The service "problem" is not really a thing, in Belgium the waiters don't want to be in everybodies face when people are eating. We belgians like to eat calmly and want to enjoy our meals with family and friends without the waiter! It may look frustrating to tourists and especially the tourists from the US. But most belgians hate it when the waiters are coming every few seconds to ask if everything is okay, it looks fake and irritates us.

Yes, true he says the german service is a lot more professional, how dare he, the belgians are with the french some of the best waiters in the world If you don't fall in a tourist trap restaurant like he has. I strongly do not recommend this review of Brussels !

I'm from Brussels and I agree with some of your comments, but not all. First, if you expect Brussels to be like Paris, London or NY just because it's the European Union HQ and then it lets you down, sorry but that's a silly reason. London, Paris or NY are huge cities with over 10 millions inhabitants, whereas there are barely between 1 and 2 millions people in Brussels. This comparison doesn't make any sense. You should rather compare Brussels with cities like Hamburg, Lisbon, Copenhagen or Vienna.

I think the biggest problem with Brussels is that it is half Walloons and half Flemish. Because there is always some kind of 'threat' that will spread the country, Brussels will receive less attention. Cities such as Ghent, Brugges and Antwerp are all really Flemish, which gives more security there. Imagine investing in Brussels as a Walloon businessman, while eventually becoming independent? Then you suddenly have a problem. In those other cities that would never happen.

It's expensive because you've been lunching in tourist traps we see at 3:14 ! Ghent ou Bruges are way more expensive than Brussels, trust me. Brussels is way more bigger than this famous historical part where tourists are growded : you should visit Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Etterbeek and surrounding places that are way more various and authentic than the central area ;)

I'm from Brussels and I love it but I understand that it's not always the easiest city to love when you don't really know it. There are many things here I don't like. I think we lost so much wonders of our past, but I also think that it's not so desperate. We still have a juge amount of treasures to offer to visitors. The only problem is we don't always show it well. We have many things we don't even think about putting in light, castles and palaces (Laeken, the royal palace, little castles like Karreveld...), churches (gothic cathedral, the Sablon church, baroque...), all kind of architecture (the world biggest building of the XIXth century : the justice palace), Art Nouveau (Horta buildings, Hankar buildings, Stoclet House, thousands of sgraffitos and stained glasses everywhere, royal greenhouses...), Art Deco (even the biggest Art Deco building in Europe : the basilica of Sacred Heart in Koekelberg, BOZAR...), parks and even a real forest ! But what we always show is a little peeing statue (ok it's a symbol but every tourist coming here and seeing it says "Oh that's it ? It's so small !") and the Grand Place (ok, it's a wonder but it's not the only one). The city is currently under huge transformations for the coming years. Biggest pedestrian zone in Europe for example (not easy to create and controversial but it's done), many transformations, modern constructions... I think the face of Brussels will change in a few years. I hope for the best... We'll see. So come back in a few years and I hope there will be less negative points and more positive ones ! We'll do our best :) But don't go to eat in the butcher's street !!!! And yes, Midi Station is the main station of Brussels, Central station is not so big because it was build in the middle of a very old city and the space in the center was very limited, so Midi station is just outside the old city and much bigger... Just to know, Brussels (the 19 communes) is actually bigger than Paris (the 20 arrondissements), but with half its population... And the transport is shit, Paris has 14 lines of metro, we have barely 4 and half... But new ones are in project, as is the R.E.R. (regional train) which we're waiting for maybe 30 years... But still, there's hope...

Being born in Paris, spent 20 years there etc... Now living for 3 years in Brussels I can say Brussels is WAAAAAAAY nicer and safer than Paris. It's smaller, but it's more charming. Buildings are very old and typical, while Paris was reconstructed in the 18th century. But it's only my opinion. But for foreigners, people here are way much more friendly, it's easy to hang out with a local, sharing some tasty beers and learn about the every day life here. It is pretty sad to realise that everybody only want to see the clichés things like : America = macdonalds and cheap burgers everywhere or Paris = omagad, eiffel tower, so sexy or Germany = aggressive speakers and very well organised. Come on guys, travel and see what is for you or not. (Please stop with the terrorist things, it is as true as saying that planes go every single day in towers in NYC...)

The street you showed with the restaurants is a street made to lurk in tourists. Belgians avoid places like that because it is made to profit from the naivety of the tourists. The people working there are rude and they are not afraid to set you up by letting you pay more than the food is worth.

    * Brussels can be very cheap, don't go in the center :) search before going to a restaurant, in the center there are lots of shitty tourist restaurants ( Rue des bouchers) * If you are interested in history, go to the national military museum (at Jubileumpark, which is a nice park to run at), it's free, it's huge and you can get on top of a giant arch with great overview (picture in the video), other great museums are the instrument museum or the comic book museum * Like New York, Brussels consists of several small towns, some of them have interesting architecture (Hallepoort or Victor Horta at Sint Gillis, for example), but mostly those are the places to find good restaurants * Go to Marollen, originally a poor neigboorhood (but nowadays upwards), there at Vossenplein EVERY morning you can go look at old antiques and stuff people sell - you might find a very original souvenir for a great price! * Brussels is best enjoyed at night time, it's a great place to go out ( with lots of gay bars, if you're into that), I would reccomend getting to know a local and going out together *One great thing of Brussels is the amount of interesting street artists and bands - especially during summertime * a fun thing to do if you are in a group is to book a walking dinner, you taste some beers, learn some local culture and get some good food - it's fun ( but not very cheap), you can also dine in a riding tram ( the tramexperience) , but again, not cheap!

