Vitamin A and mystery pneumonia

Vitamin A is needed for immunity and is cheap
Vitamin A (which is retinol) and immunity
WHO report
www.who.int/emergencies/disea...
www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamin...
Vitamin A has several important functions
helping natural defence against illness and infection (immune system) work properly
helping vision in dim light
keeping skin and the lining of some parts of the body, such as the nose, healthy
Good sources of vitamin A
Good sources of vitamin A (retinol) include:
cheese
eggs
oily fish
fortified low-fat spreads
milk and yoghurt
liver and liver pâté
If you're pregnant you should avoid eating liver or liver products, (NHS, 2023)
Excess vitamin A is toxic.
Vitamin A deficiency
www.who.int/data/nutrition/nl...
What are the consequences and implications?
Night blindness is one of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency.
In its more severe forms, vitamin A deficiency contributes to blindness by making the cornea very dry, thus damaging the retina and cornea.
An estimated 250 000-500 000 children who are vitamin A-deficient become blind every year,
and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight.
World’s leading preventable cause of childhood blindness.
Deficiency of vitamin A is associated with significant morbidity and mortality from common childhood infections,
Vitamin A deficiency also contributes to maternal mortality and other poor outcomes of pregnancy and lactation.
It also diminishes the ability to fight infections.
Even mild, subclinical deficiency can be a problem, because it may increase children's risk for respiratory and diarrhoeal infections,
decrease growth rates,
slow bone development and decrease the likelihood of survival from serious illness.
Beta carotene
Red-orange pigment, in plants and fruits,
especially carrots and colourful vegetables.
The body converts beta carotene into vitamin A
The advantage of dietary beta carotene is that the body only converts as much as it needs.
Healthy antioxidant
May prevent cognitive decline
jamanetwork.com/journals/jama...
May help lung function
thorax.bmj.com/content/61/4/320
Both may be due to preventing oxidative stress
www.medicalnewstoday.com/arti...
Foods rich in beta carotene:
Apricots, Asparagus, Broccoli, Carrots, Chives, Dandelion leaves, Grapefruit, (Chilli powder, oregano, paprika, parsley), Kale,
Onions, Peas, Peppers, Plums, Pumpkin, Spinach, Squash, Sweet potatoes.
Role of Vitamin A in the Immune System
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Needed for mucous membrane innate immunity (respiratory and GI)
Essential for the normal function of many immune cells such as T lymphocytes
Vitamin A deficiency is associated with severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children
kzread.info?even...
Beijing, Feb, 2020
N = 122 children, (0 - 15)
52 sMPP
Severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
70 nsMPP
Non-severe Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia
Serum levels of vitamins A, D, and E were measured and compared, and correlated with nsMPP and sMPP.
Results
The age was older in the sMPP samples than that in the nsMPP samples.
(7.12 vs. 4.01)
So older children suffered more severe infections.
Vitamin A deficiency was present in both the nsMPP and sMPP samples.
Vitamin A levels were significantly lower in the sMPP serum than that in the nsMPP serum.
(0.15 vs. 0.19)
Vitamin A deficiency was defined
Deficiency, less than 0.2 mg/L,
Subclinical vitamin A deficiency, 0.2-0.3 mg/L
Normal vitamin A level by 0.3-0.7 mg/L.
So, children with lower vitamin A levels suffered more severe infections.
Vitamins E and D levels were also lower in sMPP children
Vitamin E (7.4 vs. 8.22)
Vitamin D (23.08 vs. 32.07)
Both sMPP and nsMPP did not show a deficiency of vitamins E and D.
Vitamin A deficiency OR 0.001 - 0.334, (P=0.009) associated with sMPP
Incidence of vitamin A deficiency
Vitamin A deficiency in under 6 years was 85% of children
Vitamin A deficiency in over 6 years was 62.5% of children
Vitamin A supplementation could reduce the incidence of sMPP.
Conclusions
Vitamin A deficiency is associated with sMPP and more likely present in the younger sMPP children.
Therefore, it is important to monitor and supplement vitamin A in Mycoplasma pneumonia patients.

