Vitamin D and MS - Does it Help?

Do people with low levels of vitamin D seem to be at higher risk of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and do people with MS that have low levels of vitamin D seem to have worse outcomes?
In this video I share what I found in the studies about vitamin D and MS and also some other health conditions that may be affected by our vitamin D levels.

    Do you take vitamin D?

Many factors affect absorption. Increasing the dose may not help if you’re not taking/eating vitamin K, magnesium, and zinc. Getting older, hormone level changes, stress and other comorbidities to name a few can affect vitamin D absorption. We are not just our MS. We are a full spectrum human. We are individuals on a journey to our own wellness. Everyday our health is influenced by our mood, activity level, hydration, sleep etc. Be your own advocate. Influencing factors may reduce efficacy of what used to work. Continuously pursue other options for greater health. Find your joy It’s a daily work in progress🌈🦋☀️

I don't have MS but long ago our primary care doc recommended we take Vitamin D for general health. In the past 3 years we also started taking a brand of Vitamin D that contains Vitamin K. Better together I think, like so many vitamins.

That's why I have my own eyes on my labs. Also, I noticed that even though my primary takes labs often, he does not run the same things all the time so I make requests. Even in between his cycles, I sometimes make requests for my labs to be run and with a minimum of certain things I am tracking. I have a new diagnosis of MS but been biohacking and paying attention to my bloodwork for many years now and noticed that when they say everything is normal, that does NOT mean optimal. In fact, it turns out normal is an average range of what that specific lab sees which in many cases for D and some others is NOT at all optimal. As people become more and more deficient, the normal range drops. Don't strive for normal 😅. Strive for fantastic!

after diagnosis, I doubled the intake of my B12 (taken for many year due to being a lifelong vegetarian), and also began taking vitamin D. I usually only took Vitamin D during the fall and winter, but, on the advice of my neurologist started taking 1000iu per day. My levels were considered normal, but he suggested to take this to help stave off some other problems that can occur in MS patients. Thank you for another fact filled and informative video.

I tried the Coimbra Vit D protocol with a certified practitioner. It did absolutely nothing for me. It's an important hormone and I still take it daily, but I think with MS, it's not the be all end all.

I have also read that the angle of the sun affects our vitamin D absorption. If your shadow is equal to or shorter than your body then you can absorb it. If it is longer then you can't. So, standing in the snow naked at certain times of the year isnt going to help anyway. This could be wrong - I've just read it several times.

Oh interesting! It makes total sense. The more direct the sun, the better absorption.

Under advice of my neurologist, I take 4,000 units of D3 daily in spray form 🙂 I’m looking forward to hearing more about B12 - I’m aware of confusion about the different tests, whether it is total or active, or something along those lines 🙂

Due to severe pain and falling, I have not been able to take my little dogs outside anymore for the last few years. They use potty pads inside. I just realized a couple weeks ago I have been depriving them from vitamin D so now I am supplementing them too. I feel horrible they went so long. I have been taking high quality D3 supplements for a very long time and I'm tested regularly and keep an eye on it myself. Most people are deficient l, at least really low. I am newly diagnosed with MS but supplement this way longer because of ALL the reasons we need it. To start, all over immune system and mental well-being.

Currently undergoing Mavenclad treatment and supplementing with 100,000 IU monthly, but my vitamin D level remains at 26 ng. I exercise a lot and spend more than 15 minutes in the sun every day. I'll keep exploring options. Many thanks! Greetings from Argentina.

Magnesium is needed for vitamin D3 to be bioavailable. It also needs to be taken with fatty foods. If your vitamin D is not increasing with supplementation then you need to add Magnesium Citrate 200-400 mg nightly to the regimen

I think last year I started taking 1,000 IUD (one pill of Vit D), then this year my doctor prescribed 10,000 IUD one pill a week of Vit D and B12 injections once a month. my blood work is monitored regularly and the DMT is working (teriflunomide) For the most part my symptoms have been low or zero. Disability income support has been a challenge but when possible I do increase health diet options.

I do not have MS, but I am a vegan. Taking vitamin B-12 is a must: 1000 mcg once a week. For vitamin D, I take 4000 IU per day all winter and 2000 IU per day during the summer. My vitamin blood level is usually in the high 30's to 40. My interest in MS is because my best friend has MS for the past 20 years. I wonder if men suffer greater with MS than women. You are probably familiar with Dr. Terry Wahl. Great content.

I have been exploring risk factors for autoimmunity/inflammatory brain diseases Parkinson's, MS, and Alzheimer's. All data is limited being that vitamin D does not have a large price tag to make it profitable to study. The nuances have not been figured out. Its better to take it for all over health especially when you don't get the sun. A definitive study with large populations is still elusive.
