virtual desktop HEVC 10bit, just WOW, best PCVR streaming solution yet.

Ғылым және технология

the virtual desktop beta update I covered previously is finally out to public, and with it comes some seriously impressive performance improvements, especially in the new HEVC 10bit mode.
shown here on my Pico neo 3 link using 120hz, max 150mb bitrate, ultra resolution, HEVC 10bit.
without recording it is at 35ms total latency reported from VD, the same as I was getting at normal HEVC 120hz.
amazing work and absolutely worth checking out virtual desktop for your oculus quest 2 / meta quest 2, Pico neo 3 link and Pico 4.
while it can't quite match the display port cable of the neo 3 link, with all the updates that VD brings its exciting to see how it keeps getting closer and closer.
amazing work virtual desktop team, big thanks from me!

    10bit made more of a difference than i expected. I also tried local dimming on the quest pro, but like I had trouble actually seeing a difference unless I look at something completly black. But yeah like it looks very black when local dimming is on, dunno how different it feels in stuff like hl alyx, the 10 bit on the other hand.

    A pretty old (but decent) WiFi 5 router. Linksys ea9500. No special settings as such, the VR is the only thing on its higher band WiFi, no other devices use it, wired by ethernet to PC. Channel it's using is completely clear and not overlapped with any other signals. No band steering or any other features enabled, just set as a WiFi access point. Always just worked! Very big router with alot of antennas, has amazing WiFi range.

    Yes, I still use my neo 3 link display port over Pico 4 on PC, no streaming through app will really be able to match that unless making the display port side wireless (nofio / vive wireless adapter)

    Hi! For Better image and clearly pixels, Is Better hevc 10bit at 150 mbs or h264+ at 300/400 mbs? Thanks

  • @virtuallyreal

    @virtuallyreal

    10bit is better in darker or more open situations that you notice colour banding in, as it helps that H264+ at higher settings will retain distance details better than HEVC and hevc10bit and is useful in faster motion which can cause the HEVC and hevc10bit image to break down. Really does depend on what your playing, personally I always use hevc10bit

    Does the Q2 still have better picture quality via usb 3 cable connection than this air method?

  • @virtuallyreal

    @virtuallyreal

    9 ай бұрын

    Oculus link (cable) can do 500ish max at ''tolerable'' latency but that's h264, so you still see colour banding which you can't solve even bumping up bitrate to what people say 960mb is the max, which becomes basically unplayable for me with latency at the cost of a very small gain in image. Personally if I have to do pcvr streaming by WiFi or usb, I'm using virtual desktop HEVC 10 bit mode at higher refresh rates

    @@atriusvinius319 sadly it still many more years until streaming can match a display port. Closest solutions so far are the Vive wireless and nofio for index, but they both have their own compromises to visuals but the tracking data doesn't get any delay being lighthouse based. I wish headsets would just offer the extra port to allow proper display port, I don't think anyone wouldn't want to pay a little extra for that, seems wasteful that you have higher and higher resolutions, better lenses, yet still streaming from the pc 😔

    I am wondering why they named this 264+ not 265, which supposed to be 10bit HEVC. But still it must be some serious fidelity bump to image quality and compression, even if games are still using 8bit textures or lower. Maybe some day I will finally try VD. It is possible to set 5Ghz hotspot from PC instead of connecting through 5Ghz router to get it work?

  • @mjcox242

    @mjcox242

    ok so lemme explain 264+ is just normal H264 with a higher max bitrate, its just seperated as it needs a pristine network to work properly, HVEC is 265, HVEC-10Bit sends a 10 bit image Also question about using windows hotspot is don't, it functions however its only really supported to have a dedicated router using gigabit ethernet

    10bit gets rid of colour banding so is better in darker areas or open clear sky, it's what I choose to use. If you need to retain details in fast motion like SIM racing, then max h264+

    @@mostwanted2000 there is certainly a difference, especially darker areas or things such as the sky. 10bit is just the encoding, it's a trick to retain those lost details when streaming, no headset has proper 10bit support, there will be no colour or contrast differences because of 10bit, just more uniform colours that don't have banding between shades
