It may be just me, but my 890R Duke's quick shifter is not buttery smooth from 1-2nd and 2nd-3rd. gets a bit lurchy at times, almost like using a non QS bike and not using the clutch , resulting in that lurching motion as you bang it up the box!
Had a few false neutrals when accelerating up the box into corners only to find when rolling off the throttle I've gone into neutral, lovely !
I have tried a few things in this video, chain tension adjustment , gearshift adjustment and finally the QS arm adjustment ....but still not brilliant in the lower gears, even when riding it in a spirited manner.
Nearly 2000 miles and the 12 month service is due in 4 weeks , so the dealer should be reprogramming the QS as per the service manual instructions . Hopefully this will make a difference (or not).
Front sprocket cover taken off and no oil leaks from anywhere yet.
Still love this little weapon. Ride safe .
4:56 adjusting the position of the gear shift
8:35 out on the road testing the Quickshifter, is it any better?

UPDATED 13/03/2022
Folks, I have revisited the chain tension and ensured that the bike is definitely running on the tighter side of the 2-5mm recommended chain measurement, with another adjustment. This has certainly improved both the QS and the general chain clonking noises as and when you go over bumps. QS will be reprogrammed as part of the 12 month service schedule in the next few weeks.

I have a 21" 890 R . I don't use quick shifter between 1st and 2nd - it has a tendency to grab neutral. I only use quick shifter typically above 4000 rpm and on the gas. Normal street riding I use a mix of clutch and normal shifts with throttle pause. Lastly - Shift arm must be aligned properly as mentioned in your video. Love the bike. they all have quirks.

same with me on my 890 Duke...I dont use between 1-2nd and only on the revs on upshift.... If im just chugging through traffic etc...I always use the clutch. On downshifts, close the throttle all the way down and use some force...dont rest your foot on the shifter as it will predict you are about to use and blip the throttle.. good luck!

I have a 2020 890R, the quick shifter was horrible when I first got it. It was so bad I didn't even use it. Took it to the KTM dealership and had it recalibrated, tech told me the "datum" marking was not lined up properly as well. Once it was calibrated and lined up, the quickshifter + is brilliant. Anyone who has this bike needs to get this aspect of it fixed. It's one of my favorite parts of the bike. On the track I use the clutch twice, once to get the bike going and once to get it stopped. Other than that, its smooth as butter and works like a charm...

Hi there, mate I followed the chain tension video on my bike and didn't like how sloppy the chain was, and the bike didn't like it as well . The bike seemed to run ruff and the QS was awful, so I got home from a commute out of Central London and adjusted the chain on the tighter side of the setting eg 5 to 6mm and it improved the QS greatly. And now it's brilliant, just remember you have to be positive with your foot if you are not positive, especially with down shifts it can be jerky. I have found if I get a ruff QS response its normally me not being positive...hope this helps

I have a '21 890 (non r). Just added the QS two mos. ago. Dealer instructed me on upshifts to stay on the throttle and shift deliberately. While this works, I do notice that it shifts into 2nd & 3rd much easier when the revs are a bit higher. Lower rpms make shifts feel notchy and stubborn. I did hit neutral once at lower rpm and also once had it react as if I had pulled in the clutch for a second (but w/o completing the shift). It was weird and unexpected. Moral of the story: try higher revs and see if that helps.

Hi and thanks . Love my 890. Always makes me smile like a teenager!! Yup I use combination of QS and clutch . I did re-visit the chain tension after I posted the video and tightened again so it’s definitely on the 5mm end of the recommended range of 2-5mm !! Rides smoother and less clonking from the chain . Interesting if the reprogramming of the QS will make any difference at its 12 month service, next month . Enjoy 😉

Only issue I had was the chasing tension was way to tight from the factory/dealership. In range (on the loose side), adjusted the sensor and a good lube completely changed the quickshifter. I hated it the 1st thousand miles, then did the above and loved it. 2-5 were seamless, when rpm’s were above 3k.

Thanks , at the moment even above 4000 revs 1-2, 2-3 is not fabulous! At times I don't trust it and am expecting a false neutral and the ensuing brown underpants as you have no engine braking as you steam towards the corner!! is exciting though. On a serious note it may be it just needs calibrating.

