The glossy areas in the booklet are done by "spot varnishing" - clear ink areas that are over printed on each page.

I think this particular box set is for any Bruce Springsteen fan who wants better LP pressings of his earlier work. I bought a copy of Nebraska in 1982, and the vinyl was really lacking. Later I bought the CD. The CD was, not a great digital mastering, but it escaped the flaws of the vinyl copy I had. So, when this box set was released in the CD format, I bought it without a second thought. I sold my existing CDs on ebay and found the new copies to have much improved audio maastering. I suspect the same sort of thing may have happened to someone who played his original vinyl copies into dust and just needed to replace his vinyl. Here are 7 Springsteen albums in one spot. To buy a copy, is just a no brainer.

I agree with your verdict. It's the same for album's like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours or the Eagle albums. I'm sure they sound great, but so do the multi-million selling originals. And at $30.00 a pop, I cant figure out who they are pressing these for.

Mitchell Koerner I haven't heard it but considering they spread it out over four records instead of three like on the orig vinyl release, I think that's a good thing. Give those songs some room to breathe. I would love to own a vinyl copy but original pressings are around $300, too much for me, so maybe I'll pick up the 2012 reissue.

Have you listened to Tunnel of Love, the follow up to Born in the USA? It's his most underrated album and most consider it his last great one, also his most personal album as well as mellow and it has really subtle country inflected synth ballad melodies that are beautiful and melancholic. Try "all that heaven will allow" if you haven't listened to any of it but most people leave it off their bruce collection collection thinking the artwork is a bit cheesy and that it might not be as good as his earlier output. Good review- the only album that really needed any remastering was probably the river!

Frank's Wild Years Yes, I have listened to it. I'm sure it has more to do with it being a follow up and people were expecting Born in the USA2 and he gave the something very different and so it was written off too early. I enjoyed it for sure. I heard there are issues with how The River was recorded that can't be fixed. Don't remember the details

Vinyl Rewind Great, I'm glad you enjoyed it! and the reasons you said are all pretty true, although the album and its singles actually did fare pretty well on the charts- I think the opinion's been more developed in retrospect as its been more hurt and hidden by the success/ classic status of his earlier output than actually at the time it came out- I just got the nebraska reissue alone but was blown away by the clarity- however it's better and cheaper to find older copies in light of the pricing

Frank's Wild Years It's funny because I feel that Born In The USA is a separate period than everything that came before it. I get why it's included but tonally and sonically, it feels different to me. I wonder, is the Nebraska reissue the same mastering as the one in the box set?

I know this is three years old now, but I felt I had to show my experience with the collection. Although my turntable isn't one of the best, it's good enough for my uses and I already had all original pressings of these albums. I feel the new records really clean it up, especially 'Darkness' and 'Nebraska' and do uncover subtleties that I had never noticed before through both my original pressings and CD versions. My only gripe with this is the price, although I only paid £88 for mine (new, shrink-wrapped), and the omission of 'Tunnel of Love' which in my opinion is his greatest album and gives way to a second era of his music which should have been the Second Collection, which has now been released and is wayyyyy too expensive. For the price I paid, it was worth it, but I wouldn't have paid more than £150 personally.

Hey Eric, I loved this critique. I've been an avid Springsteen fan since childhood. Original releases of his records were some of the first I sought when I got back into vinyl collecting. I'd definitely also say that Darkness and Nebraska also rank up there in the top 2 for me, out of his entire catalog. The storytelling on those two, Darkness in it's grandiose manner loaded with Biblical references (Adam Raised a Cain), and Nebraska with stark, raw, stripped down portrayal of the darker side of the human condition are by far superior to anything else he has done before or since. (Barring the inclusion of a few songs here and there.) I appreciate the honesty with this review. To be honest, I really doubt I would spent even close to that much money on a boxed set like this, despite my Springsteen fanboy status. I, too, am sometimes perplexed as to why the hell record companies re-issue, multiple times, copy after copy of the same repackaged material. How much money does a label need? How much of this is Bruce really getting? How much does he really need? There were also re-releases of his studio works on Record Store Day of this year. My only reaction was, "WHY??!!" Especially since you can easily find the original releases, with similar, if not better sound quality at a fraction of the price of the RSD release. At any rate, this was a really entertaining video. I love the channel. Keep up the good work.

