Vlog #49 Why I left the colony *twice*

One might think that it’s going to be easier the second time they decide to leave, unfortunately its not, if anything Its more difficult, anyway that was the case for me.
the vlog is shorter this week I spent most of my time with my family, enjoying their company and just getting a little rest while I filmed.

I was watching a documentary on Hutterite life, and one of the elders of the community said something that truly moved me. He said, “From the cradle to the grave your taken care of, and you will never be alone in a time of need.” I will never forget that.

@@Lauren-vd4qe - Every family, community, state, & country has rules one must live by to remain a member. You could go live alone in the woods to try and have complete freedom to do whatever you want, only to find the rules of God and nature are even there. The point of life is not to indulge your every want, but to learn to submit to what is good and right and just (God). I spent 50 years doing what I wanted, grasping at happiness, and trying to be “free”, only to find out submission to God is the only true freedom that exists. It seems to me the Hutterites are doing their best to live their lives in submission to God, together as a community, and although they are imperfect just like all of us, they seem to be doing it pretty well.

Notwithstanding the recent pandemic, life for a single person in Canada or the US is lonely. Urban life lacks any sense of community. From what little I know about Hutterites, I think they have the found the 'secret sauce' for Community. Modern culture and living could learn a lot from examining this young woman's videos. Her portrayal, although light-hearted at times, of Colony life depicts values and structure to which we need to return. Please continue this work as I believe your message is timely and important. And finally, thank-you for taking the time and effort to share your thoughts and observations. May I say your maturity far exceeds that of your years. Kind regards, ..

I totally agree with you!!! I live by some apartment complexes and there are so many very young women there with 3 or 4 tiny children of several races and no husband at all. They are dragging those kids out all hours to the store. And that's occuring thousands of other places!!! Society is breaking down.

I’m 59 now. When I was 24 I visited a Hutterite community for one weekend stay (I wrote to them in advance to ask if I could visit and determine if this was a life I wanted to live.) I lived the people and the way they live in community! But in all honesty, despite the lovely way they live I could not get over how cold it was there! I also thought it would be hard not to see my family back in Maryland very much if at all. Anyway, it was a beautiful community! We made food, the kids enjoyed ice skating, I watched them perform the play “Madam Butterfly”! And I had a very nice young woman stay near me and be my guide to teach me about life there. The most impressive thing was how they really live out their faith- they even made food and brought it into New York City to feed the homeless and share Jesus’ love.

I have been watching many of your videos. I am JUST fascinated! I have always been fascinated by Hutterited, but, particularly as I get older. In my 20's I felt such a strong desire to spread my wings, think deep, rebellious thoughts, being spontaneous. The older I get, I appreciate a simple, quieter life. I am comforted by boundaries and predictable routines. I wish I'd understood the value of these things when I was growing up on a small acreage in Alberta. What I saw as boring, I now view as peaceful. I often see Hutterites at my local Value Village and I smile if they look at me, but they are usually chatting with each other. Thank you, for allowing us all into your beautiful reality. It is just lovely. You are proof to young people everywhere that maturity is not gained from seeing and experiencing the whole wide world. It comes from self-discipline and faith and humility before God.

I am over 60 and I lonely. I just found your channel. I love it. Thank you so much for sharing this. I am in the Catholic Faith, though not sequestered (isolated from community), I find that many DO NOT understand my faith and that I am very limited on friendships and sharing. I love that you have your community. You are so young, yet you set such an example for me. Thank you.

Kathie I know it has been months but I saw your comment and my heart went out for you. May God place a family of believers around you ❤️ Psalm 68:4Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds ; rejoice before him-his name is the Lord. 5A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

I made a version of the pie and it was lovely! (from Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen by Mary-Ann Kirkby). Please share your recipe (if you havent already ;-) : Schuten Pie (Cottage-Cheese Pie) 1 1/2 cups dry-curd cottage cheese* 1 cup thick cream, or 1/2 cup whipping cream and 1/2 cup sour cream 1 egg slightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt 1/3 cup flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup Golden syrup 1/2 tsp nutmeg Stir all the ingredients together and pour into an unbaked pie crust. Bake at 350 F for approximately 45 minutes.

You are quite the beautiful enigma. Deep into the religion and a hard working family oriented woman. Yet that sparkle in your eye exceeds the boundaries that the colony life has put upon you. I know you well in some ways. I could have married my perfect catholic high school and grade school sweetheart. But no I left the parameters of my family and religion and chose the rebel lifestyle deep in the woods and carving out a farm and factory with far too many girls of improbable quality and upbringing. Such an adventure! But now that security of the group living looks wonderful. One can't just check on and out as it suits the self. Everything has a price and sometime the cost is too high.

Just found your channel. What I found interesting is that I found that my grandpa ( my mom's dad ) was Mennonite which I didn't know until a few years ago when my mom showed me pictures of his parents my great grandparents. I guess that's were I get my love for working in the garden and being out in the out doors come from it also comes from Grandma to but she was just a regular farmer's daughter lol

Your videos are so interesting and calm. If you get around to answering questions again, I would love to know who chooses the menu? Do things like fish tacos (which looked amazing) go over well with the older members? Do you always cook or are you on some kind of rotation? It doesn’t seem like you are with your family much or is that because you just don’t film with them? Thanks for posting!

glad you enjoy the videos. the ladies that are cooking choose the menu and yes we have a rotation we cook for a week with a partner and we have 10 cook weeks so I'm im in the kitchen every ten weeks. my family doesn't really want to be in vlogs but, I have started adding them more (still no faces allowed) maybe soon they won't mind as much.
