    Most of us who were buying and listening to prerecorded music in the 1980s were thrilled to embrace the CD format. We bought CD's and recorded them to cassettes for the pleasure of listening to a decent quality copy in our cars. Then as in-dash CD players became affordable cassettes became historical artifacts. (That's sad because I really miss my Techinics cassette deck). Then in 2004 I hopped on the streaming train (Rhapsody). As Spotify became the dominant service I migrated over to them. Sometimes when the audio quality on Spotify is lacking on a certain album I'll find a better sounding version on another service. And yes, I listen to full albums on Spotify. I still own a turntable and even replaced the cartridge last year. But it's been sitting on the shelf all year feeling neglected. Music is the main thing. Enjoy it in whatever format works best for you.

    What makes music sound good is not the format but rather the production of the music and the equipment you play it on like you said. I will note about you liking CDs at the end though, they are in a weird place for me. Either I want the convenience of digital and stream or I want the physical and engaging quality experience of my records and choose those. CDs are in the middle ground which gives me neither of the desired aspects completely. The only time I do buy them is when there is no physical vinyl of music I like. Great video though, earned my sub ;^)

  • @MicTheSnare

    @MicTheSnare

    That's interesting, because that same middle ground is why I like CDs so much. You have the benefits of physicality (artwork, liner notes, actually holding it), plus the benefits of convenience (portability, conversion to WAVs or mp3s). I appreciate your perspective, though; the way CDs occupy the middle ground (and how they incorporate aspects of physical and digital) may be perfect for some and inferior for others. Thanks for commenting and subbing!

  • @Spazza42

    @Spazza42

    I get the CD issue, but at the time it was a leap forward and the only realistic way to take your music with you. It was a perfect format for portability, it's just it was made redundant before it had a chance. The rise of the internet and computing gave us free, easy access to music and mp3 compression. As soon as CD players became truly portable, MP3 players were a thing and the iPod had been released. There's no competition in terms of quality though, 16bit lossless will always been superior to MP3 but convenience sells. Just look around at things now, everything is offered as a streaming subscription. You don't own anything other than an account that grants you access until you stop paying. Even digital downloads suffer from the *own* it problem. Sure you "bought" an album that's tied to your account, but you're still at the mercy of the provider keeping that file available online for you to red-download should you ever need to. Of course you can back things up on hard drives or USBs but storage dies eventually and when you lose it, it's gone. The same ridiculous issue is happening with bluetooth audio at the moment. There are loads of "HiRes" Music sites and streaming services, yet smartphones don't even come with a headphone jack anymore. People are spending hundreds of £'s on Hi-Res music and "hi-fidelity" headphones (I'm looking at you, AirPods "Max") yet all their music is being crunched to 300kb/s. Even Sony's LDAC bluetooth codec only gets to 900kb/s. A wired connection is far superior. Period. For reference, CD's 16bit is roughly 1,400kb/s. 24bit "HiRes" audio is AT LEAST 2,300kb/s but usually 4,600kb/s or higher.

    I would say the goal of recorded music is for other people to hear it, "it" being what you hear. Therefore, whatever more accurately transmits that information would accomplish that task better, if only on an infinitesimal level. Now the goal of LISTENING to music is for enjoyment, and if you enjoy digital music, than there truly is nothing better about vinyl vs digital in that regard. However, considering the basic difference in analog vs digital, it beseeches me to say that the most accurate was of recording music that we've discovered is neither vinyl nor cd, but 2 inch wide tape, which is the master that a vinyl is recorded from. To my knowledge, nothing truly is a more accurate representation of recorded music and therefore accomplishes the point of recording music the best

    I bought some albums on vinyl that were remastered and rereleased for their anniversary. I just treated myself to a turntable last week for my birthday. A halfway decent one. Not real high end, but not cheap. My receiver was an older receiver with true phono support. The albums I listened to were ones I originally listened to on vinyl when they were released, and have only listened to on CDs since the 80s when I got my CD player and abandoned vinyl. I was wowed by the sound. Almost all of these comparisons between vinyl and CDs I see on youtube lack one thing.... someone actually listening to the two and saying which one they enjoy more. What I've found is that depending on the music you are listening to, vinyl can have a more lifelike sound than CDs. There's a subtle difference, but it's an amazing difference. It's the same reason HD discs I have sound better than CDs, even though "engineers" say that there should be no discernible difference. I hear a difference and like it.

