I think Hayley deserves great praise for all five of these training vlogs, including the one about the test fail. For any of us guys and girls planning to take these HGV courses, they're an invaluable way of understanding the process, and takes some of the fear out of it. I did think Hayley was at a bit of a disadvantage not using a conventional artic, but also an old manual vehicle. In this instance it didn't make much difference. Very good instructors though.

Well put Kevin. I also thought that reversing one of these drawbars would be quite difficult, a conventional artic may be larger but you can see more of what the trailer is doing.

You’re really brave to commit to putting these videos up Hayley, seeing as there’s no way to be certain of the outcome. The disappointment of failing the Class 1 is an indescribably powerful feeling. The seemingly most insignificant thing can throw you on the day. It’s a tight rope of concentration. Hang in there. X

Yeah I failed my class 1 the day was horrible I was super nervous, the drive before went really well except we went to fuel up and another lorry driver said your gonna regret that 😅 and then the Instructor argued with me for 20 minutes before the test about a bloody email I never received that they never told me I needed

My first class 1 attempt was over within 10 minutes. I messed up reversing exercise big time. I took 3 shunts moving my truck from cone A to cone B. The examiner approached me at this point and stated that YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN 3 SHUTS AND IT SEEMS YOU ARE STRUGGLING. I put my hands up cos at that point I was so.confused and told him I couldn't do this mauver. He said you are not ready for your test yet. Get some more reversing lessons and come back. I took another 3 lessons just reversing in the yard. Then everything clicked and passed my test second time with 4 minors. I know how it feels. We all have been there. However coupling and uncoupling was the easiest task for me. I watched a very good video on youtube about it. It was mentioned in the video to remember the word BLACK. When to uncouple follow thi word. Start from B that stand for trailer brake. L lower the legs downs A disconnect amxillary lines or suzies. C for clip take the clip off and K for king pin. Its the lever you pull out. The trialer is ready to be disconnected. Do the reverse order when coupling. Don't worry about it. Whatever happens is always lord almightys will. Its not going to be long before you pass class 1.

Unfortunately, drivers do get killed by their own vehicles . Last year , at the In-bev Brewery in Magor, a Forgien driver was cleaning the bed of his Trl because it was deemed to dirty to load . He fell out of the back doors on to his head , he did not survive.

Just done my c+e today in wag and drag,i binge watched your c+e vlogs have been so informative and great help to me and we'll worth watching to anybody doing or wanting to do c+e with wag and drag. Totally gutted for you as I nearly did the exact same thing as you did,i only had 2x7 hrs training and it is so much to take in and my nerves were totally shot this morning. fortunately I managed get myself together and managed to pass without any faults (Goodness knows how ,as I thought I cocked the reverse up as the drag started snaking about going into the bay,and when trying to correct it I would over compensate and trailer would go off the other way,so decided to take the shunt to straighten myself out).the actual drive was made a lot easier for me, as we we're in a lot of traffic, so couldnt really get any speed up,but had lots other hazards like recycling collecting and Travis perking unloading on a crossroads causing mayhem. really hope you get your pass and retest soon and keep up the good work with the informative vlogs.

Easy tip for remembering the procedure for coupling and uncoupling...whichever way the truck is going is the direction of the checks...ie when coupling the truck is going backwards so your checks go backwards: pin, lines, legs, brakes, number plate...uncoupling: number plate, brakes, legs, lines, pin...this also helps to stop you forgetting the number plate when swapping trailers which is a common amd costly error x

Its proper nerve racking but next time try and calm down a bit. You also need a bit of luck too because on my c+e wagon and drag test after the coupling/uncoupling (which was the last thing on the test) the examiner asked me if i would be happy to take it out on the road and i said yes he asked again if i was sure i would be happy to take it out and then he bent down and was looking at the coupler then i realised something was wrong so i said i would probably at this stage before driving off do a double check so i walked around the truck checking then saw the pin had not gone in fully, i explained to the examiner what i noticed then he let me re-couple back up and he said are you happy now and i said yes. He said jump in the cab and after what seemed like an eternity he said congratulations you have passed. I was very very lucky. Indeed and only got 3 minors.Good luck on your next go👍

