Viola on Why She Stopped Wearing Wigs

Ойын-сауық

Viola Davis told Anderson, "I took off my wig because I wanted to step into who I was. I felt like every time I put on a wig I was apologizing for being a dark-skinned woman with curly hair, like I was hiding it."

@Jen Duncan I'm not an American but I have seen many cases were black women with natural hair couldn't get jobs or lost their jobs after going to work with natural hairstyles many many women have experienced that, even schools didn't want students especially black girls wearing their natural afros, it could be the jealousy I don't know, but educate yourself.. will yaa

However when you're a black woman or man Being who you are in your natural state can sometimes not be accepted. Braids, dred Locs or even just a natural fro can get you kicked out of school because it's a "distraction " or fired for being unprofessional. You dont think I know everyone has the choice ?! Yea everyone should without being judged. Thanks you.

@John D Gates THAT is the stupidest thing I have ever read. Firstly, I'm a lesbian. There will be no "he"s. Secondly, the common heterosexual is a fascinating creature indeed, to say it would be my fault if this hypothetical husband cheated on me because I get dressed for myself in the morning and not him? Madness. Do straight men really marry women off of looks? I suppose it makes sense considering all those Boomer memes about hating your wives and how they get "ugly" or whatver. If I propose to a woman its not cause she dresses how I want her to dress, its because we have been in a cmmitted relationship for years and I LOVE her, as an individual not as a pretty thing to look at it. Nothing is wrong with doing something your partner likes but that should come from a place of wanting both of you to enjoy yourselves but no youa re not REQUIRED to give a DAMN about anyone's opinion on your wardobe including your spouse. If your spouse is so bothered that they cheat on you, they're the jerk, not you. Women including your wives, do not exist to be attractive to you. Merci et salut.

Their ancestors have trashed this world to the point where their own children don’t even know why they’re fucked up. We’re fucked up because of the unethical principles that were enforced so long ago. So now, white people today only know of themselves being the standard. Because their ancestors made it so they remain there. Many don’t even know when they’re singling someone out or being inappropriate because they literally have no other thought in their minds than “I am the norm and ‘they’ (BIPOC) are ‘Others’. Therefore, they are to be studied like an exhibit. It’s pretty enraging, to say the least.

Every time I look at my natural hair, the parts that won’t grow I’m reminded of that very sad and painful time in my life. It been a real challenge feeling beautiful without make up and wigs. At the same time I want/need to embrace how and who I am in a natural state. I too want to step into who I am.

It is hard being an African American woman and having people criticize us because our hair isn't straight and in order...you try to do something with our tangled and really curly and tight hair patterns. Until you step in our shoes and can not just wake up and have straight hair then don't judge. That is why a lot of African American women are going back natural instead of following the way society says we are suppose to look with straight hair. Those relaxers do burn our scalps lol. I LOVE BEING ALL NATURAL AND HAVE CURLY BEAUTIFUL HAIR!!

AMEN! TO THAT! 😊 Grateful to say that God brought me into the reality just before the recent wave of everyone else. March 2007 my eyes 👀 opened and I made the conscious decision to let go of that false sense of self. My hair was permed and 21 inches long. I told my hairdresser to "cut it all off" it was her masterpiece. She thought I was just going through a phase. She convinced me to cut a little at a time because she said I might wake up the next morning traumatized. Each week, I ✂️ 💇‍♀️ a few inches after a wash. By the time I saw 2 inches of new growth (natural), I couldn't tolerate straight hair any longer. I cut the last 10 inches off at work, after taking a shower and washing my hair post working out at the gym. I remember clearly how I felt and what I saw in the mirror. I felt free. I realized I was in bandage of what I grew to believe "beauty" was. It felt like my body took a deep refreshing breath. My natural 😍 hair was so beautiful! and so was my face. I discovered right then that I have major "shrinkage" (tight coily hair). When I combed it out, that 2 inches was really 5-6 inches. When friends and co-workers saw me they thought that I was depressed and "let myself go" some even offered to pay for me to get a perm (🤔They were "black" females. Wow, thinking back at how delusional they were makes me smile with empathy 😊). I gotta share this on my FB. I love me som Viola. Thank you for the reminder.

It's actually so amazing to see Viola in this new look after having ''stepped into who she is,'' as she has said. I truly believe that she looks so much more beautiful with her new and natural hairstyle. I feel the same way, but the natural hair is so time-consuming, I'm only able to sport my natural (hair) look every now and then, but I'm confident that with time, I'll find a way that will work for me to make it feasible. There's just been so much real and natural beauty we've been hiding over the years.
