She is both gorgeous and a phenomenal coloratura. Listen to the applause. That crowd have been drawn to their feet by her amazing singing.

I never thought someone could one day equal or surpass Cecilia Bartoli's agility in this aria, but Vivica has!!! She's amazing!

Many if not all singers have their 'mannerisms'. Bartoli's got her facial expressions, Sills had her lil bounce, Sutherland had 'the claw', and so on. To me these little indivitualities made the artist that much more individual.

@guiradobrasil I had exactly the same thought! I am awed by Genaux's virtuosity.

That is a flatly silly comment. She hits and holds the notes, phrases beautifully in high coloratura, and without the video you would not know quite how extensive her whole musculature is involved in making that sound. It's hardly a SlimLift or set of falsies: there is nothing fake about the SOUND, the beautiful music she produces. Furthermore, there are thousands of listeners, highy trained pro and amateur lovers of music alike, who solidly disagree, and buy tickets to her shows and her CD's.

I am shocked that no one is commenting on how much her jaw and her lips vibrate like crazy!! i mean don't get me wrong, her coloratura is absolutely sick and obviously has impeccable technique... but man her jaw vibrates like i've never seen before! i think it effects her top notes, as great as they are, it's hindered by her jaw movement! idk it's just amazing to me! she is awesome though! i don't wanna give the impression that i don't appreciate her immense skill!

It is quite loose, but it's not the force of breath pushing the lips: it's muscle control-- CONTROL being the key word. It is full coordination of throat, neck, jaw, lungs & diaphragm, tongue and mouth, etc. Notice the difference in the high B at 6:42-43 and the duplicate phrase ast 6:53. She hits slightly flat the first time, but you can see the full Muscle control as she uses her whole face to hit and shape the note when it recurrs.

Are these handful of "glaring technical errors" in her musical production or her singing technique? I ask, because the music sounds fabulous, but the issues with her buccal tension I agree with.

If it were that many “glaring technical errors” she would not be singing this aria. Something older singers don’t realize- there is one technique, sure. But the variations are plentiful…

@@chaserooface the fact that since I made that comment 11 years ago Ms Genaux has addressed and done great service in correcting this issue and several other aspects of her voice (which I have always loved, by the way, and still do) does not bode well for your comment. Technique is technique. Buccal tension in such levels to produce consistent, involuntary movent is flawed technique in any caliber of singer. Facts are just facts.

@@CountertenorJ it’s still phenomenal. Hindsight’s 20/20. Sure, it’s great when singers publicly grow and learn about their own voice- but here, I can’t see if it’s constructive criticism for the younger generation, or douchies saying “LOOK WHAT I KNOW.” I can think of many singers who’ve had to make massive strides with their vocal technique. Remember, this is celebrating Rossini and appeasing audiences too- it’s not all about teaching a younger generation proper technique. This singular performance in time rivals Bartoli and the crowd lost their gd minds.

@@chaserooface for years I've provided vocal pedagogy insight on numerous videos, not to be "douchie" but to demystify the process of singing. Singing is a science with objective metrics in skill levels. How one uses that science is what makes it art. Pointing out flaws in technique does not take away from artistry. It simply shows where room for more artistry, via enhanced skill can be made.

0:43 - 4:26 - 5:50 CENERENTOLA Nacqui all'affanno e al pianto. Soffrì tacendo il core; ma per soave incanto, dell'età mia nel fiore, come un baleno rapido la sorte mia cangiò. (a don Magnifico e sorelle) No, no! Tergete il ciglio; perché tremar, perché? A questo sen volate; figlia, sorella, amica: tutto trovate in me. Padre... sposo... amico... Oh, istante!

but she is not doing the coloratura with the lips, her lips move with the coloratura!! you get what i mean? no way she could sing like that using only her mouth

@xbcg9489x I've watched several of [her] videos just for that reason, it's not so much her jaw as an utterly unique way of shaping and controlling her notes with her Lips-- I've never ever seen anything like it. The results speak for themselves, however she discovered that technique, it's truly Hers, and works beautifully.

I juste discovered Vivica Genaux, and I love her voice. thanks for the video... nevertheless, what's the problem with the flute at 4:26??? is (s)he playing with a piece of wood or what? It's ruining the beginning of the aria.

@eukleides2 i don't think this is anything to be shocked about. As someone who's studied voice for several years (& is a coloratura), jaw tension is a huge obstacle!! i brought it up bc that's a dangerous technique to be teaching someone! her sustained notes are sometimes unstable bc of her jaw tension, so i wouldnt go around saying that her technique is flawless. of course, as a coloratura, your jaw is necessary & again, i think she's amazing!! But i'm shocked that shes done well with this.