Lived there for a year and traveled to many countries in Europe. Brussels and Belgium in general remains one of my favorite places. There certainly is a lot to do and see in Brussels. Loads of events to go to, so much to see. Take the metro around and get out of the city center. The people are also very friendly.

That's a very, ermmm... american view on the city. What kind of person expects the Manneken Pis to be big? It really feels like he expected Brussels to speak english and have the same kind of restaurant service "system" you'd see in USA.

Agree. Also, you can't compare Brussels to New York (?!) or expect to be the same type of hype-city. Firstly, because the US and the EU are indeed different. Secondly, why would someone compare NYC with Brussels being the "capital city of Europe"? If anything, shouldn't it be compared to Washington D.C. instead?

Woltersworld, Saying Brussels is overrated is not true , you only need to know where to go same goes for other countries . People only read touristical information but there are better places to visit . Brussels isn't only La Grand Place , Manneken Pis, etc.. there are thousand other places to visit many museums . Cartoon museum, Victor Horta museum, if you take the tram to Tervuren you have the Afrikaans museum. Never go to La Rue des Bouchers were all the restaurants are , they are ruled by mafia people and are very bad they only wants tourists or idiot people to go eat there . They are overpriced for oldstyle cuisine. Brussels isn't only politics it is a free cliché . But Brussels has alot history since 1830 to nowadays alot architectures etc... Paris is overrated too La Tour Eiffel, l'Arc de Triumphe , La Senne , Versailles, is all what tourists know , but there are other great places to go too . New York isn't only the Empire State Building, Buildings or the 5th Avenue , the're other great places to go outside the city with many history . A hint i will say : never go in holidays during June,July,August those are the most expensive months everywhere. Best to travel in March,April,May or September,October more cheap less crowdy , more relax .

This reminds me why Europeans are so different from Americans. "There's not a lot to see...." "lots of museums" "amazing architecture" and my favorite "It's a life sized boy peeing". Americans really don't get finesse, culture, knowledge, beauty or discreteness. That statue was created before America was discovered.....you should think about that before you formulate remarks.

2:48 In my opinion (I'm studying in Brussels) this city is not expensive at all. Sure, if you want to eat or drink something near the Grand Place you will have to spend a lot of money, but when you walk just for about 100 meter there are shops with very reasonable prices. 3:10 I totally agree that the Rue des Bouchers is not the place to be for good service and low prices (drinks). Again, broaden your scope, walk for a few meters and you'll find much better shops/bars/restaurants,...

Actually he got it spot on. Being a Belgian at first i got confused myself about the naming of the Brussels railway station ''Midi'' which is Brussels south and several US citizens asked me in the train where to step off. And also to me ''Manneke Pis'' look tiny. But the advise to only stay 1 day in Brussels will denie you the opportunity to see allot of it, also all mentioned and not mentioned museums. IF you are there visit also my own historic city Mechelen which you reach in 16 minutes by direct train. Our small city was once the Capital of the Netherlands and what now is Belgium in the time of Margaretha van Oostenrijk and her nephew Emperor Carolus V Also here are mid-age houses and a Cathedral from the 14th Century.

Brussels is beautiful. Lots of things to do and see. The restaurant alley he showed is just for uninformed tourists. There are a lot of great restaurants within walking distance from the Grand Place. The train stations? Gare du Nord is just what is says... the North Station. Central Station- the same. Gare du Midi is where the hi-speed trains leave from. If you have a ticket for, say the Thalys, your ticket is good to go from Central to Midi (or visa/versa)- no need to purchase an additional ticket! As an American that lived in the Netherlands for 10 years- Brussels is wonderful. As are most of the cities in Euro.

gallaghim Hi, I am Belgian and live in Brussels. Women (mainly) should avoid the Yser and Canal areas, especially at night. Don't get me wrong, it feels more insecure than the rest of the city but you don't risk death going there. Also, what is shown in the video is real but very touristic and has not much to do with everyday life in Bxl.

