Vital Transformation (live) - The Mahavishnu Experience
Музыка
Hey all!
Now that I'm in my third year at Humber College, much of my time is spent recording and performing with different groups. This is an ensemble I put together with some friends to cover and experiment with the music of the 70s fusion group "Mahavishnu Orchestra". It's very challenging music to play, as it's a mixture of jazz harmony with rock tone and Indian rhythms.
This is a tune off of their debut album "The Inner Mounting Flame", and it's one of their signature songs. The whole tune is in 9/8 time signature (wooo!).
The band is as follows:
Aline Homzy - Violin
Felipe Debastos - Guitar
Andrew Kesler - Keys
Xero FG - Bass
Tristan Henderson - Drums
You can download high-quality mp3s of our entire set for FREE from this link: www.filedropper.com/showdownlo...
This is footage from our set at Humber College on Dec. 2/10. It was filmed by my sister Sarah. The audio was edited by Tristan (with pointless suggestions by myself) and I edited the video. Sorry that the colours and brightness are all screwed up, my camera doesn't handle stage lights well :S
Thanks for watching. Feel free to comment, rate and subscribe. Unfortunately, all of my videos are completely different, so if you're looking for continuity, I'm not your man. However, I try and put forth the best product possible, whether it be various styles of music, or playing different instruments.

Drummer murdered this. Those hi hats are the low key mvp of his drum sound. Awesomeness.
Wtf where this awesome drummer came from? So precisely hits that’s amazing
The best cover I have ever seen of this tune. You guys got it right, no easy thing.

Andrew Kesler I saw three concerts with the original lineup. Used to play some of the cuts in a college band in the 70's (only the drummer could really nail it, a Berklee guy) so I get the lot of practice thing. You guys play it better than we ever did. Thanks for putting in the work to honor that really great material.

Wow, by far the best cover I've seen of any Mahavishnu Orchestra song.

Well it is soooo refreshing to see a drummer on a 4 piece creating art instead of a redundant circus show on a 9 piece. Great job brother, solid as concrete and super inspiring!
Really amazing! I was a fan of Mahavishnu Orchestra in the seventies and i spent a lot of time trying to play this incredible stuff. I know it very well and so i can say: WELL DONE guys!

The main thing to get right when playing Mahavishnu stuff is the intensity. I have only ever “tried” to play along to the recordings. This is how I would want to play it, if I could. Wonderful.
Nicely done:) You guys looked so comfortable playing this piece. 99% of people on youtube who attempt MO music (even the ones who are "teaching parts") look like they're studying for a final..they're so rigid in their attempts..reading from music stands on stage etc. You guys made this your own and with great feel. And if you don't have a great drummer for these feats, then hang up your instruments..this guy is smooth and carries the technical weight of the band flawlessly. Thumbs up..
Easily the best mahavishnu cover I've ever heard! That ending is incredible too!
WOW!!! I usually loathe this kind of things, but this is AMAZING! This band is GREAT!
This is seriously amazing! Killer cover of this tune! Drums sounds tasty!
great team work, all members are amazing and the arrangement is brilliant. Really, worth a project and a record! Bravo, guys!
Andrew, this is just magnificent! One of the best renditions of this truly vital Mahavishnu tune I have ever encountered. Thank you!
Your drummer nailed it!
Great job by everyone, but the drummer is the one who really stands out for me. Great talent there!

Man, I'm blown away. such talented musicians on that stage.
I love Fusion music. You guys really have a great thing going on, here. :D
Impressive to replicate the mighty power of Billy Cobham, the only man to have bested Godzilla in bare hand combat.
Just incredible
Love it!

Dude, that was freakin tasty. I love these vids man, keep it up! From one music student to another :)
wow, very nice job guys. It's so rare to see a college band not to ruin the song they cover. impressive
great version!
really great cover. very faithful to the original idea
I like this drummer.
Oh my god, if I could play like this one day... Or hear you guys live... What an incredible rendition of an incredible song. You have a solid group up there with you - Tristan's a monster. Safe to say you've got a new fan... keep up the fantastic playing!
BRAVO !!!!!
Freakin Amazing!

FINALLY someone that plays the tom fills on the intro.
BRAVO!!
Loved your improv. Polytonality FTW !

Very nice.
You play better this song then Mahavishnu Orchestra.. Perfect!!
awesome
really very good
Excellent
Nice original touches on the arrangement.
Drummer is outstanding!
Man... That drumer is talented!!!
🤩
god damn u guys are godly
daaaayyyyum
Kudos.
Indeed.
Tristin truly channeling Billy. Best I’ve seen to come close to Cobham on this insane song.
nice!
Awesome;-)
Very #Impressive!
I commend this group for its purpose. Mahavishnu is not an easy band to play tribute to. The level of musicianship required must be high. I think this group does an admirable job and this comes from a great fan of the original band. My suggestion going forward is to offer a tribute to all the great fusion bands of that period. That way the band can open up to putting its own stamp on the genre.
that was fucking epic! really well achieved..
Andrew: any chance of you posting the mp3's again? Really enjoyed this.
Beautiful . I enjoyed it . Can you do Marbles next ? Another John McLaughlin composition . I'd love to hear yous play it ! GOD bless you .
This is pretty fucking good. And the drummer is soooooo close
bien !!!!!!!!
the guitar player has a good tone, and I love the pitch shifter setted as an octaver. You should also try to make it play fourths below you are playing, kind of like 500 cents down.
I wonder what sound effects you need for the violin to get that tone. I would like to get that kind of tone for my harmonica.

Actually, I have never heard anyone get that Jerry Goodman sound.
takes real balls to stand on stage do that. What can it possibly be like to even think you can play a John M. part? Well done!
What's up with all the MO tribute bands guitar players playing Strats?? I guess if it works, it works...
very geil
this shit just blew my mind!
Curious Andrew how did you get the audio so clean? What kind of recorder, and media was used. I've never heard Mahaha sound so good live. Seen the original band 5 times. Thanks. Tristan kills on drums, and the violin she smokes. No easy task.
what kind of trainning one must go trough to play jazz guitar like that? i'm asking as a guitar player, if someone has some tips i would appreciate. sorry for the mitakes
I'd kill to play that piano solo
@Shishimu I know man lol. Felipe is such a good guitar player
The drums are just so sexy
john would be proud
any1 able to tab the intro riff?
Nice groove and beat! the 9/8 beat is awesome and confusing at the same time. Personally, i prefer 7/8, but it's also great. i don't know the original song, but your version was amazing! (specially 7:26 O_O) you are super talented... much better than me. i can't wait 'till your next "One-Man-Band" video, these are my favorites. anyway, can you help me out a little with a short guitar part i need in one of my videos? it's really short and simple and i really need it... thanks, and great job!

Just approach it as 4+5 and it is a lot easier.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra is so hard to copy. Billy Cobham in particular.
@Rajhoul Ha it kind of does eh?!
Hmmm. Different. But that's good 👍 this is broken down into sections where the original just went flat out then stopped. Short sharp and sweet
I believe they passed the audition
Time signature please?

Billy Cobham once did some nice peace of drumming.
That drummer does a good job of impersonating the great Billy Cobham. Not easy!
Wanktastic... Seriously though awesome, that looks horrendous to play.
