complexity of something that I'm very passionate about as someone who's suffered mental health for a very long time; supporting the vision of becoming more than who I am now. Thank you Dr Jackie for sharing your experience. I wish I could have been a soft speaker and having patience to listen to my patients. I am also a medical doctor. Ever since my pre med course, I would want to become a psychiatrist someday. Early this year I entered Psychiatry Residency in a government medical center in our country. Yet I quit residency because my past traumas resurfaced. During my ER duty I experienced a passive aggressive approach of my senior doctors to the point I lose myself on the process. From that day on I was suffering from severe anxiety and having thoughts of suicide. I know to myself that I need help. I resigned on my job and seek consult of another psychiatrist and I started to take SSRI and anxiolytics. I hope one day I could go back to Psychiatry. But I received a job opportunity in Canada as a nurse and I accepted that offer. It would take me 3 years to finish my contract as a nurse before I could go back to serve my purpose, to become a Psychiatrist to help people suffering from mental problems

    I'm currently a business student in highschool, going to be a senior in a couple of months. I've got Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics with Psychology as my subjects and I've always been interested in psychology and helping people out. I've pretty much always been the 'therapist friend' and because I've studied a lot on psychology, I try to help them out with the knowledge I have, of course not diagnosing anything on them, but if I see patterns or symptoms, suggesting them to get checked just in case. [Turns out one of the two friends I asked to get checked did infact go and it turns out that he suffers with Bipolar Disorder I, Attachment Issues and Severe Anxiety Disorder. He goes to professional help now, but still asks me to help him out since he's closer to me than to a therapist, so I do what I can and listen] So seeing this, I practically have no knowledge with Biology, Physics and Chemistry since after 10th grade. I'm already aware getting into med school is gonna be a bit more challenging for me, considering I'm not the typical traditional aspiring med student but I'm gonna make it work nonetheless. Any advice on how I could make the process better?

    Hi Keiskeez! noticing patterns is a great skill and so glad you encouraged and supported your friend in getting professional help!!! bravo!!! The thing about our careers is that we find it when we find it and I think finding mentors and reaching out to as many pre-med/medical students you possibly can to ask about their application process and experience will be the best thing.

I'm a psychiatry resident and I've been feeling this counter transference stigma that you've mentioned in the last part of the video .. I feel like I'm missing the feeling I had when I had rotations like in surgery, and sometimes I feel like have I decided wrong when I chose psychiatry?! but everything else is good in my job, but sometimes I feel I'm not satisfied or I don't do something big in my patient's life, I'm not worthy enough as a doctor. What's your advice for me to overcome this feeling? I've been a resident for one year only.

  • @DoktoraJackie

    that is definitely burnout creeping in and I wonder if it's because we are feeling frustrated with what we perceive as a lack of progress on your patients side? Hello, dr Jackie, thank you for the video. I am 25 and thinking to pursue the psychiatry career, Im starting preparing to go to medschool. Im very aware of the greatness of the comittment to choosing this path and I think I would be satisfied being a psychiatrists, Im just wondering about becoming overworked. I suffer from ADHD and it makes it very difficult to work more than 40hours/ weak, let alone the 40 can already be a challenge. My mom is a doctor (pediatrician and paliative medicine) and unfortunately the only thing I remember of her is that she is EXHAUSTED at home- all the time. I think she has ADHD too, because of many things but one f.ex is that you get hyperfocused doing work that interests you and then you are unable to do any other mundane things, like cooking a meal everyday. Im very afraid of coping my mothers lifestyle because I see how a sustainable daily routine is absolutely crucial for me to stay happy and energized. I think this awareness is on my advantage, but I still am not sure if the doctors' work/life in general conditions wont make my plans for a balanced life fail. I want to be a psychiatrist but I also want a life outside of being a doctor- to spend time on my own, with family, do some art- do you think that's possible? Im from Poland btw :)

  • @DoktoraJackie

    i agree that seeing how your moms life was really works to your advantage! I'd say at least in America, psychiatry has one of the best work life balance scenarios, definitely in comparison to pediatrics and palliative. I am not going to say it's not busy and medical school and training will be all encompassing for a while until you're finished but life as an attending can be adjusted to meet your needs largely by determining which setting you want to work in (academic vs private or outpatient vs consults or inpatient), etc. thank you for your thoughtful question!