Nathan Bouchard I really like how he infuses car culture into his songwriting on those albums. The way he handles it stands in sharp contrast to bands like The Beach Boys. It's interesting because all the copyrights are to Bruce Springsteen, not to Columbia (or who ever owns that IP). I assume he owns all his recordings now, so by that assumption, he's making all the money on these reissues. Also, as far as I know, you can purchase some of these albums (same mastering) separately, but it's not very clear like in the case for the RSD releases. In my research I found forums that said most of the CD versions where done back in the day with less than stellar results. So it makes sense to remaster them for CD and to buy those releases/box set. I really think the remastering was done for the CD release and because vinyl is "so hot right now", they decided to put out a vinyl release

Vinyl Rewind Very good point about the contrast in car culture between The Boss and The Beach Boys. It's as if, having grown up through the late 1960's, and having seen all the idealism of the hippie generation and 1960's surf generation dissipate with the end of the Viet Nam war, Springsteen countered the Beach Boys youthful optimism, most openly expressed in songs like "409" and "Fun, Fun Fun", with his own realization that youth is a finite thing. "Racing in the Street" and "Born to Run" are both textbook cases of Bruce realizing that his youth is gone and all you can really live for is the present moment. You're not promised tomorrow, so make the most of everything you have now.

Once again a fantastic honest review.. My friend has this and have listened to a few of the albums "remastered" I am a "Hardcore" fan.. The new "remasters" sound compressed to my ears, it's probably why you didn't hear much difference.. I own all the originals in NM condition and for IMO the only way to go is with Original pressings in NM condition.. Sure these new vinyls are not going to have surface noise, but life as a whole has surface noise and adds to the whole vinyl experience IMO.. Obviously there is a level where surface noise becomes annoying and unlistenable, i won't keep vinyl that does this.. if you don''t want surface noise buy the cd's..

Hey, I liked the video, although I respectfully disagree with your assessment. There is a notable difference in the sound between the old and the new records. This is especially true in Greetings and The Wild. In The Wild, for example, you can hear clap hands and other percussion instruments that were hidden in the old records. The way I would describe these remaster records is like they have been 'dusted off.' Born to Run and Darkness were already mastered before, and most fans bought those remasters. Nebraska and BITUSA are also two examples where the remaster here makes a huge difference. For me, Born in the USA, being the newest of them all, probably gave me the biggest surprise. The experience of listening to this remaster edition is hard to express in words. I kind of agree that $150 is kind of a steep price for most people, and that makes it mostly a product for hard-core fans. It is also my understanding that Bruce has many (like MANY!) hard-core fans, so the production team of this set took that into consideration for sure. Again, I like your video, the production of it is very clean and professional, and you look like Chris Isaak (if I may say...). Thanks for sharing!!!

Here is an interview with the legendary Bob Ludwig about the remastering of this catalog for both CD and vinyl and talks a little bit about the Plangent Process, but doesn't really reveal what it is other than saying that it provides "tape playback to sound closer to the output of the mixing console than ever before. It yields better separation, less distortion and a solidity to the sound that can be really remarkable." backstreets.com/remasters.html It's been long discussed that the original mix particularly on The River was bad, and he talks a little about it here. The issue was that The River was mixed and mastered in the early days of digital, so no one had mastering consoles that were full digital, so the last A > D transfer was done somewhat divorced from the rest of the mix and mastering (if that makes any sense). These days, most consoles are full digital, so you have a better idea of the sound of the output early in the mastering process. You *should* be able to hear a difference between an original press of The River and this new one based on this, though I was never too upset about the mix having heard it the original way dating back to the cassette version. As you point out, the vinyl is mastered from digital sources as a result (as is the Beatles Stereo Box, though the Mono box is from tape masters). The major labels aren't interested in paying for remastering twice, so they make as good a digital version as they can to support digital formats and then take those to vinyl. If one is a purist, this is not good, but the fact of the matter is that very few recordings are done fully digital anyway these days and a good D > A conversion is not discernible from a strictly digital source, and in many cases can sound better than the CD because of the "warmth" imparted by the distortion of analog (a discussion and debate for a later time). I guess the importance of this box is really as the announcement of the new masters. They probably didn't create many of these boxes so it is strictly a collector's thing. These LP's are now back in current circulation for those that are interested in getting fresh copies. I'll stick with my original LP's. For what it's worth, I collect the U.S. Capital pressings of the Beatles catalog and don't own those box sets either. With so many really clean copies of these artists available for reasonable prices, if you're willing to dig through used bins, you're be better off getting used copies of the originals.

Mike Roeder Hi Mike, thanks for the link. I didn't see it before my review. But like you said, he doesn't reveal too much. I think I would need to be there in person and hear the tapes played back through an old machine and then through the Plangent Processes. As far as the River, I think it was how it was recorded. I really didn't hear that much of a difference. It still feels very narrow to me, if that makes sense. I guess I was expecting more of a difference, like night and day difference. For me, if it was made in the analogue world, keep it there, why add the digital step. But if it's a modern recording, done in the digital world, I don't mind and I'm grateful for the vinyl copy. My ears aren't that good. Besides, music is gonna sound different whether it's in your car, or on your home setup, or through headphones. And it could all be the same CD Yeah I really feel this was made for the Baby Boomers with too much money and can't be bothered with hunting down NM original pressings. I just wish they were more clear that you can buy these remastered albums outside of this box set. Smart move, hang on to those original LP's, same with the Beatles albums. Although, once you experience those original UK pressings, it's hard to go back. There's something very special about them.