    For me, both are very practical for certain objectives. (Vinyl) Records, to me, are best for sound, while CDs are best for portability. I have multiple albums in my collection that are on both formats, giving me more ways to listen to them, whether that's staying at home or going on a car trip. Digital files of those albums are things I don't have in my collection, but I don't think buying Sgt. Peppers on iTunes would be as different as the CD. My methods for listening to these albums might be very unpractical to some, but it's for the fun of it. Both formats are great in their own ways.

    I like vinyl for how it forces you to engage with the record in the order it was intended, with Dark Side of the Moon being where I (and presumably a lot of people) realised this. But to give another example, the 4-disc 45rpm 10-inch box set of Thundercat's "Drunk" also has you being more proactive with changing the sides and discs over, which I think helps with familiarising yourself with the album's layout. Well, that and the packaging is amazing.

    I recently got rid of all of my records…in the weeks leading up to that I tried so hard to convince myself that digital was going to be just as good if not better than vinyl. In some cases I found digital to be equal to vinyl but mostly I preferred the vinyl. The ultimate thing is the quality of the recording and the mastering. I find that generally vinyl gets a little more effort put into the mastering which makes it sound better. But if the same mastering was done on both the vinyl and cd versions it would be hard to choose.

  • @4034miguel

    Mastering is the important point here. The worst sounding disc I have is a CD, the best sounding disc I have is a CD. So it is the capturing and mastering of the sound. I could finally listen to the title track without that distortion when it was transferred to CD.

    As a recording artist who has a degree of Jazz Piano and has been producing music since the age of Amiga 500 on the computers ,seeing this discussion still amazes me. I am a big tech and science nerd as well. And I believe in the scientific method of experimenting observing coming up with a hypothesis at the end to be tested also by others to see the final conclusive result. The technical facts are there and you can not argue with them. A vinyl could never sound better if the main value we compare is how real does it sound to the real thing which is the mastered tape or computer file we have at the studio. That is if we use the same particular system to test both medium formats. Nostalgia factor and the listening rituals are different subjects and they are irrelevant if the main discussion here is the quality of the audio . Nothing can sound better with less dynamic and separation range on the same system. If somebody claims that, either they have a bias towards that particular style of sound with crackles and distortion or they are fooled by the placebo effect . Because a person could prefer and say it sounds better knowing that crackling sounds and sound peaks happen only on a Vinyl Format just to justify their belief system even on a blindfold test. I mean, come on guys! a technology which the recording was invented on can not surpass 160 years of advancements on recording and listening technology . My own opinion: There is more warmth in vinyl records; The excitement is there because vinyl brought back the days when I used to go to record bars and buy new released albums of my favorite artists and not just downloading it from the net; They are so sensitive and requires discipline because you need to make sure that the groove is clean, you should be gentle when you manually drop the needle (and I like to do it myself), and even removing it from the sleeve requires care. So with that being said, it teaches self-discipline and you are beginning to love music the way it should be because of these rituals; And I already experienced having cassette tapes, CDs, and downloading songs from the net. Vinyl format is new to me and I want to try it. It's probably the last format that I would embrace. I mean I can see myself from the near future as an old man sitting in my backyard with a cup of coffee, my vintage console stereo set up on my side listening to the vinyl records which I have collected during my younger days.

    Your summary at the end hits it perfectly. For example, I went to a concert last night and the singer announced that he had worked on a project that he never released, but that there were copies available at the merch booth. I walked over and discovered that there were only vinyl records available, and no CDs. When I got to the front of the line, there were a bunch of records available, but there also happened to be ONE signed vinyl. I like cds better for many of the reasons you named. On Carly Simon's Best Of album and Hotcakes lp, "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" is the last song on that side of the lp. The end of the song is extremely busy with percussion, strings and woodwinds. I had a good turntable/cartridge setup but I noticed on the cd copy the sounds are a bit easier to distinguish. I've noticed this on many songs that were placed last on a side of vinyl vs the cd copy.

You can really blow them away by playing a digitally mastered album released on vinyl through a Hi-Fi audiophile system!

And don't tell me I need a better system, my speakers and amp alone are $10K. Apple now streams in lossless and Tidal has for years. It may have been dominant in the past, but unless you're listening to burned CD's from 20 years ago, most likely you are listening to something damn near close to lossless.