I picked up a 22 890R a month ago. I haven't even got to the break in service yet, but I did have a few problems with the gearbox and quick shifter. It will occasionally shift into a false neutral especially while using the quick shifter. I just installed a Factory Pro shift arm and spring which replaces the standard roller bushing with a ceramic bearing. I expect that to be a major improvement. 1st-2nd shift on really any bike is pretty rough while using a quick shifter. I only use the QS in first while starting from the grid during a race.

Did the Factory Pro shift kit help yours? I’m about to try that next. Already realigned the shift shaft and replaced the factory rearsets with their aftermarket version; both helped, but neither eliminated the problem. The gearbox just has such an inconsistent feel to it and I’ve tried riding around the issue for 2.5 years. Dealer has reprogrammed and even had KTM North America assist them. I have a 2022 890 Adventure. My initial issue was a 5 to 6 false neutral hit twice under power using the quick shifter. My more recent is neutral to 1st where it indicates 1st yet as I pull away goes straight to second. It doesn’t always give a positive clunk for 1st instead seeming to be as if the selector drum hasn’t rotated fully. I suspect this to be the issue on the 5th to 6th problem. I do think it’s a poor qs system , the triumph 765 I rode had a qs that was light years ahead of the Ktms one. it’s all based on a magnet system which I think doesn’t quite cut it ….guess it’s the cheaper option.

I noticed with my QS that if you are hesitant from 1st -2nd because of the jump in ratios 2nd-3rd has a little bit of a cough most times but again if I'm slightly hesitant probably because the bikes so bloody fast and any members of the constabulary watching would be disappointed in me disappearing into the distance at a great rate of knots. I still love gassing it though 😆 I reckon it might improve with a smaller Countershaft sprocket 1 tooth = 3 on the rear sprocket my 790R Adventure bike loved the smaller sprocket in my opinion it didn't carry top gear that well where as the 890R Duke does everything better FYI I didn't activate the QS at all on the ADV Bike the gearbox wasn't as good as the 890R

Quick shifter is not good 1-2nd and more than once when selecting the next gear up , generally 2-3rd it gives a lurch back and forward and doesn’t engage . I’ve tried being gentle and kicking the gear pedal but neither results in a better method . Chain adjustment also seems important. I reversed the gear leaver, 1up and the rest down so I can 'punch it' with my foot. It will shift with angry foot action but it's disheartening when I watch raw sound video's of other bikes when you can hear their quickshifter and blipper are clearly working properly. Took my bike to a rolling road to see if it could be replicated, 1st run in 6th to warm the bike and 2nd run guy shat himself as he thought it would break free and wouldn't continue as it was so abrupt Why on earth KTM decided to not use a pressure sensor type system for the quickshifter. I love the bike otherwise) is it not possible to install an aftermarket system and work around the factory unit?

my 890 r is 2020 model, 1st to 2nd is extremely unpleasent, even when I'm almost full throllte and in high revs, and I have had a few times that I didnt use a strong enough force to change the gear (stuck in 1st but triggered the quick shifter) and the bike cut the ignition for a second and the power comes back shortly after that, that violent push caught me off guard and almost send me to the side of the road. personaly speaking I find that using different oil helped(not much) I'm currently running motul 7100 in my 890, the gear change is more clear than the stock motorex oil, and easier to find netural, but it doesn't help much with the quick shifter problem. my previous bike was a 2017 gsxr1000, and the quick shifter on that bike is completely different, what I think is on most bikes the quick shifter is pressure sensitive, all of them has some what a pretravel, that allows the gearbox to prepare for a gear change, but the duke is only using magnets(Hall effect sensor) which is really a on off switch, it only knows the positions of the shifter but not how hard you're actually pressing the lever, to me i think KTM is just trying to cut cost by fitting all their dukes with cheaper Hall effect sensor style quick shifter, then later charge you money for unlocking this features through buying the tech pak.

@HahrtDood yes my mate bought the 2021 MT09SP, the bike is a lot smooth than the last gen mt09, especially the quickshifter, not quick smooth as liter bikes but close enough to what I consider refine.

Don’t use the quick shifter under 3000 rpm…..when your using it don’t let off the gas…..don’t let off the gas….and you’ll be fine….also I herd if you start the bike and let it run for 15min don’t do anything come back and it see if that helps