    I’m a bit late, but I’m entering my freshmen year in august, and I have discovered I’m very passionate about the human brain, medicine, the biology behind mental illness, psychology, etc. i personally have struggled with mental illness, as I have diagnosed ADHD, OCD, social anxiety, as well as I recently started recovering and survived one of my lowest points relating to depression. I also am in the process of treating potential personality disorders and/or symptoms of bipolar depression. I want to help people, and be the person I never had but always needed. I am only 14 years old but still I have developed strong opinions and dreams. I am definetely not a straight A student, I just recently started bringing my middle school grades to Cs and Bs, as I was mostly failing previously. However, we took one class that counted for a highschool credit and towards our GPA and ended up getting over 100% in the class. I feel as I can get the grades up when I know it will count towards my passions. Still, I’m very confused what and what not to do to benefit this. I’ve always wanted to attend NYU, but I’m not sure what classes to take, majors/minors to look into, extracurricular activities to improve my application, etc. Do you have any advice?

    you're not late at all in deciding about what your career is. next steps would be to meet with an academic counselor and ensure that you're setup to complete classes that meet the medical school application requirements. See what types of clubs are offered and check out a few meetings before you commit.

    currently at 12th grade and my college life is right around the corner i am stuck between being a nurse or psychiatrist. Psychiatrist have been my dream since 8th grade,the nursing thing came across my mind when i entered senior high thinking just about the money. But i am not that confident about being a nurse, i am not that good at science ( even if psych is science) its just that i have less advantage if i enter nursing while i have an advantage if i enter psych. I like reading books also talking to people deeply or not, i am also curious about how our brain works so i think taking psyc is good for me. My family is kinda taken back whenever i said that i want to be a psychiatrist "Is that job even indemand?" so im still stuck. But thank you this helps me a lot!

    Being a psychiatrist has always been at the back of my mind but seemed a bit out of reach. For years, I wanted to be a police officer but a few months ago, my now-ex boyfriend who was also an officer at the time and a USMC vet who went to Afghanistan twice snapped and pulled his gun on me. It later turned in to him holding me hostage in our house. Now, I don't think I could handle having a gun pointed at me again so I'm looking for other career options. As of right now, I'm really interested in helping officers, veterans, and DV survivors with PTSD. The only thing I'm worried about now is the time and money it's going to require to get there.

    Hey Dr. J! I've been on the fence about choosing between Clinical Psychology or Psychiatry, my primary focus is Psychotherapy with the option of research. Now, you might be saying "Pick psychologist :)" but the thing is, for my research interests and interest in practice is the still developing field of hallucinogenic therapies and researching other ways we can use them to promote openness, plasticity, memory, learning, etc (all the mental health benefits we've recently discovered) but alas!!! a psychologist can't prescribe medication or hold clinical research with them if I recall. The current pioneers in the field ARE in psychiatry though, yet the argument with the FDA is that who should be allowed to work with these substances needs to drastically loosen to Psychologists and physicians, which gives me hope.....should I jump into med school and the debt? or look to psychology in hopes of a change and have the possibility to be funded where med school does not.

  • @DoktoraJackie

    @DoktoraJackie

    2 жыл бұрын

    WOW yes I understand the conundrum! I would say you could definitely work on a TEAM that would address the research questions you have regardless of your title. Your interest is very specific and I wonder if medical school plus PhD would be worth it if you aren't interested in clinical work at all. I'd say choose the career option that would give you the most flexibility outside of that specific research niche as well. Do you picture yourself interested in the work of a psychologist or psychiatrist outside of this research question. Perhaps that would help narrow it down for you!

    Hi!!!!! I am 31 and getting my bachelors of science in psychology to continue on to medical school to also be a child and adolescent psychiatrist. One of the things I keep going back and forth with myself about is the talk therapy. I really want this aspect but I know that's usually what a therapist does. As a psychiatrist do you still get to have those types of sessions or is it just mainly trying to diagnose and prescribe? I want to be able to help my patients without always having to prescribe. Plus there are the personality disorders that don't have medicinal tx options so do you still have patients who have NPD or Borderline personality disorders and if so how do you help them? I know kids are usually too young to be able to have those types of diagnosis but ive been real in to NPD lately!! Just trying to get a little insight to see where I need to be taking my career path because the talk therapy portion is important to me.

  • @DoktoraJackie

    @DoktoraJackie

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Brittanie! Talk therapy is often a luxury when working as a psychiatrist but this usually depends on the setting. If you work private practice or even in academia it will be more likely that you are able to carve out time to carry therapy patients longitudinally :) This is simply unlikely in the emergency room or inpatient setting. Part of being a psychiatrist is knowing when NOT to prescribe. Although not done enough, re evaluating diagnoses and determining whether patients even need to continue their medications should be a discussion that patients and their providers have regularly. in terms of personality disorders, unfortunately they are frequently comorbid with diagnoses that do often benefit from medications so must be considered if necessary. You will also be able to have a deeper understanding of the many ways these conditions can be managed as a psychiatrist, therapy or no therapy. hopefully that's helpful!!