    All music recording and playback mediums have their pros and cons. None are perfect. With vinyl, the problem is that many people have not either bought a good enough turntable, or yet learned the skill needed and/or have the time and patience to set up a vinyl replay system properly. Turntable setup is a skill to be mastered where one needs to understand some basic mathematics (i.e. geometry and measurements), physics (resonance and vibration), and use manual dexterity to set up the turntable motor unit, tonearm, and cartridge correctly. I have been using it for 34 years and have learned much about vinyl replay setup in that time. When set right and all the above factors are carefully executed you will see why it has a sound quality that even in 2019 CDs and digital downloads still struggle to match. Pops and clicks are almost non-existent on a clean LP, and once the main musical signal is picked up by the cartridge, the music overpowers any groove noise. Furthermore, most people have never heard what really is in the vinyl groove because few people invest in a good enough turntable/arm/cartridge and pre-amp to hear what a well recorded vinyl record is capable of. iPhones now cost £1000+ but I would challenge anyone to buy a turntable for the same price, especially a vintage one like Thorens/Linn/AR/Systemdek/Denon/Technics/Sony/Pioneer etc, and compare it to their digital downloads. You will be surprised at just how powerful and realistic the vinyl medium is in comparison. It is still far more advanced in many ways than most modern digital formats because of the precision engineering that went into its research in the past, and even in some respects the present. This is why it still holds its own today. Don’t judge vinyl by a Croxley, or cheap £100 or $100 turntable. You need to invest in a quality turntable to hear what vinyl is really capable of. From a Rega Planar 2, Dual CS-505, or Technics SL 1200, Thorens TD 166 level upwards is a base standard in my reckoning. Any modern turntable that can playback music through a cartridge at the levels these machines are capable of and upwards one should be aiming for. Notice I have not said it is superior to digital, but that it can hold its own against any digital format as it, as well as the tape medium, follows the path closest to natural science than the digital playback format.

    "When set right and all the above factors are carefully executed you will see why it has a sound quality that even in 2019 CDs and digital downloads still struggle to match" that sentence alone means that you think the audio quality is superior to the digital ones despite the scientific facts and evidence show on the contrary . The dynamic range and right left separation is less and it adds some distortion sounds whatever system you use which were not supposed to be there because the way you supposed to hear it is the way it was recorded. So please can you elaborate on that statement I am curious what makes you think that Vinyl sounds better. Have you ever tried a blindfold test with a cd and a vinyl of a particular recording ??? It is same with the 256kb mp3 file vs lossless CD format . Humans are not capable of telling the difference on those formats. Because average humans dont actually hear more than 17k hertz frequencies nor lower than 20 hertz. unless you are a super human baby ;) This guy is right on the money when he says it makes you feel attached to the music more and so on because of the requirements you need to do while listening and feeling connected to a community who enjoys nostalgia ... Digital came out because of the imperfections of this recording format not because people were bored...

    Take an example at 20KHz, DIgital to Analog converter produces square wave which requires low pass filter to "convert" the square wave to sine wave. This make me think of those cheap 12V DC to 110V or 220V AC inverter. This cheap inverter operate at 50Hz or 60Hz square wave, and so it output 110V or 220V AC square wave at 50Hz or 60Hz that requires lowpass filter to smooth out the wave to make it more like sine wave but never able to achieve pure sine wave--it is called modified sine wave.

    the only real debate regarding cd vs lp is whether analog is better than digital. and that depends on your listening preferences and hearing. pretty much subjective opinion. otherwise cd wins hands down. no crackling pops orskips with cd. when an issuearises its usually surface smudges which can be easily cleaned. no wear factor with laser vs needle wear on lps. repeated playback has no effect on cd as opposed to lp. cds can easily be played in a portable setting. a walkman or car cd player. the lp would have to be put oin a file or in earlier times on tape. compareable liner notes and graphics. often much better on cds. both collectible on hands media. cd is the last of the handson collectible media. storage is a no brainer. 1000 cds can easily be stored on bookshelves. try that with lps. need a room dedicated to shelving and crates. everything has to be considered in a cd vs vinyl debate. besides sound, portability,durability,collectability,and storage. it never got better than cd. the vinyl resurgence is mainly down to 2 factors. nostalgia with older collectors and longing for a past format they never experience firsthand with younger collectors.

You aren't going to discover additional detail in a 44.1kHz@16-bit WAV file by converting it to FLAC. The only thing you'll accomplish is making a larger file. This used to be up for more debate back when digital media players were so underpowered that they were using decompression cheats to play WAV and MP3 and inducing digital artifacts during playback, but for modern cell phones, this is a non-issue.