Great videos, not many people would not have the bottle to film whilst leaning themselves. Your videos have shown whats its like in real life , people know what to expect know. Reds & greens , as you said yesterday was not your day, but your day will come soon. You will soon be out of hours in a service station with a class one . When this happens Greggs wont be far away !!!. I work for the railway , it took me six years to get a job and over 50 applications. I took the pile of standard rejection letters to an interview one day and got a job. 31 years later im still playing with trains so to speak.

When i took my class 1 the guy from the driving school after me commented on how cool the examiners car was when he saw it parked at the test center. The examiner said "do you like this car"? "Yes it is great" the guy answered. "It is mine you see"!! When he did the coupling and uncoupling he left the engine running!! As he told us afterwards he hit two curbs and he was a fail all the way. The examiner passed him!! I had a flawless test and when we came back to the center he wrote 13 small mistakes gave me a proper bollocking and passed me because I was almost perfect!! This happened on 2000 in a test center at the north of the midlands!! Thanks to westgate trainnng the old sammy jones for taught me properly!! These were the days...

I know exactly what you went through Hayley, I failed my Class 1 test first time too. I took a tight right hand bend too narrow and caused a car to stop otherwise it would of hit me. Examiner pulled me over straight afterwards and took me back to test centre. 2nd test I thought I'd failed on the re-couple where I almost pulled off without releasing trailer brake, I was gutted, but the examiner laughed and said don't worry that's not a fail. I passed with 2 minors. Well done on passing your Class 1(I have seen your new videos) We are about the same stage in our HGV careers. Stay safe. Alex, Newport South Wales

There's a reason it didn't go well... Sometimes we never know why. Like you say it just wasn't meant to be today. Try again next time! Happy truckin' 🚚💨

Aww Hayley. I have done exactly the same thing as yourself. When under test conditions and scrutiny we can make silly mistakes. I know I shouldn’t but I couldn’t help but think they were extra cautious because I’m a 32 year old female. For the uncouple/recouple it’s a process and I always remember BLACK. Break, leg, airway, clip, kingpin. Reverse for recouple. :)

Don’t worry about it. All you need is more practice, especially with dealing with pressure. Those examiners want you to fail, as it means more business, as you take retests. I took about 60 hours worth of Class 1 lessons (money was no object) and have had three tests (before covid stopped me in my tracks. I’m now just doing Class 2 work till all this covid nonsense goes away). I got robbed on two of the Class 1 tests and legitimately failed one. It’s all about confidence and standing up to the examiners bullying attitude by being confident. And yes, never speak to them, unless spoken to. Their “I don’t want you to tell me, I want you to show me” spiel is meant to be intimidating. Don’t let them rattle you. Also, I took my Class 1 lessons without doing any Class 2 work first (I had my Class 2 for a few months while I was off work sick with a dodgy knee), so my driving wasn’t the best. But if I can almost pass Class 1, then somebody like you (with all that Class 2 experience) will easily pass next time. Just have a few more lessons first though... get your trainer to make room for you. If your trainer can’t, then maybe look elsewhere? Be positive Hayley, and best of luck for next time 👍

Hayley. I failed my class 1 test for the second time two days ago. I was 30 minutes into the driving section. I passed the couple and uncouple, the reversing. I failed this time on a mirror check on a right hand bend. I had straddled the lane thinking no one could get in the gap..... but no I was wrong! I didnt check the left mirror before the right hand and it was classed as a major so an instant fail. I only had three minors until that point....... the first test I knocked over the B cone. The second test I nailed the reversing and couple and uncouple. I see it as progress. Keep at it love. Lets keep failing forward! Remember JK Rowling was told by 25 different publishers that Harry Potter was rubbish and refused to publish it! Come on girl! We can do this!!!!!!!
