Anton Bruckner's setting of the medieval text 'Virga Jesse floruit' is one of his most popular motets, performed by choirs around the world. Composed in 1885, it packs a lot of drama into a short space of time. This archive footage was recorded in St Augustine, Kilburn by kind permission of the Vicar & Churchwardens.

Hats off!!! This is the best choir I've ever listened to. They have the most difficult repertoire and yet they deliver the most exquisite performance every time. All the range of voices blends perfectly, the acoustic is perfect. Nigel Short and the Tenebrae Choir will always deliver a master piece. Enjoy it.

I'm surprised that Nigel Short didn't record this in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral - surely the best acoustic in the UK for a cappella Bruckner??

More people are religious than ever. What even are you talking about. The exact opposite is the case.
Beautiful dynamic rendition by Nigel Short. But: what is it with almost every english choir that they have very clean transparency and almost tremolo-free singing in SAT, but then the basses destroy everything by roaring like a foghorn swollen with thick tremolo in every forte. Really does not work at all with the other voices... SAT are a choir, while basses are opera soloists here. Same with Monteverdi Choir and several other great english choir. I don't understand.
