Visiting Sayulita and San Pancho - Which is the Better Mexican Beach Town?

Mexico is full of incredible beach towns and the West side of Mexico near Puerto Vallarta is known to have some of the best ones! Just one hour from Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and San Pancho are popular beach towns that are accessible as day trips from the popular tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta. But here's the thing; Sayulita is well known and very commonly visited by holiday goers and surfers looking to catch some waves, but San Pancho is much less visited despite being just a 12 minute drive from Sayulita. This got us wondering, is Sayulita or San Pancho the better Mexican beach town?
Located in the Mexican state of Nayarit, Sayulita has become a very popular tourist destination thanks to it's epic surfing waves. The beach is lined with shops renting our surf boards and offering surf lessons to passers by. The influx of tourists has resulted in a huge increase in all other tourist-related infrastructure - there are tons of hotels ranging from bougie villas to cheap hostels, more cafes and restaurants than you can imagine, and beautiful shops selling all kinds of clothes, jewelry, and souvenirs. In this video, we visit Sayulita first and take our time walking around Sayulita Plaza and the main walking streets to see all the beautiful hand made goods and delicious foods that are available here. We check out Sayulita beach and have an unfortunate incident with Evie and our coffee, and then find a great lunch spot to have some fresh tacos on the side of the road.
After a short drive in the car, we make our way to San Pancho, which we quickly discover is much smaller than nearby Sayulita. There is just one main road in San Pancho, and it's lined with beautiful shops and restaurants just like the streets in Sayulita. At the end of the road you arrive at San Francisco beach, which is a much more peaceful experience than Sayulita beach (coffee incident aside). We toko our time enjoying a coffee with our toes in the sand and listening to a man play Journey songs on a flute before walking further down San Francisco beach to let Evie run around and play in the water.
At the end of the day, we loved both Sayulita and San Pancho. Both beach towns make a great day trip from Puerto Vallarta, but which one is best for you will depend on your travel style and whether or not you're looking to meet people. We hope you enjoy the video and find our comparison of Sayulita and San Pancho helpful in planning your own trip to these gorgeous Mexican beach towns!

Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico and in March 2021, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and began traveling the world! We never thought we'd be making travel vlogs on KZread, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.

San Pancho has a great night life. Lots of people come out to watch the sunset afterward go to dinner. There is lots of music and great food. San Pancho is what Sayulita was about 20 years ago. A little further north is Guayabitos, it is super chill with a large bay to hang out and enjoy.

So good to know! It looked so peaceful and quiet when we visited, it's hard to imagine it can get lively at night. We would love to spend more time there one day!

You both have the perfect voices and vibes for youtube travel videos. A little more information would be great about each town.Personally i like to go to the mountains as well for the day to San Sebastian de Oeste. Its a neat town with alot of history in mining. Also it is nice to have the cool mountain air. The scenery getting there is amazing.Road is a little crazy alot of twist and turns. Best coffee i have ever had was there.

People say San Pancho is Sayulita 10 years ago but I disagree. Sayulita continues to go down the 'party town' path. I don't see San Pancho ever being a party town. Sayulita people think nothing ever happens in San Pancho and San Pancho people feel like Sayulita is frenetic, over-developed and busy. Younger people will tend to like Sayulita and older people will like San Pancho. Another main difference is the ocean. San Pancho has a better sunset view but the waves and undertow make it dangerous to swim in. Sayulita beaches are safe and swimmable.

That is the only problem with San pancho-can’t go swimming in the ocean! Unfortunately! Sayulita 10 years ago was awesome. Looks too busy for me now!