  • @mikeroeder

    @mikeroeder

Vinyl Rewind Sort of Off Topic, but yeah, the remastering of the Beatles catalog "formalized" the fact that the UK EMI versions are "canon" (to steal a sci-fi fanboy term). And, in fact, they would be exactly what the Beatles had intended when they released their albums (although there is a lot of documented account that they didn't really care enough for the stereo masters to bother being there for those). I guess I'm inordinately fascinated by the alternative reality of the Beatles catalog presented by the US Capitol releases. The BLATANT disregard for the The Beatles' desired sequencing of tracks and even whole releases in order to maximize the number of albums released up until Sgt. Peppers is impressive in hindsight. Add in the mucking about with re-channeled stereo and slathering of reverb, and it is a case study of the evils of business over art mandated by the labels in the US. I was born in '68, so I wasn't old enough to appreciate the Beatles when they were around, but growing up all of my Beatles LP's given to me in the late 70's and early 80's were the US Capitol releases which weren't really even pulled from production until the 1987 CD releases based on the EMI catalog. I can't help but identify with all of the US fans in the 60's whose exposure to the Beatles were through compilation releases like "Beatles '65" and "Yesterday and Today" and didn't have easy access to the EMI catalog. And, they really don't all seem like thrown-together releases to me. If you compare the Capitol Rubber Soul to the EMI release you find an album with a different feel to it-- in the US they tried to make more of an electric folk album-- capitalizing on the Byrds success. Here's a post I made to my blog about a "restoration" of a Capitol Rubber Soul project where I talk about this more in depth: www.playbsides.com/?p=3423 I think if I stumbled upon the 60's EMI releases for a decent price I'd buy those, too.

  • @VinylRewind

Mike Roeder I get that and in today's world, the Capitol releases would never have existed. But I don't think they should be ignored and for a lot of US artists, they were inspired by those versions e.g. Brian Wilson. Do you know where it's documented what the Beatles thought of their releases? A lot of people tell me they were present for the mono mastering, the song placement, etc but I've never come across that info. I could very well be wrong, but I feel like that isn't true for their first albums, just based on my knowledge of how the industry works. I really question how much say they had on their first album for example. At that point they were just another band and George Martin knows best kind of thing. But again, I could be way off base.

Vinyl Rewind As someone who considers himself kind of a journalist, I need to be really careful about citing my sources for stuff. I realized when you asked it, that I was really quoting what I remembered reading as opposed to referring to sources. :-) Here is another blog that addresses this exact issue, and quotes from the insanely expensive, but very essential work documenting the Beatles releases done by Mark Lewisohn. www.thebeatlesrarity.com/2015/02/12/asknat-concerning-the-beatles-own-preferences-on-their-mono-vs-stereo-catalog/ The fact of the matter is that Stereo in consumer recordings was by-and-large considered kind of a fad initially-- maybe a little like Quad was later. Few people had stereo hi-fi's, certainly not on AM radio where the bulk of Top 40 lived, so it was imperative to get the mono mix right. So, the whole vinyl fanboy "mono is the better version" is couched in the fact that more effort was spent on the mono releases in the early days for this very practical reason-- aside from Brian Wilson, who actually had a hearing problem in his right ear and as such preferred monaural. As an interesting aside-- the Quad mix of Dark Side of the Moon was done by Alan Parsons with none of the rest of Pink Floyd around. Even at that time, Quad held the same "fad" status that stereo initially did. So, when they wanted to do a DVD-A/SACD 5.1 "surround" version of Dark Side of the Moon in 2003 they went back to Parson's quad mix for reference which was deemed not suitable for use. Parsons in an interview around this time stated that he did the Quad mix entirely by hand in one session, manually panning things around, somewhat as a toss off. They didn't ask Parsons to come back (much to his chagrin) to create the new surround version, choosing to use their standard engineer Jim Guthrie instead. “I did the mix very quickly. If I’d known that the record would sell in its millions, then I would’ve insisted on having more time. There’s stuff missing from the quad mix. I just didn’t have enough tape machines in the studio to get it all in. The quad was a compromise; I have no problem admitting that fact. I did it single-handedly without automation. But the feel of that mix is pretty exciting. Conceptually, it wasn’t so wrong that I shouldn’t have had a crack at the surround mix.” www.pinkfloydz.com/darksidesandv.htm Incidentally, the original tapes for the quad were leaked around this time, and some enterprising individual digitized them and made a 4.1 DVD-A of it and shared it on the internet. Pretty cool thing to have in my collection.

