The lodging advice is spot on. I used to work in a hotel and so many people wouldn’t book ahead of time and literally the whole state fills up rooms on the weekends in the summer.

Bonus tips: 1: Moxie is great don't let anyone, even most of the locals, tell you different. 2: "Fall" is more of an educated guess of what you can expect when you get here. September can be pretty hot sometimes and you should be mentally prepared to drive through a little bit of snow if you come in October/November.

I got to see Maine, back in 1990: a summer bike trip up the seacoast, from Popham Beach to Bar Harbor. I was ready to plunk down money for a summer home right then and there! But I was only 15, and I didn't have any.

I think the smaller roadside motels work because of why people generally vacation in Maine. You come to slow down, even during the summer. People are generally really nice and nobody is in a hurry. It’s not unique but they play up to the cozy feel. Get lost and bring a paper map because GPS doesn’t work is a little counter intuitive. There is a different feel to the side roads but for specifically Maine, the highways are still great. Billboards are illegal and we spend a ton of money keeping the wood line clean, specifically because it’s beautiful to look at. I know this was in Maine and talking for New England but those two things really separate them from the rest and undervalues Maines scenic highways. I think the larger point was stay away from typical tourist things, mostly. Which is true, almost anything you can do there you can do somewhere else for half the price or less. Maine has a relatively low cost of living and if you can avoid some of the traps you can get a lot of value for your money. You need Moxie to be able to drink Moxie. Fun Fact; That is where the word Moxie originates. We also seem to name our dogs Moxie a lot...

I went to Spain and Portugal in 2012, Jamaica in 2015, Savannah, Georgia, USA in 2017 and the Azores also in 2017--they worked for all those trips.

Loved the comment about lobster and ice cream :) In my region, beautiful Lofoten in Northern Norway, we are known for producing stockfish (dried cod). Some tried/served it on soft ice. For some reason it just never coughed on :)

Jocelyn Wolters : Most of the stockfish/dried cod from Lofoten goes to Italy. In Portugal they use "clipfish" that is some dried fish from Norway as well, but not from my region. When visiting Rome I didn't get the option of fish on my gelato either ;)

Just watched this and: 1) Moxie is actually closer to a rootbeer with a pronounced bitterness. Also, it's not really an acquired taste as you typically like it or you don't, no real in between. If you don't, more for the rest of us! 2) You forgot to mention the red hotdogs. As far as I know, it's just a Maine thing. We have "natural" colored hotdogs, but red is just iconic. 3) We don't all talk like Tim Sample or Bob Marley (no, the comedian). 4) Mainers have an interesting sense of humor. (i.e. You can't get there from here, you have to stahht someplace else.)

it depends on when you go. Close to water the leaves tend to change earlier so If you come in late september/early october stay close to the coastline and if you're here in late October go a little farther north. I live somewhat near the coastline and sometimes you only get a short window where all the foliage is nice because one or two good rainfalls will strip most of the trees.

You certainly won't be treated like fecal material in Texas. Come see what really nice people are like. Find some smaller cities to visit. Large metro areas aren't indicative of true Texas hospitality. Too many people there that aren't true Texans. I know that from experience growing up in Houston. Maybe Maine's slogan should be Tourists NOT Welcome.

Don’t go on weekends, stay in a CUTE motel and hotels are normally more expensive and wear LL Bean - WHAT. I normally LOVE your videos, this being a wicked big exception. I’m disappointed You don’t GET fall in New England. But you did manage to hit Most of the obvious cliches. Disappointed PS 1 “Leaf Peepin” is not a compliment or an action verb in New England. It is a proper noun: Leaf Peepers. The closest comparison is when Floridians look at the wagon trains trailing south beginning right after foliage season and with some dread and dismay mutter: “Here come the Snowbirds”. PS 2: Maps or a GPS? Did you think “You can’t get there from HEAH” was a folkloric New Englandism? Nu uh. That’s the wicked norm for giving directions. (And btw, adding pissuh to wicked is personal choice and situationally case specific.) Guess I’m glad you took aim at Maine and stayed away from Vt and NH.

barbara cronin I appreciate ypur candor but, I think you mistook me. Dress in practical clothes and layers, LL Bean notwithstanding. Do you really not think the 1950s roadside motels are cute? I love them, I love stepping back in time for a minute. When every inn and BnB was booked (because weekends are crazy busy) we found a Westin for little more than half what we would pay in comparable cities...and fairly unoccupied. It was an excellent 3rd choice as far as price and availability went since I hadn't booked ahead on a weekend. I'm sad you feel I didn't get* fall in New England.
