Vivian Mary Hartley (November 5, 1913 - July 8, 1967) was a British actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her definitive performances as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) and Blanche DuBois in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), a role she had also played on stage in London's West End in 1949. Although her career had periods of inactivity, in 1999 the American Film Institute ranked Leigh as the 16th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.
After completing her drama school education, Leigh appeared in small roles in four films in 1935 and progressed to the role of heroine in Fire Over England (1937). Lauded for her beauty, Leigh felt that her physical attributes sometimes prevented her from being taken seriously as an actress. Despite her fame as a screen actress, Leigh was primarily a stage performer. During her 30-year career, she played roles ranging from the heroines of Noël Coward and George Bernard Shaw comedies to classic Shakespearean characters such as Ophelia, Cleopatra, Juliet and Lady Macbeth. Later in life, she performed as a character actress in a few films.
At the time, the public strongly identified Leigh with her second husband, Laurence Olivier, who was her spouse from 1940 to 1960. Leigh and Olivier starred together in many stage productions, with Olivier often directing, and in three films. She earned a reputation for being difficult to work with and for much of her adult life, she had bipolar disorder. In 1944, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and continued to battle it throughout her life. In the spring of 1967, she suffered a recurrent bout of the disease that led her to death in July of the same year, when she was trying to make her way to the bathroom and her lung filled with liquid made her collapsed. She was 53 years old. Leigh was regarded as one of the most beautiful actresses of her era and her directors emphasised this in most of her films.

Gone with the wind has been my favorite movie since I was 6 years old. She blew me away as Scarlett. My female hero. Always hoped I'd grow up to be a woman like that, ended up more like Melanie, never wanting to hurt feelings😁 deep down, I got Scarlett in me!

Maybe because he was the only boy around that wasn't trying to be with her, he had been betrothed to someone else, so different from her. I really don't know why, especially when rhett was there, love his character too.

It is funny that 3 of the four main characters in Gone with the Wind were British. The lovely Olivia De Havilland died at the grand age of 104 in 2020. Leslie Howard died in WW2 aged 50 in 1943. He decided that he must fight for his country. A brave man.

Lovely woman ! I find it heartbreaking that she suffered from bipolar disorder especially in a time where there were only rudimentary and frightening treatments ! She had amazing range in her acting and was more resilient than she has ever been given credit for ! Dear Vivian !

I agree. Paulette Goddard was very good but Vivien really brought the tempestuous, selfish, bratty immaturity that makes Scarlett so much fun to watch. She's like a hurricane in that character, a force of nature, and you can't take your eyes off of her. 🙂

Everything on these stars today are fake. Stars of yesteryear have naturally beautiful features . Also these poor guys today get married to these girls today with all these cosmetic things done to themselves , than they have a baby and that poor baby comes out looking like the real mother .Poor thing!😩

The difference between them and the stars of today is not in "natural beauty" but in the fact that they were all different and with much more personality. Liz Taylor was very beautiful and so Vivien Leigh.

She had an incredibly sweet and beautiful face, the fine features, the wonderful blue eyes, the full dark hair. Her figure was also great. May Liz Taylor have been a breathtaking Cleopatra, Vivien Leigh was more. Beside beauty there was something youthful, slender and enchanting about her. She was like a fairy with wonderful sparkling eyes. Gone with the wind.... an uncomparable movie. Everyone would have liked to see a man like Clark Gable at her side in real life. Lawrence Olivier, a vain and allegedly bisexual man probably didn't appreciate her as a woman as she would have deserved it. A life full of tragedy. Her daughter has hardly any resemblance with this exceptional mother. Well, that happens. Hopefully she didn't regret that too deeply. Thanks for the collection of photographs of this outstanding actress.

Why do I have the feeling that David O Selznick handed some casting director pictures of Vivien as a young child and told him to find a little girl who looked like that? And lo and behold, he found little Cammie King. Remarkable resemblance!

She was stunningly beautiful even in middle age in "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" the screen adaptation of the Tennessee Williams' adaptation of the novella of the same name. It was remade with what's her name, but she wasn't good looking even when she was young.

It’s not surprising she aged quick. She had untreated mental illness, smoked and drank alcohol a lot. All these took a toll on her body.

We (men) are struck by female beauty. And in a life of seasons, the later ones are tougher for women than men for that reason. But in her youth, she was a lovely child and later, a rare beauty and exceptional actress.

@@maya_jones3411 I thought exactly the same! Smoking is one of the worst things to age you as it destroys every organ in the body pretty much and Vivien smoked a hell of a lot like you say! Yes she suffered terribly with the bi polar and also recurrent tuberculosis too. Definitely no wonder she aged quickly bless her! She was the most beautiful woman ever though!

I saw that at 37. She changed quite significantly, bounced back a few times but taken way too soon, a great loss indeed, she looked very happy with Olivier.
