Hi Liann, I really appreciate this video and the fact that you’re sharing your own experiences with us. However, I am really concerned with the competitiveness at McGill. I’m currently a grade 12 student and I’m looking at different universities in Canada. Frankly speaking, I really love the artistic and unique ambience that McGill brings to the visitors. Nonetheless, after watching your other video reflecting that hard-work don’t usually pay off at McGill I started to worry if I should choose McGill due to the intense competitiveness of medical schools. (GPA core based) Since I sincerely believe that a more supportive environment would increase people’s potential magnificently, I’m not sure if I should apply to McGill as to other universities? Therefore, could you please elaborate on that? Thank you very much!

Hi William!! Thank you so much for your message. Haha I can tell that you're really weighing your options which is AMAZING. Something you should be doing. I have absolutely no regrets for going to McGill. For me, the artistic and unique ambience you spoke about made it WELL WORTH IT. I grew so much into the person I am today because of my university experience there. I didn't do great in school initially at McGill, but I eventually got the hang of HOW to excel (albeit a little too late). I do have friends with 4.0 so it is possible!! Also, I think if you were to go to any of the top schools in Canada, McGill, UofT, UBC, etc, the coursework is going to be tough.

This advice is probably too late but might help others so I'll still post it. If you're serious about getting into medical school, don't go to McGill. However, if you're serious about med school, you should also have a serious back-up plan. Keep in mind that for every 100 applicants, there are 98-99 rejections. You have to have a min. 3.8 GPA + 80th percentile MCAT scores + strong interview. The last thing you want is to be stuck with an undergrad degree from a random lower ranked university and not get into med school, and not have a back-up grad school to go to. Also, keep in mind that some grad programs are intensely difficult to get into (straight A or sometimes straight A+ average minimum, plus other intense requirements), and others are not (straight A- minimum), so *which* program you want to apply to matters a lot. I'm a graduate student at McGill currently and I could not have gotten in if I did my undergrad there. They look at your GPA and they don't care nearly enough about what university you came from (their GPA adjustments are always very minor, like a few %).

I went to McGill as well. I was near top of my class from High School. What makes McGill is the students. When I was there, all the rest of the students were also tops of their class.