woltersworld Thanks for that it definitely helps. I have been considering staying at a hotel right near Central Station. It's a short distance from many of the touristy places so i figure it'd be pretty safe. Time spent in Brussels will be limited anyway as there is so much of the country to explore. Thanks again :)

gallaghim Molenbeek (the area on the west side of the canal) I would only visit with someone who knows the area. Not terribly dangerous, but it's a little bit small Morocco, almost as confusing as in Marrakech, and while it has its attractive sights, there is lots of poverty, too, as with most areas around the canal. The area around North station is our red light district. There are some normal bars and right behind the street is Brabant Street, almost a soukh for all the stuff you can find, but there really is nothing worth to see. Kuregem, on the west side of South Station, is not as appealing, either, it's a typical throughway area, with lots of foreign newcomers with little money and thrash. During the day, I wouldn't be too scared (but keep the expensive cameras away, but at night, stay away if you don't know the area. I'm used to get some lunch there, and there are some nice buildings, but there is enough to see in Brussels to be occupied. The sights I recommend: St-Géry and Ste-Catherine in the centre, the basilica of Koekelberg and the area around (you have to like art déco, but if you do, it's the largest art deco church in the world), Grand'Place (probably the most beautiful square in the world, even if I would just have a coffee or something, prices are a rip-off), the museum of comics (Stripmuseum), looking down from the Mont des Arts and visiting the Music Instruments Museum there, just taking some random tram lines (be sure to include line 44 to Tervuren), visit some one of the many markets (such as on Flagey in Ixelles, or on the Parvis the St-Gilles), look for a festival (such as Brosella, near the Atomium), etc.

Brussels has great arcitecture, food and bee. Go to the cartoon museum ( Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke ), Grand Place, Manneken Pis, Atomium etc. Enjoy the food and all the good beer and chocalate at Grand Place and around the small pubs there. You can sit there for hours just watching people enjoying beer, wine, canapes and other good stuff. The main food street, that is called rue des bouchers is not what it used to be. Basically all the restaurant seem to be owned by the same people and does not have the friendly atmosphere as it used to have. There are many other places with good food and atmosphere though. It would look a bit wierd if Manneken Pis wich is supposed to portray a small boy were 2 meter in size ...

I just came back from Brussels and I have to disagree with this review on many points. Firstly, it is perfectly safe. Much more so than my home town of NYC ( sorry guys!), Secondly, there is no shortage of things to do in Brussels. If you want Paris or London, then go to Paris or London. Brussels is world class. Thirdly, it is only expensive if you don't know where to look. There were plenty of affordable restaurants and shops all around the city.

how about naming some of these affordable restaurants or where to find them? Not all of us agree with Wolter but he is at least providing something more definitive to go on. Better alternatives: views, comments, video are all welcomed. Complaints and disagreements .... Not so much. Those does not help those of us who have never been. I should have addressed this too all and not just you. Sorry for that.

Even though I understand most points and I think your video is well done, there is one point that I find quite hard to understand, the fact that Brussels is overrated. I kind of have the feeling that Belgium in general is an ignored country, not many people talk about it. When I watch American movies, I always hear about Paris or London, sometimes Amsterdam, but very rarely Brussels. So, it's hard for me to understand that Brussels is overrated. Moreover, I don't understand that you expected New York, if you looked carefully on a map, you would have seen that Brussels is way smaller that New York or London, I mean, you can't even compare, just look at Belgium. Anyway, for the other points I understand, but I must admit this one is really surprising.

Looks like you didn't really enjoy Brussels compared to Ghent and Bruges. Which I understand, it's not as easy to discover the awesome things in Brussels, because it looks like the city is less focused on tourists. But if you stay in these cities for like more than a week, you'll probably start loving Brussels more than the others. There's soooo much to see and do in Brussels. Great architecture, great bars, great shops, ... And of course it's less safe than for example Bruges, but Bruges is a really small city. Brussels is the biggest city in Belgium, so it has the most problems (but still, it's actually a very safe city and people overreact). Also, you're reason to be dissapointed is a bit weird. I don't know whether you did research or not, but if you did, you'd have seen that Brussels is not at all a city like New York, Paris or London, expecting this is just weird. It only has about 1m inhabitants, while those others have millions of inhabitants.

This guy (Wolters) is completely right. I come a lot in Brussels so I know what I'm talking about. The big problem with Brussels nowadays is that everyone feels like a stranger in this town. Not only the people from abroad, but everyone. The place for whole Europe is a home for no one. Brussels has it's good and bad points, but homelessness is the sad base. The movie "Brussels by Night" already showed this in the '80's.

1.08 What the hell do you tourists expect of a statue of 'a little boy who's peeing'. Why would they've made it huge? :') It's a little boy? :D 2.02 You don't have to exchange tickets or whatever. Basically al the trains that go to brussels stop in South-Central-North. So if you've picked the wrong station just take the next train, they don't do ticket control in Brussels so don't worry. Also, when you get on the train they ALWAYS announce where it will stop. If you get in at Ghent you'll enter Brussels from the south side and Midi will be the first stop. When you're almost at the station above the door you'll see where it stops and what the next stations are. Also if you enter a station there are a lot of signs that say which station it is. So if you're at the wrong station that's basically cause you didn't pay attention but don't worry just take an other train to the station you have to go. (South-Central is also just a 15 minutes walk) 2.50 you've just been ripped off like in every other tourist spots all over the world. If you go to Venice you'll say 'wow that was an expensive drink'. Just use your common sense, everyone know you'll paying a lot more if you want to eat around the Grand-Place. Also, me as Belgian i hate it when a waiter comes to my table every minute to ask if i need anything or if the food is good. If i want something, i'll ask. It's just the way it works here. 2.38 well, there are places in London, Paris, New York, Barcelona where you better watch your backpack. Welcome to the world? :D
