It’s ridiculous that in the practical test you’re only allowed 2 shunts. Experienced drivers can do it without shunting or more commonly 1 shunt but let’s be honest most of us probably to 3 or 4 shunts minimum to get into somewhere awkward. No one cares as long as you get it on the bay. :)

@@JamesBond-kh8dk I agree, also when reversing into the bay your only allowed to get out once to check the distance, along as you don't hit anything what does it matter if the trainee gets out 3-4 times or something

Hayley, stop knocking yourself. You really are doing extremely after just 3 weeks C+E driving. I agree with all the other positive comments here. Just take your time. Look at each reverse before you make it and decide which is the best way of approaching it. Don't let anyone rush you - just take your time. I've just retired and am missing driving so much it isn't true. Watching you takes me back to when I first started back in 2008 and I see so much of myself in you. You have good days and bad days. You can do the same reverse some days and get it right first time and then other days you completely hash it up. Do not be discouraged. I've seen some drivers rip mudguards off trailers and all sorts during reversing - you are doing great. Keep at it and try to enjoy it. Drive safely.

I've watched a very experienced driver reverse on to a marked bay in a DC and made it known I was watching him. He went to pieces!! Took him about 5 goes to get the thing straight and central. He called me names and we had a good laugh. Two days later he did the same to me...! GIT... :-))

Nice nice vid Hayley, I noticed you were in the sun...remember the old trick of keeping the *"inside"* of your windscreen very clean then you can still see even when into sun - if not, then you'll be100% blind due to glare. 👻 You are brilliant and inspiring. I've not even done my class 1 yet and you are helping me loads!! I hope we meet, I'll buy you a Cappuccino!!🌺 I wish we drove together you are as paranoid as I am - LL! Only kidding, you are just thorough🤗♥️ If I'm as good as you if I qualify, then I will be a very happy driver. Yep, go slow, steer fast, when reversing. For the poles, could you not get a block of wood to place between the poles and the board? So that the inertia of braking wont jam the boards against the pole. Then, when you need to pull them out just smack the wooden blocks out with a hammer 🔨 They are heavy hey?!👍I've carried them!! Milton Keynes, be advised there is a weighbridge yard there and the cops love pulling you in and weighing your axles and generally trying to mess up your day. While you shift the weight along the trailer using a metal pole, they come up to you and tease you theyre hoping you will lose it and land them one, at 8 am in the morning!

Hi Hayley, your reversing is improving well. My instructor Badg said that the industry being classed as male dominated has to stop as there are lots of ladies driving both class 2 and 1 now and he also finds that the ladies are easier to teach than men 😉 keep up the good work and this video is definitely making me consider doing class 1 sooner that I had originally thought, once done I can choose which I do plus being more flexible when it comes to finding work. Finshed my cpc but still waiting for the card!

If you go out in the rain without a coat - you'll get wet! If you take a coat and it doesn't rain - you'll be fine. Choosing which licence to get is easy. If you want to drive anything then get C+E. If you stop at C then you restrict what you can do. Get C+E and you can drive anything! Good luck by the way. Never be afraid to ask for help and if you're not sure GOAL. (Get Out And Look!)

Such as life, no one promised an easy ride, persistence pays, if you rewind back to teaching days, what would you say to your students? DON'T give up! giving up is not an option, you know you can do it, soon you will look back, you might even laugh at yourself, and ask: what was that all about? in my eyes, your reversing is going on the right direction, for a new class one you doing great, don't doubt yourself, keep positive and believe you will be as good as anybody else, even the oldest dude in town, as a bad reversing some times, I do, do I care about it? not a chance, I even laugh at myself, because I`m not perfect, I`m only human, therefore open to failure. Practice makes it better, including class 1 reversing.

Hi Haley. I'm in exactly the same position as you in regards to reversing. I passed my class 1 10 years ago but just started a class 1 job on the 2 of August 2021. Experience drivers say "don't worry it'll just come to you" which is great but when all eyes are on you that's when the pressures really on and I get flustered and forget which way I've turned the steering wheel and mess up, but one thing I can say the help I get from some drivers is absolutely brilliant. One driver back the trailer into a bay for me which I thought was cool, even though I wanted to do it myself but I just watched how he did it (which he made look so easy). But like you I think the key is to take my time and go slowly, because it gives me a chance to correct the steering wheel when I've turned it the wrong way. It's great that you put this in your video because now I know it's not just me who's struggling with reversing. So keep up the good work really enjoying your videos looking forward to the next one!