Mike Roeder Thanks for the link. It pretty much summed up what I understood about the mono over stereo preference for the band. And depending on the release, the mono versions are usually the way to go for myself. They did some funky stereo effects on those early LPs; stereo for stereo sake kind of thing. Let me know if you ever come across sources that say how much input they had on their early LPs. Also, I would love to know what The Beatles thought of the Capitol releases, or if they even cared.

A lot of the stuff I take a chance on ends up going back to the thrift store. I don't sell too much of my stuff more due to I don't have time to sell it. But I really need to unload this box set. I'd rather have the original pressings. At this point, I have a bookshelf and a lot of my office floor full of the records. No storage unit, yet

So, you aren't really "making money" off of it, unless you are monetizing off of KZread..(don't take that personally..I see and hear the passion in what you do). I wasn't a Springsteen fan either, but, I do have a few of the Columbia label 45rpm issues of his music.... Before I could read, I selected the songs I wanted to play by the label I saw....flipping through the 45's....

wd harvey No, I'm not in the record re-sell business. I enjoy the hunt and getting deals. I don't like paying full retail unless I need an album for a review. I do monetize the youtube videos but it doesn't add up to much, especially when I add in all the time and work I put into this channel. This is certainly an outlet for me and a hobby.

Vinyl Rewind You're doing a very good job with the production as well as the information. I need to get some type of equipment to make quality videos and try to do something with the records I have, too. Of course, getting used to the camera and speaking to it would take some getting used to! LOL!!! Keep up the good work man!

wd harvey Thank you. You really don't need super fancy stuff. Just know how to light, record decent audio and have camera in focus, and takes care of most of it. The rest is just your content

I understand that, even with digitally remastering and pressing to vinyl, the sound is also somewhat altered. May as well buy the CD. Same goes for current musicians who are pressing on vinyl. They are recorded digitally, so the sound is digitally pressed. In the analogue market, it was recorded to tape and pressed to vinyl. Digitally, with compression, some of the highs and lows can't be heard and sounds kind of "sharp", not as warm. As digital sound became less experimental and more fine-tuned, the digital music started sounding better. Back in the day, CD music gave me a headache listening to it because it had such a high end. The sound was equalized as if it were going to vinyl. Now, it's the other way around. The sound is equalized as if it were going to digital, yet, they are pressing it on vinyl, which doesn't quite equal the sound of an analogue recording. Get my drift? I know that sounds a bit confusing...

wd harvey I get what you saying. The problem for me is, I don't really hear a huge difference. Maybe that's because my ears aren't sensitive enough or maybe that's because my equipment isn't the best. Either way, I'm a music lover more than an audiophile. For me, I would rather have a record with a digital download card than a CD. I love physical media but CD's (even when they were the top dog) never had the same appeal as LPs. But I do understand what you mean with new music. Very few musicians are recording to tape and even when they are, more often than not, they still digitize it so they can edit in ProTools.

I'm not, by any definition, an audiophile...I've liked to consider myself an "audiophile wannabe" more than anything else. hell, all I've got to do is go in the other room, click on the amplifier, turn on the belt drive (wish it were direct drive, but, the one I had gave out)..put on an album, and I'm in BUSINESS!

wd harvey That's how you gotta start, get the best equipment you can afford and go from there. Just curious why you place a direct drive over a belt drive?

It was what I could afford! LOL!! Most of what you can get that are readily available are belt drives anyway. Direct drives are WAY more expensive. I do like the direct drives over the belt (not as much feedback into the turntable)..I had a technic's direct drive for about 20 years or so that I bought from a pawn shop for $25, paid another $25 for a cartridge. Eventually, it wouldn't maintain the speeds and I was constantly having to adjust it. The belt drive was actually given to me for Christmas to replace the Technics. I don't really mind so much since I don't play my records every day, much less every month. There are so many, they aren't going to be terribly damaged every once in a while of playing them. Not one of them is in a higher rotation than the others. In fact, when I first started collecting, it was on belt driven record changers. The tone arms weren't very well balanced and were quite heavy. Even at that, they still sound good on other turntables. I stopped "stacking" them after a while and started playing them one-by-one. Now, for the 45rpm records, I almost wish I still had a record changer! I'd LOVE to put a stack of records on the spindle and play some of them. I'm kind of nostalgic that way.

wd harvey Interesting, I asked because from what I understand audiophile level turntables are all belt driven. Direct drive can add unwanted vibrations by being linked directly to the motor but it's more ideal in DJ conditions. Funny how record changers have skipped this current generation and really that's a good thing since you don't really want your records slamming on top of each other. But yeah, it really makes sense for 45s, so much easier to listen to.
