    Just to help US buyers of the B&W Kaya 25, the British stuff was always insular and at $11,000 a pair, we're looking for an amplifier near $5500, so what has the designer intended? Well, not NAD, you know Steve used a NAD, but they're not hi-End and not British. NAD is far eastern, the first owner was British, but NAD was an outsourced bargain product, 'cheap' is the word. Musical Fidelity M6s PRE + M6s PRX is going to be nearer the mark. The British scene is very specialist and to get the best you'll need an all British speaker/amplifier and usually Marantz inputs at the that price point.

Where do you buy your shirts and glasses,(love the glasses)? If speaker wire is so important why are the internals of speakers wired with ordinary small gauge copper with Crimp connections? You know, questions on any thing? ☮Peace

    Great review! I heard the S12 at a local audio show last year. They played Lie Still Little Bottle by They Might be Giants, and that really showcased their exhilarating presence and breathtaking speed. The messy little crescendo in the middle followed by the hard piano chord - those little drivers damn near blew our hair back. Very impressive, very clear. Not the type of sound I was after, but for what they were - incredibly nice. Would have loved to hear these big brothers.

    I never noticed the David Peace novel on your shelves before. Have you read his Red Riding quartet? Absolutely astounding books. There is also a trilogy of films made from them. B&W was interesting at the time they produced the Nautilus, which, if I remember correctly, was related to the research which went on to produce the Pod series of speakers, Minipod, Micropod and, I think, various others down the years.

    Yeah ... but why has Steve recommended the Kubala Temptation speaker cable? Well, because it's only $600 a meter and it's a halfway house copper silver alloy bridge to reach the British elite's choice of a solid silver conductor Atlas brand cable for the Vivid Audio Kaya 25. So you say, why would the Red Riding Quartet book or copper silver alloy cable not be included? Well listen, the British hi-End stuff is not Brooklyn for starters. That's the first stumbling block that says that we should just forget all about the British, Vivid Audio stuff. Why is Steve so loyal to these people? Joe Kubala of Kubala Sosna is you know all very well, but his cable is aimed at an Italian speaker (Brooklyn right?) and Greek electronics, so it's all Europe okay? No ... UNDERSTAND British stuff is INSULAR, it isn't Greek, it's not Italian, it's not Brooklyn. The Italian speakers have a Frequency Response that suits copper/ silver alloy but the Vivid Audio Kaya 25 doesn't suit a copper substitute for the silver in the genuine matching Atlas brand cable. Basically, you know, Steve likes the American Kubala Sosna, but these are not for British ears, they're a favor to a pal.

    This is a 2-way box speaker. Very common for 2-way box speakers to be specified as having a nominal 8 ohm impedance. Not sure why you find this is rare. Maybe it's a US thing? I'm in Europe. (Btw an 8ohm, 85db/2.83V at 1m speaker will supposedly sound as loud, when fed 1 watt, as a 4ohm 88db/2.83V speaker...of course all of this is nominal).

  • @keplermission

    @keplermission

    Жыл бұрын

    Not a box. 6 ohm is more usual in the US and UK but in Europe, we see 5 ohm in Norway or 4 ohm in other places. 8 ohm is seen less often as it develops less power. The BBC LS3/5A was 15 ohm and later 11 ohm. The idea of "1 watt" is affected by other factors, the power bandwidth and the ability to handle peaks without clipping. You know, 'don't teach your granny to suck eggs?'

  • @razisn

    @razisn

    Жыл бұрын

    @@keplermission What are you mumbling about? You are either wrong or not making sense in virtually everything you say here. I can point you to a zillion specified as 8 ohm nominal 2-way box speakers starting with the well known LS50, continuing with the Focals, the ProAcs and any number of other brands and models. Of course it is a box speaker. If a speaker is not open baffle or panel or full horn, it is a box speaker. Your sentence about 'the idea of 1 watt' makes no sense whatsoever. Nor the one about 8 ohm 'developing less power'. The only correct thing you said was about the LS3/5A..

     @Ryan Schipp IIRC you were running down the Kaya S12s when Steve reviewed them on this channel not long ago. Okay, we get it, you have a thing against Vivids. But here's the thing- every audio purchase, including speakers, requires compromises- there are a no. of very expensive speakers that do extremely well at 50hz and above but are obviously not full-range speakers. And measuring speaker value by its weight is- not a particularly great metric. Vivids may be lame in your opinion, but audiophiles who have many other choices consistently (though like any other product, not universally) rave about them. And as for the numbers they move in the US- hardly any multi-thousand dollar high-end speaker models sell more than a handful of units a year, as there are still dozens or possibly hundreds of models at 10K or above, much less 5K, and if you haven't noticed, when that's divided up among the relatively small percentage of the US population spending many thousands per speaker pair in a given year- well, what would you expect? If you think all high-end speakers are lame, that's one thing, but if you accept the premise of spending this kind of money, well, Vivid makes very competitive, highly-regarded speakers at their price points. You're not speaking thoughtfully about these issues. We're all entitled to our biases, but many of us don't realize that we have them.

    there is absolutely nothing special about this speaker, it still uses heavy metal drive units, that still posses ringing frequencies that still have to be tamed and damped down. This means they don't possess the natural dynamic sound quality of a pair ATC ASL 3 way active monitors where the drive units dont have to be damped down because they are inherently made of self damped materials. The vivid does not produce natural sounds of instruments like the 3 way ATC SCM ASL 3 WAY ACTIVE monitors do. But obviously your not going to tell the real truth like it really is are you . There is absolutely nothing high end about this speaker, nor is it's sound signature . Talking about the vivid's design and sound, it is at best a lifestyle speaker, with a lifestyle sound, which means that it possess an unnatural sound signature . There is nothing natural about the way this speaker actually sounds. There you have it from me folks, the real unvarnished truth . One more thing, metal drive unit KEFS also does not posses natural sound capabilitive qualities either. People should really stop lying about speakers sound quality abilities that just are not real or true to real life sounds .
