Visiting the Ikat Revival Project in Banjar Pesalakan Pejeng Kangin

It all began when David Metcalf, a local expat who originated from New Zealand, went to the Banjar (local village council) of Pejeng, and ask how he could help them during the COVID-19 crisis. He learned that at one time, a weaver from Pejeng Kangin used to make handwoven silk and cotton brocade for the daughter of Suharto (President of Indonesia 1967-1998). It turned out that there was not just one, but three very gifted and talented weavers in the village. It was suggested that these women shared their
their weaving skills and knowledge with other women in the village-they agreed and teaching began that very same week. Old looms were brought out from dark and dusty corners, and put to use once again.
Once the word was out, more local women immediately showed an interest. With the help of donations, extra looms were boughts, and cotton and silk threads were purchased from the Klungkung Market. Within just two weeks, Pejeng Kangin had re-established its ikat cottage industry and twelve women are now clack away on their looms in the village six days a week.
“We all think it’s important to keep the weaving tradition alive. But, more importantly, we really need jobs. Our husbands are out of work. Most of them were drivers or hotel workers or worked in cafes and restaurants. Now it’s our turn to step up to the mark.”
YOU CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
By ordering Pejeng ikat weaving, you can become part of the solution and together we can re-establish a cottage industry with a strong cultural significance. The benefits to the village and beyond will be felt long after the pandemic passes.
