Violence, Sexuality, and Colonialism- Dr. Muhammad Moiz, Ep 20 Mocca With Moiz

Violence against the khawaja sarah community in Pakistan has continued unabated despite the State’s endeavors to address the same. In this episode, we discuss what it means to be a khawaja sarah, toxic masculinity, colonialism’s rule in marginalizing the khawaja community. We argue that the plight of Khawaja sarahs today may be traced to colonial practices before discussing the recent phenomenon of violence by the Beelas

It is a rare person who can hold your attention for hours, specially so if you have an ADHD diagnosis like me. Before this video I could only think of Dr. Arfa Syeda and Dr. Adil Omar from among our compatriots. It makes me real glad to say that Dr. Moiz is the torch bearer of that glorious tradition from the current generation.

Amazingly interesting interview. Such a knowledgeable gentleman. Wonder if he knows, I am sure he would, since he affiliates himself with sufism, that they have hereditary rites in Islam. 1400 years before. There were such cases and rather intense ones which were resolved by Maula Ali. He gave absolute proofs to establish the genders in certain complicated cases, where he had soldiers who would fight with such valor and courage as never to be doubted for a woman which I personally was shocked to read.

MMK is fun to listen to, but his verisimilitude is absent, I opine. Putting it mildly, asserting your truth while ignoring others is regarded as a bias. Moving on, interpreting what someone read in the books is just vomiting. Studies reveal, thinking analytically, those KHAWAJA SARAS were deliberately formed by castration in order to get employed in courts, so saying that spirituality is the only essence of KHAWAJA SARAIYAT is not misinformation but also disinformation. I might be amiss; I am open to other notions. Notwithstanding, the path Mehrub Moiz Khan chose is not the easiest one in this society. I would consider him sincere, dignified, and an educationalist when he would be sitting with his family in an interview after his academic accolades, which is attaining validation from home than others. Thank you for reading.

I am a supporter of Moiz as a person and his work for the most part, but had some critical remarks from the first few minutes of this podcast: The claims about gendered/sexual anxieties of the Christian British (no more than what existed among members of other Abrahamic religions) being connected to modernity and capitalism are speculative and prima facie implausible. Blaming everything on the British is fashionable for some reason in the subcontinent (maybe more so in Pakistan), but not a good approach IMO. Also when mentioning women warriors Moiz forgot Saint Joan of Arc. There have probably been others too, but she's the most famous one among Europeans. Though it wasn't clear how the women warriors point was related either to the Criminal Tribes Act or gendered/sexual anxiety in general. I have a lot more to say about this but will leave it for now, as I would end up writing a really long essay.
