Thank you for keeping the Wood grain on the tops! That unique "Waterfall" look was the whole object of the style, it created an expensive look, but by using veneer, it kept the price low which was a very good idea during the Depression when it was so popular. I've been refinishing furniture for over 45 years and have only been lucky enough to find one single original Waterfall piece. Looking forward to what you do with the center section. You've got a new subscriber in me. Again thank you for sharing your art with us and please continue bringing us more beauty. ♥

Wow, Nancy! 45 years is so impressive! How strange that you have only found one waterfall piece- they pop up near me in droves! Usually with a ton of damage to the veneer, but always worth a fix. I know they were mass produced, but I just love them. I’ve done research on them, but not to the extent of the production location. I wonder if you are in a place where they weren’t as popular or didn’t produce them? Thank you for sticking around! It means a lot!

These are lovely, Taryn. I adore the paper. I especially like how they are individual pieces. They go together but they don’t match. The black and the blending and the natural wood and the paper really take these to the next level. They are beautifully romantic and they look expensive!🌸 My mom was from Barstow and we lived in Chicago so we would usually take the train (a few times we drove or flew) to Barstow and we would stay at my grandparents’ house for most of the summer. They had a cabin in Big Bear and we would go there for a week and we would go to Carpinteria to see my mom’s aunt and uncle. It was so different from where we lived in the mid-west and just seemed magical. There weren’t any cousins but my brothers and I had “summer friends” and I was reminded of all that while I watched Lucas having fun with cousins (I assume?) and being in the mountains of California. Enjoy your stay. We can be patient while you deal with limited wifi and internet access. You are always so very generous with your time and your knowledge, and we are glad you’re creating content while you’re on vacation.💖

I love that you have those memories! I hope Lucas will look back fondly of these times. It’s so cool you were in Barstow, my grandpa lived in Barstow- small world! Although he would usually come up to visit us, there wasn’t a lot to do in that town.

@@elegantupgrades no, there wasn’t but we were kids so we found things to do, as kids do. My mom and her siblings all moved away, so I think that might say something about what it offered young adults. The older I get, the smaller the world gets; but that’s wild that a gramma from the mid-west and a furniture artist in the Pacific northwest both have a connection to the same town in the Mojave Desert!😊

These Dressing tables had "Dust Proof Drawers". It is so difficult to buy well made furniture today. For the prices they are charging at the Furniture Gallery, you would think, they would have wood backing, not cardboard, have the solid wood between the drawers tops and bottoms. I am always looking for the older made furniture, so worth the time and energy so I can make it feel at home. My husband laughs at me as I am refinishing a piece, because I talk to it, I may look at it for awhile, until I can see what it needs to feel at home. What kind of weird things do you do, as you are refinishing a piece of furniture? I love how they turned out!

Lovely outcome but I had to giggle at the beginning as my mom had a vanity very similar! and yes it was basically impossible to push a chair under it!!! and then Montgomery Ward-that thing was ancient...

I know! It was shorter than a bench seat when I sat on it 😂 And yeah, I’m keeping the tag with it. I always think it’s fun to find things like that.

Taryn! Thanks you for using the putty in two layers. Now my question is, do you think it can be layered more than that? I have a little shelf 6” x 18” 6” deep with a HEART cutout. I don’t want to use Bondo. I was thinking of duct taping the heart bottom and pouring in some Durham’s (I wasn’t thinking of layer but that sounds like it would work better). The wood is probably 1/2” thick. I love these 2 nightstands!

I can’t see why you wouldn’t be able to layer more than that. I’ve done several layers before- just not with the thin/pouring technique. I’m not a fan of bondo either.

Taryn, love your stuff, so exactly to my own taste. A question - you announced that Zazzle were going to make your designs available, can you tell me what name/source they are listed under? Would appreciate that so much. Regards Marian

I love that they’re matching nightstands but not toooo matchy matchy. Is that a word? Lol! Do you have to take a lot of tools to your parent’s place to work? If I tried to do anything at mine I’d have to improvise big time. We’re talking butter knives, scotch tape, and kitchen sponges. 😅

Haha! I’d be lying if I said I’ve never used a butter knife for a tool. I think they are the most universal utensil 😂 I bring a small tool kit and whatever fun stuff I want to use that I know they don’t have. But I almost always “need” something that I don’t have and yes, improvising is a must. But they have a table saw and a chop saw and quite a few hand tools. The one thing I miss the most when I don’t bring it is my pull saw. And I forgot it this time 😒

does the poly act like a shield for bleed through too? seems better than that shellack spray if so..

It does to a degree. It wouldn’t work as well as Shellac on really stubborn bleed through- say like on a mahogany, but it does the trick on the minor ones.

Love the decoupage, with the vibrant colors. Where did you get the paper from? Or is it wallpaper ? Well done!

Thanks, Suzanne! It’s from Zazzle.com. I just look up dark floral tissue paper and quite a few pop up. They have great quality papers, but shipping is a bit high and takes longer than I would like. So when I order from them, I try to order several so I have some on hand.

Wait! I forgot to ask: what’re you doing with the center piece? Also it looked like the vanity came with a stool. Are you doing anything with that?

I’m using it for my littlest sisters sewing table. She just got a machine for her birthday and needed a space to sew. And no, unfortunately it didn’t come with a stool.

Although beautiful, I love the paint and decoupage. They turned out better than I imagined. But for once, I’d like to see someone redo a vanity. I have saw somebody do 1, once before, but everybody turns them into strange looking nightstands, (not normal sized). Seems like if their too short, add legs. Those old vanities are the furniture, from my childhood, well my great grandmas had one each. I remember seeing them in lots of homes. Younger people don’t have nostalgia for old stuff…. Lol. Now as far as painting those pieces, go for it, I think the paint looks better than the raw wood. And I’m all for turning one thing into another if their in to bad shape to keep the original design. Instead of everybody following suit, it would be nice to see a change up. I imagine someone like Marilyn Monroe sitting at a vanity like that. All you need is a fluffy poof, if you don’t want to just add fancy legs. I’m not criticizing you at all, your work is amazing, I gave my opinion, and just threw an idea out there…. Lol Have a great day

Thanks, Sheryl! I’ve done several vanities and depending on the state or the style I either keep them as vanities or make them nightstands. It always depends. I can absolutely see Marilyn Monroe sitting at a vanity like this. However, times have changed and these really low ones don’t sell, unfortunately. And I’d rather they be used for many many more years because I have nostalgia for old things. But I assure you, the other vanity I have in storage will stay a vanity. It’s lovely as is and someone will love it in its current shape- with an updated finish. Honestly, my most favorite pieces are wardrobes and those don’t sell for me either. That makes me really sad. But houses have closets now and people don’t see the potential they still have. So I think it’s great that we can do what we can to keep these old pieces around for as long as possible even if that means they are taking on a bit of a different form or use. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave your insight. Thanks again!
