Scale length of stringed instruments matter quite a bit when it comes to tone, typically longer stringed instruments with the same tuning as a shorter stringed instrument will sound more full with more low end, but the trade off maybe ease of play-ability.

Matt, what's the skale length difference? I think a 17" 5 string viola would be Hella brutal with frets.