You are really good driver for the time you have been at it. Watch any truck you can reversing and talk yourself through what you think he/she is doing and why. If you need a second shunt pull forward more, at least twice as much as you thing you need (if you have the space). I used to always walk the rout i was reversing if it was new to me, get out the cab have a look (don’t get run over).

Greetings from Scotland! You're doing fine Haley! In this job you never stop learning, which is a good reason to be in this job! When everything begins to get boringly routine, it's time to move on! I saw on the news this morning that the UK needs an extra 100,000 Truck drivers NOW! SO Haley, tell your friends, especially the lady friends, that if they want a challenge in life and love the open road, get their HGV class 1 (LGV C+E as it's known now) license and make some good money! I'm retired but it even tempts me! Catch you on the next video Haley! 👍😄

Hi Hayley, re the lifting out of those heavy posts. When I first started work I was shown that you did not need to be strong to do heavy lifting you just need a good technique. First I would suggest a pair of those really grippy gloves the ones with the plastic lattice work pattern, just for lifting those posts out. Grab the post and then place your shoulder against it. Now instead of trying to lift it directly ease it whilst gently rocking it back and forth you should slowly stand up with it and hopefully you will find that as you rock it gently there will be a place with very little friction holding the post then it should lift out with less effort. Whilst trying to lift directly if those metal posts are in contact with one side it will be held by both friction and gravity making the job much harder. Hopefully this will make it much easier in future. Technique over strength. Oh and those beads in your window they do worry me....wait a minute, are they worry beads? Well they worked. All the best Hayley onward and upward.

Bit of Advice here your a clever girl you’ve managed to get your licence and this far and from what I can see a perfectly safe capable new driver the rest comes with experience which no matter how long you will be driving for you’ll never stop gaining it ……Don’t let Anybody rush you wether its loading strapping especially reversing…Never let anybody make you do something you don’t want to do…Never be rushed into anything your not comfortable with..take your time take a shunt make a phone call and ask…someone who knows…not someone who thinks they know…Had my licence 25 year my family ran trucks for 60 years no body has been born yet who knows everything about this game it’s impossible and we all were new drivers @ 1 point….we all make/made mistakes and always will….and as long as you learn by them it’s all good….had many a bump pulled fuel tanks off any amount of smashed mirrors…Bumpers etc etc…Most important thing in this game is taking your time don’t be rushed don’t feel intimidated pressured to do anything your not comfortable with if a reverse takes 5 shunts and 20 minutes that’s life

what a surprise still living in the 1930's!! lol, long, heavy, straight sided object with no handles to make removing them a fair bit easier. great to hear you read the tips, but yeah slow and steady is quicker than a bodge job, great vlog Hayley, and listen to the advice it is sound advice, I did try posting the same advice to your last vlog, but yeah 1/2 the battle is won through the initial positioning, makes it a whole lot easier to guess where the trailer is going to end up, rather than trying to reverse from a nearly dead straight position, with say a door somewhere to the good side, at a 90 degree turn.

With what you were saying at 21.40, you have to switch off from other people and let them deal with their own impatience! Literally switch off!! I find it works well. Your next point about taking it slow is key though, you'll find you over steer less and it'll be much easier! You're coming on in leaps and bounds, 6 months you'll be doing it with your eyes shut.

With regard to the heavy poles, a decent pair of gripper gloves would definitely help . Personally, i would hug the pole in the squat position, then use the power of my quads to power upwards whilst using my arms and chest to keep it as straight and vertical as possible. Which would also keep it close to your centre of mass, thereby making it as light as practicable. Failing that, go on the dark web and buy some steroids, you'll be pulling them out with one hand! 😁

Agreed Brad, I'm a smaller guy and I was thinking wrapping a short length of strap around the base a couple of times so that it grips the post and using it like handles on the sides of the post and using leg power. Here in the States we would have mandatory classes to teach us how to lift that sort of thing so as not to injure ourselves. They always teach us to lift with our legs and not our backs.

