Viva La Vida - The Petersens (LIVE)

You guys loved "The Scientist" cover we did so much we decided to do another Coldplay song! It's fun taking an intricate song with this many moving parts and translating it to our acoustic instruments. Emmett arranged "Viva La Vida" and, once again, did a fantastic job.

►LYRICS - Viva La Vida
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead, long live the king!
One minute I held the keys
Next the walls were closed on me
An' I discovered that m' castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
There was the wicked an' wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
The shattered windows and the sound of drums
The people couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Uh, who would ever wanna be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oa woah ohhh oh [x4]
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'
Roman cavalry choirs are singin'
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

@@jonathandaniel7424 I disagree that the song is about a specific historical fact like the French Revolution. The only reference is the album cover which depicts the painting "Freedom leading the people" by the French painter Eugène Delacroix, painted on the occasion of the Parisian struggle against King Charles X, brother of Louis XVI. But the whole text of the song speaks of a generic king, not better defined, who lived in an older age and with many biblical references. In fact I think Chris Martin wanted to talk about a person blinded by power who, once he has lost everything he had, realizes that he has neglected the important things - including values - in life.

The Petersens sound fantastic but if you aren't watching their facial expressions you are missing half the fun. Starting with Ellen, she looks like she is floating in the music -- like she is enjoying listening to the performance (while she is playing in it) as much as any fan in the audience. She definitely loves what she is doing. Katie is a bit more serious and cerebral in her performance and her performance is flawless . And Julianne is totally comic relief -- I can't help but laugh as I watch her face. I swear she is going to break out laughing. Look at her eyes and facial expressions during the ooo-waaa (3:00-3:15). She almost got Emmett to crack up. They must have a ton of fun "working" together.

More rehearsal coverage, please, it does many things, one of which is showcasing how much work it takes to have such smooth performances. You could in fact video a song from first idea through rehearsal to finished product, so fans could get a look in the engine room.

This would actually be an interesting idea for you to explore. I have watched a few of your "travelogue" videos, and they are interesting. A "Start-to-Finish" video would be a great educational tool. You would also likely reach some new people who haven't discovered your group yet.

Brilliant interpretation. But when have they ever done a bad one? My Son in law was a top 20 winner at the Bass Pro tournament in Maryland, and I mentioned how glad I was that The Petersens got that gig, and he commented on how good they were, even though he was not an actual audience member! I continue to be fascinated by their harmonies without the aid of in-ear monitors. And man, with that smile and those eyes, Katie could convince anyone to play in the key of Z! 😊

Brilliant job on a difficult song. It looks very complicated to play and I love watching Mom on the bass; the concentration is obvious but she does the job superbly because bowing is a very different skill from pizzicato.

Well I got to say this is the best song Emmett has done in my opinion and the whole band was excellent but there is something about the violin in this song accompanying the dobro, excellent , beautifully put together, oh, I can't say enough good about it.
