Os justi - Bruckner - Tenebrae conducted by Nigel Short

Музыка

Altos: Hannah Cooke, Martha McLorinan, Eleanor Minney, Elisabeth Paul
Tenors: Jeremy Budd, Nicholas Madden, Nicholas Todd, Toby Ward
Basses: Joseph Edwards, William Gaunt, Andrew Mahon, Owain Park, Simon Whiteley
Produced by Jonathan Coates.

Imagine this song back in the day. People with no way to record music and only hearing this after travelling many miles just to hear this. They must have revered these singers as just short of angels. Truly magnificent!

Mozart transcribed Miserere Mei, Deus by memory after only hearing it twice. He then sent his manuscript to an English publisher. At the time, private ownership of that piece was banned by the church. His publication forced the church to lift the ban. Imagine that, though. Only hearing the piece twice, and being able to jot it down perfectly.

A better word: they are gifted by God with vocal perfection, just as Bruckner was gifted by God to compose. Gifts of all kinds, some used, some ignored, some using their gifts yet never thanking God. It is always wonderful to hear the results of these gifts come together in works of art.

In 1982, my university choir stood in the spot at St. Florian where Bruckner first directed his choir in this work. We then went into the catacombs below the monastery and stood around Bruckner's casket, with all the skulls of priests lining the wall and sang it again. I cried as I listened to this for the first time. Blessings to you all.

Having spent twenty minutes viewing postings from the USA - all of them bearing witness to the sheer lunacy of the views upheld by a significant proportion of the populace; and having, thereby, become increasingly depressed with the state of mankind, I have accidentally landed on this performance of sheer beauty and perfection; a flickering candle of hope in a mad world which seems to have lost its bearings. Where all that is brash threatens to annihilate the delicate, the fragile and the supremely beautiful. I thank you for this, and all your postings on ‘utube’; which, one might tentatively hope, will bring about a wider appreciation of this genre, and in so doing, enrich the lives of those who are fortunate enough to make the discovery. Long may you prosper in your noble work.

KZread is a tool like anything else. You can use it to build, edify, and encourage, or tear down, mock, ridicule and judge. These days, the internet will quickly discover your preferences and guide you in that direction. You are on the right path!

@@TinaYWu-lw1qx I guess that is "Baroque" (?)......the choir DOES interpret older compositions as well and perform all pieces beautifully, don't you think?💛Os justi WAB 30, is a sacred motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1879. Os Justi is a Gregorian chant used as gradual of the Commune Doctorum.........thank you for the citation.

After fifty years, I can still sing the first tenor part. A little gem indeed, comparable to Josquin. And a wonderful, courageously broad performance by Tenebrae. Thank you. Cheers from snowy Vienna, Scott

As a great music lover who passed away recently used to say about great singers: "Oh, they just can't sing...." and then started laughing in awe. He would have appreciated this performance I'm sure.

Magnificent. This captures the spirit as well as the letter of the piece in a way that some equally polished versions elsewhere singularly fail to do. It's an incredibly beautiful motet and getting the performance it deserves here.