Dr John Campbell has made some big dangerous mistakes and is attempting to backpedal away from them but he remains part of the problem and those who “trust” him will also remain part of the problem. It is commendable that he is pointing out the failures of our politicians to act in the interest of their electors and employees, wrt the jabs, but with this chatter about new “infection” he is continuing to support their anti-people narrative. Northern China has just undergone massive flooding largely caused by the ineptitude of politicians. When things like this happen people get sick. 2+2=4 is now beyond the abilities of our news agencies and original thought is beyond those of Dr John, who mostly just repeats what they say.

It’s about time our children’s education - worldwide - included them being schooled in the importance of nutrition and the roles vitamins and minerals have in their health and wellbeing. They should also be taught which foods provide these nutrients and what happens to their bodies when there are deficiencies. To me this is more important than all the other subjects because without our health we have nothing. We cannot expect guidance from their parents because probably 95% don’t have a clue about adequate nutrition.

Today in most modern countries we have access to fruits and vegatebles year round due to international trade so our diets are much better than great grandmas root cellar with potatoes, cabbage and beets. Older breeds of chickens did not lay much in winter. I live in northern US because my chickens can not forage through a foot or two of snow, in the winter I feed 18% protein organic non gmo, in summer 16% because they run around eating bugs and fresh greens. Their egg production drops a bit during change of seasons and if they molt. I do not supplement the natural daylight but I do heat to a minimum of 20 degrees f. I have broody hens who keep eggs from freezing. If you do not have access to healthy foods I think supplementing is great. I can not remember even a cold in the last 53 years.

If it's chest infection, I once fixed my own *walking pneumonia* with lots of finely chopped WHITE onion, raw. Add it to your soup, stews just before serving. The sulphur in the raw white onion is very powerful. This was after three rounds of antibiotics that did nothing to help! In later years, the power of raw onion was confirmed for me while speaking with a former Vietnam era paramedic. The paramedics had to know how to help soldiers even if all their medical kit was damaged/lost in battle.

@@ZionistJew-oj1bo Am not a doctor, am only speaking from personal experience re what has worked for me. It really depends on what you get from your diet and your weight as vitamin doses should be relative to your personal health / circumstances. With Vit A 1.3mg is roughly 2,363 IU, the reason I don't advocate exceeding 10,000 IU vit A is that this is usually roughly equal to 3,000 retinol equivalents which according to Australian health authorities can cause birth defects in pregnant mothers, so I am not advocating 10,000 IU Vit A, just saying best not to exceed it. Generally most people get a little Vit A in their multi vitamin, if you do it probably won't hurt to take another 5,000 IU in a Vit A supplement as long as the total works out less than 10,000 IU (5.5mg), personally I get roughly 6,000 IU vit A from supplements which seems to suit me fine (I am a 90kg male in my 40s). I also take 10,000 IU D3 (250mcg) along with 400mcg K2 (but I live in Australia and catch some sun most days)... if you are going to supplement with D3, this kinda ratio D3 to K2 is quite common in combined supplements which is the only reason I use it, frankly medical advice on what the real ratio should be between K2 and D3 is very inconsistent. Important to remember, these are all fat soluble vitamins so if you have a healthy / low fat diet having them at the same time as something with some fat is a good idea my preference is for a little yoghurt or melted cheese on something (not low fat versions of either).

@@IronicAsAlwaysyou do know you're demonstrating extreme ignorance of nutrition don't you?? We need animal sourced nutrients. Plants are low level, missing many nutrients essential to human health, those it does have are wrong format, poorly converted, not bioavailable. A study in the UK showed nearly 50% of those tested could NOT convert betacarotene to vitamin A. That means up to 50% of vegans will be vitamin A deficient. Do the research - look up recommended daily intake of any nutrient, search the level in a supposedly 'good' plant based source, look up bioavailability of that plant based source. Calculate the level of that nutrient in your diet after factoring in bioavailability.