Some have suggested to me that Psych NP might be a better route. Do you work with NPs, and can you tell me a bit about how these roles are different? I am willing to dedicate myself to medical school, but I am just looking into what might be the best option. Thank you so much for any advice you have!

  • @DoktoraJackie

    @DoktoraJackie

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! It seems like you have a very clear route planned. I do work with psych NPs and they typically manage under a supervising psychiatrist. Oftentimes tho given the mental health crisis, the cases they find themselves with especially if not in an academic center might be very complex with inadequate support and supervision which is my biggest concern for mid levels due to high burnout. I'd say the medical training would obviously place you in a better position in terms of medication management however if therapy is truly where your heart is set then prescribing medications actually might stop you from being able to dedicate most of your time to that because of the huge need for prescribers. Salary is good for both options but "good" is of course so subjective and medical school is definitely more expensive than nursing.

  • @DoktoraJackie

    @DoktoraJackie

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi 5HT!! (such a clever name haha) I wish it was less stigmatized everywhere and I notice that the sense is that it's less archaic to believe this here in the US but it still definitely exists which is disappointing but hoping the movement is going in the positive direction internationally. In terms of job satisfaction, I feel it is more likely a reflection of the system or setting you find yourself working in. Luckily, because the supply is so low and the demand is so high, you do have the option of trying out a job and moving on to bigger and better things more easily than other specialties. Earning potential is also quite varied depending on location and setting. Academia tends to pay the least versus private psychiatry or emergency departments and inpatient psychiatric hospitals. There is also the school setting or those who do mainly procedures like ECT and/or TMS. You can find more information by googling "'average doctor salaries by specialty." Also make a note of how much it has changed through time; for example, pediatrics and psychiatry in more recent years has had boosts in income. I think it is hard to argue that the lifestyle of psychiatry is one of the best amongst all specialties in terms of work-life balance :) Hope that's helpful!

    From what I’ve heard it can take from 8-12 years to become one and I’ve wanted to get into the field that works with the minds of people for a while, it started with criminal psychology and I’ve worked my way up to psychiatry, but it seems like I would be nearly middle aged by the time I’m actually a psychiatrist, so is that time frame accurate and if it is, could there be some alternative?

  • @DoktoraJackie

    Hi! Yes so in the US, it starts in college premed which is four years then medical school which is also four years then residency which is another 3-4 years. if you would like to do a fellowship then you add a year (or two if child psychiatry). most people are in their early 30s when they complete training. there is no other shorter alternative unfortunately if you want to be a psychiatrist. hopefully that's helpful! thank you for your question!

    So I'm in 8th grade currently. At my school I got recommended to take college classes next year at the college. So if I'm doing early college while I'm still in high school (while earning credits for both) I could maybe graduate early, and have only 2 years left of college. If that's the case, would I have to wait that long to become a psychiatrist? I know most people are around 30, but since I'm getting an 'early start' would I be kind of young when I start? Like 20's?

    PGY-3 (third year psychiatry resident here) who is 28 currently which means I will finish before 30. This is more or less as fast as one can go, as I did graduate early from undergrad and also had plenty of college coursework and AP classes which allowed me to accelerate my education. I don't mean to discourage you, and I wish you the best of luck in pursuing your dreams! However, the "fine print" is real with regards to college coursework while in high school. Certain classes may not only count for your undergraduate degree but also for medical school per-requisites. I fully anticipate you may have challenges in several ways with attempting to rush the process that is medical training.

    You should set a manual focal point on your camera. Just setting up something where you'll be sitting, manually dialing in the focus on that, then hit record and sit where the object was would work. I think you have autofocus on causing the video to push in and out between you and the plants which is a bit distracting from the content.

We are trained in many therapies such as cognitive behavioral, motivational, dialectical behavioral, family structural and parent management training. You can incorporate it in many sessions as you go but also, depending on your setting, can carry a few therapy patients with specific needs that will cater to a specific type of therapy.

In my opinion, the major isn't as important as getting all the premed requirements out of the way. As long as you complete all the classes you're expected to in order to apply to medical school, it doesn't matter what major you are. My thought is that pre-med is easier for people since your schedule would be built so that you do complete these requirements. hi Julio! That IS confusing! I'm not sure what they meant; psychology has been added to the standardized test but you do not need to major in psychology. As long as you meet all the pre-requisites for medical school, then you should be okay regardless of what major you take (of course it is just easier if you tell your counselors that you are pre-med and they ensure you take classes at your college that meet all the pre-requisites since what is available differs between colleges)! Make sure you check what the medical schools you're interested in would want you to take as well prior to application. hope that's helpful!