    Some good stuff in this video. One thing I would mention when discussing DACs is how they can also change the overall sound and stereo imaging. We did a shootout at a very prestigious world famous studio in Hollywood between brands like Benchmark, Bryston, Apogee, Avid, Lynx, etc. I knew the quality or algorithm used to code/decode an analog signal could change ther sound, but I was shocked to hear just how much it messed with it. The Bryson for instance opened up the stereo image, but was less punchy and a little less defined due to phasing. In contrast the Benchmark had a more narrow stereo image, but was punchier and definitely more defined (you could hear the separate bass and kick drum). The Lynx sounded bright but crisp and clear on the high end frequencies. Etc etc. Regardless, between vinyl and CD, neither is better, they are just different.

If it was just one, maybe, but all of them were different. It shocked me as well, because I always assumed the AD could be different but the DA should be fairly transparent. It just wasn't the case. It was in what I think they called the production suite sho it was a little smaller and more controlled sounding room. All the DACs were sent direct output signals via switching in the DAW, so no switches or devices that could influence the sound were between the output of the digital recording and the DAC itself. Everything wad played back through the same stereo bus, amp, and speakers.

    @@StringerNews1 obviously I expected you to understand that a CD has a digital file on it. That digital file is, in fact, mastered for the CD'S limited physical characteristics. For example, you have limited space on a CD so the file needs to fit.

    @@CatDadChris no, there are no files on CD-DA. An audio CD has no filesystem. No, there are no physical limitations that require messing with the content. A CD is not a record. A Red Book CD holds 74 minutes of stereo sound. It doesn't matter what the sound is, the same number of bits are used. A CD album is made to be no longer than that; there's no fudge factor. Obviously I can't accept ideas that are just plain wrong. You need to understand that this isn't an "alternative facts" thing, there's only one reality here.

    @@StringerNews1 yeah you are right. I shouldn't have responded when I just woke up. That said, a cd is still mastered and an album can sound better/worse between different releases. So how would you like me to express that in the future. Do I need to say Mixing/mastering?

    @@CatDadChris One thing that's important is knowing what mastering is, and what isn't mastering. Mastering is preparing a master copy that's used to mass produce many copies. Because it's a physical process (stamping), the positive and negative copies wear out, and new ones must be made. Vinyl records start out by cutting a lacquer disk that gets plated to become the master from which mothers and stampers are made. CD mastering is similar, but the recording is digital, so metadata like the TOC and CD Text must be generated in valid form, then the data and metadata are combined, then modulated to make a bit stream that has added error-correction data. This bit stream is painted onto a glass substrate with a laser. There's no playing of audio or tweaking levels or EQ for CD mastering like there is for record mastering, it's not needed and not part of the process. Whenever someone writes "mastering" in a discussion of "sound" and CDs, I know that there's a fundamental understanding, because nothing in the CD mastering process affects the recording itself. Bits are bits, and if they can be read, you hear stuff, if not you hear nothing. There seems to be a myth that mastering is something other than making the first physical piece for mass production, and that "sound quality" is somehow changed. That's not true. All of the recording, mixing, processing etc. should already be done. Sadly there are some people who aren't part of the record or CD mastering process, but call themselves "mastering engineers". These people take money from artists or record companies to do post-production work on finished recordings. Sometimes there's a need to touch up a "blah" recording, but too often these people lack the skill to do anything helpful, and they make the recording worse. Record companies used to do something called "sweetening" often without the consent or knowledge of the artist. This practice was always sleazy, and it's only gotten worse as musicians know less about recording and fall victim to scams more easily. They call what they do "mastering" but if there's no master physical copy of a record or CD being made, it's not an unnecessary step that could have been done in the studio if really needed. I'd call the process of laying down tracks, mixing them together, adding effects and laying out singles to make an album "recording". The process of making physical discs, including making the master one, mastering, is manufacturing. What I'd call anything in between would depend on exactly what's being done. These days premastering need not be done at the CD factory. That step can be done between recording and manufacturing.

    I Listen to both. If the vinyl is well recorded, from original analogue, good quality tapes, I go for it. If the recording is digital, I buy CDs. Stream, I mainly use to hear new music, new artists. The albums I like, I buy. Regardless of format.

    @@KRAZEEIZATION dynamic range can be compared, but it doesn't depend on bits. CD is "too clear", too cold, too sterile, too bright. specially if it's mixed all brickwalled. on vinyl they can't mix like "loudness wars" because of the limitations of the format, so ironically a vinyl version could come from a more dynamic master and sound better than the CD master.

    In my opinion, the theoretical advantage of CD is for the most time not noticeable. They are so close, so the difference lays in convenience. The vinyl do color the sound in a way that some people prefer. But as you say. This debate has no meaning after all.. Cheers
