Until Tekken came and showed how bare bones they were. No endings, obligatory 8 base roster characters, with just 2 characters added per new game, and almost no other game modes. But at least Sega noticed they were being left behind by episode 3. But around that time Namco answered with Tekken 3.

I still remember how stunning Virtua Fighter 3 was upon release, and how blown away the gaming world was by it. Good times.

The jump from Virtua fighter 1 graphics to Virtua Fighter 2 was just legendary

Fun Fact: Sega's originally planned protagonist for Shenmue was Akira Yuki.

Yes, Shenmue started out as a Virtua Fighter for Satur but was canceled to be released on the Dreamcast.

Wow I loved playing these games when they first came out. I still own Virtua Fighter 1-5, Virtua Fighter Kids, and Fighters Megamix.

Im still so impressed by Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis and Virtua Fighter on the 32X

It would've made more sense if the designers used the same animation style from the Virtua Fighter anime to make that 2D version, like the Master System/Game Gear ports.

Virtua fighter, Virtua cop... Takes me back to the arcade.

It was always overshadowed by the 2 juggernauts of the the 90's. Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter. I remember playing this with friends back in the mid to late 90's. Akira, Jacky & Kage main right here. ^_-

I didn’t know about these games but recently. I was searching for the anime to bring back some nostalgic memories from my childhood, then I learned that the anime is originally adapted from a video game and not from a manga.

I honestly thought Tekken is a spinoff of Virtua Fighter

The lead designer on the original VF went over to namco and worked on Tekken

I have the VF2 (Genesis) on my PC and VF5 on my PS3. My love for the VF franchise started when I watched the anime series based on the game when I was a child though. These games are awesome and one of the reasons I like martial arts.

As much as I love Virtua Fighter, it's a bummer that Sega has just been re-releasing VF5 over and over for almost 20 years. I mean, you can't call you game "Final Showdown" and then dip back into that well one more time with "Ultimate Showdown." What's left? "Marvel-Post-Credits Showdown?"

i remember you could fight robot boss at the end which is extremely difficult, but i never reached to this level but my cousin did and win, i was sooo jealous about it lol

Good 3D graphics... but very limited style of fight and storyline, so generic. Maybe a good point for those who like a game close to real life..."without magic flavor"

That's because Virtua Fighter was the first ever 3D Fighter. Sega wanted to recapture the essence of physical martial arts.

Virtua Fighter was never released on PS1, the first games are from Saturn and Dreamcast