Hayley I know it’s frustrating when you trying to get reversing right, just try and be relaxed and take your time as long as you don’t hit anything does not Matter how many shunts you take, I don’t care who I hold up to reverse safely, I’m on containers, I’ve had it before where I’ve had a hard blindside, I shocked myself and got it in first go then later on I do a good side reverse and messed it up taking about 4/5 shunts, just the way it is, a no accident day is a perfect day.

I passed my class 1 back in 2013 - i spent about 2 weeks working for a company delivering food cargo to Lidl. I found reversing challenging as well and at one point it took me 45 minutes to reverse into a bay for a particular supermarket which got me even more flustered because it was taking me so long and made more mistakes. I haven't driven HGVs since 2013, the company I worked for weren't that great either, they encouraged working over driver hours etc and no training was properly given, I ended up breaking my foot. This all added to me thinking I made a huge mistake and never went back :(. I'm now thinking about getting back into it, your videos, espeically how you get nervous with reversing, I can absolutely relate to, I felt exactly the same way and probably will still feel if i do ever get back behind the class 1 wheel! It's good to see you are improving and feeling more confident with it. it can only get better from here!

It's a shame you had such a bad experience. They don't sound like a good company! I still get nervous about the reversing even now. When your sat in the cab looking in the mirrors, if you want the rear of the trailer to go Right (on side turn) then left hand down. If on the other hand ( no pun intended) you want the trailer to go left (blindside turn) then it's right hand down. Although this is true whether you look int mirror or out he window, when you look out the window the image is true and not reversed as it is in the mirror and that is probably muddling your brain a bit. Regarding the wide angle mirrors i always used to push the nearside mirror right out so when turning left at a junction when the back of the trailer left the main mirror it appeared in the wide angle mirror. The number of times i got in a truck and the wide angle mirror was set so badly, half of the image was the side of the cab which is neither use nor ornament. You are improving rapidly.

Really like your vids very down to earth. Passed class 1 in December after 20 years on rigids. And still struggling with reversing even now. We do a lot of rdcs and can't get straight on bays to reverse in due to trailers being opposite bays so can't get the angle right and end up shunting like a pleb!!!! Anyone on here give me any advice it would be appreciated.

I'm one of your "new" subs... from across the pond in the US. You are doing great... stay positive. I really think that in many cases women do much better than men even with much less experience than their male counterpart, especially in some of those situations like at your delivery at the start of this video. Being a guy myself, I have to just put my pride aside and admit that it is very true in my opinion. I think women in general tend to be a bit more detail oriented than men and in lots of cases that's a big benefit. I've seen really close tight loading areas and veteran male truckers with 40 or 48 foot trailers struggle only to have a huge truck (US Style Truck) with a 53 foot trailer back in, in one try and a young lady bounce out of the driver's seat making all the men feel like idiots. I grew up on a farm and started driving all sorts of things when I was around 8 or 9. Even now after I've had decades of experience my mum can still put me in my place at times and make me feel like I'm still new at it. Again, don't be hard on yourself, you're doing well... Stay positive and stay safe! Cheers from across the pond!

Going slowly helps, observers get bored easily. Lol. A " Two Handed Grab" would make lifting the posts easier, maybe a " G-Gramp" , a heavy duty one clamped on the post, concentrating lifting, rather than gripping and lifting. Great driving and great vlog, I didn't hear any moaning, just stating possible facts. TTFN.

A guide for your distribution of weight, 3 axles on shopping trolly, each axle super single tyres 8tons each 3x8 =24 tons you mustn't exceed 24tons over those axles. Tractor unit, 10tons on drive axle, 6ton on mid-lift axle, 7tons on steer axle=10+6+7=23tons over the unit. Now slowly pull onto the weight bridge, if you can see the display for the weight as you go on the bridge stop as the unit is on the bridge and stop, you shouldn't see more than 23tons or you are over on your tractor weight. Or put the rig, the lot, on the bridge, get your gross, pull forward until the unit is just off the bridge, you mustn't see more than 24 tons showing on the display. when you get pulled in for a weight check most things the wheel-tappers find will be blamed on you not your boss. Lastly, your driving on the benders is good, just give yourself time to see and plan, Well done, we all start at the beginning.

You have come on massively in the last couple of weeks before long you will be acting it without a thought
