I flew this route as an 8 year old in June 2003 with my parents and younger sister, Virgin Atlantic 747 if I recall. I also recall getting a multi-coloured backpack with Virgin Atlantic branding on it, inside was an amenity type kit and colouring books etc. Flew again I believe the exact same route in 2005 but don't recall if that time it was Virgin Atlantic or British Airways. Haven't been to the USA since and most holidays now are either domestic within GB or to Spain with Aer Lingus, easyJet or Vueling. Having just checked it appears the multi-coloured backpack was the VA K-ID backpack. I have fond memories as a young lad in possibly 2004? My mum, sister, uncle and aunt all flew to Lanzarote. Myself and my dad couldn't go because there weren't enough seats left so we had a flight booked for the next day. I recall my dad watching the lottery (back then I was 9 and didn't really know anything about it) and he said "If our numbers come up we'll be on the next flight out". We flew out the next day with JMC airlines before they merged. I always recall the bright green tail. Around 2006 or 2007 I flew with XL Airways UK to either Seville or Malaga, before XL went bust.

Great video! Lovely to see a classic jet in operation and cool to see all those old aircraft and airlines at Gatwick!

I took a very similar flight in April 2000 when I was 13 during the Easter school holidays - I remember trying to watch the Pokémon Movie on those tiny screens very well. During the flight some of the young children were allowed into the cockpit to meet the pilots. Due to weather in the Atlantic we went on a more northerly course than usual and came down the eastern seaboard. I know this is not the same flight because on arrival at Orlando we landed rather heavily with a loud bang and some of the overhead luggage fell out! Thanks for the memories this video brought back! :)

My pleasure. I also watched the Pokémon movie (even though I was 26 at the time!). Seem to also remember watching Galaxy Quest and possibly Three Kings - those small screens didn't make it easy though!

Also remember the aircraft being approx. an hour late departing - apparently some problem with one of the engines meant we had to taxi back to the gate but eventually got the all clear.

2:00 I remember this scene from my childhood; walking past a Virgin 742 to board a Monarch jet at Gatwick. So weird to see on video something that's existed only in my memories.

Don't think we were trying to film anything specific. This was our first ever flight so just keen to capture arrival into a foreign country!

I flew on Maiden Voyager from Miami into LGW later in 2000, just after the Concorde crash. Economy had just been refurbished (it doesn't look like it's had an update here?) I too got to visit the cockpit, as I often did in those more innocent, pre-9/11 days. And yes, those IFE screens were HIDEOUS! But Virgin were one of only a handful of carriers to have personal screens in Economy for most of the 90s.

Why the hell virgin Atlantic retired it?

They were retired and replaced by 747-400s in 2005 as they just weren’t fuel efficient enough to be profitable for Virgin. That’s just how it is unfortunately.

Both airlines & passengers hate having to travel all the way from London down to Brighton Gatwick Airport. BA has just been forced into a humiliating backdown by the Ghanaian Govt which threatened to send BA flights to an other airport in the middle of nowhere, 100 miles form Accra if BA went ahead and transferred flights from London to Brighton.

Gatwick is much closer to London than Brighton especially on the Gatwick Express
