I was born in Ludington but had to leave in 1951 as my parents moved to California. This is exactly how I remember everything. I spent the summer of 1953 there and didn’t want to ever leave again, but that didn’t happen. Love this video, wish there were more like this.

My family rented a cottage at Twin Points Resort on Hamlin Lake every year from the 70’s into the 80’s. Wonderful vacations, I never wanted to go home!

My parents as well. They rented cottages on the lake between Ludington and Pentwater close to the Bass Lake outlet. They retired there and buried there also. My greatest memories are of vacationing in Ludington in the summer. Would love to relive those days again!

Does anyone remember how the sand dunes on the north end of Hamlin Lake looked like back then? They were so much taller and majestic compared to what you see today. Apparently the sand dunes have slid into the lake and are no longer near as tall. I wish someone could provide pictures or video of the way they used to look like. Another thing that no longer exist is all the wooden jetty shore or beach erosion structures along the Lake Michigan shoreline along the way out to Ludington State Park, time has taken its toll on them. I remember cooking hot dogs at the shelter along one of the trails by Hamlin Lake. We used to hike the old Eagles Nest trail at the park. I'm sure the trail has been renamed as Eagles haven't been in that area for years. My Grandfather had a house on the South Bayou of Hamlin lake in the early to mid sixties before our family moved to Georgia. We had a lot of fun in this area, boating, hiking, and swimming back in the day. I really miss Ludington and all the adventures it had back then. Even the Fourth of July Parade in Ludington was huge back then, with a huge fireworks show at Stearns Park at the end of the day. Ludington is no longer the wonderful beautiful sleepy little town it once was. I have such great memories of my childhood back then in this beloved part of Michigan.

What amazed me when I found this is how so much is still the same except for what has been tactfully improved. The old railroad tie steps up the dunes inside Ludington State Park have been replaced with much easier to climb well built steps with landings and hand rails, for example. Stearns Park beach now has a handicap accessible walkway out to the water, just a wooden walkway (it looks wooden, fits the scene perfectly). The beautiful front of the Stearns Hotel has been removed unfortunately, well, moved around to the side, but the main street was made 5 lanes wide. Stearns Hotel is still there and well maintained. J.C. Penney's is gone but the shops are filled with new local businesses. There's a new local harbor, new shore line parks, new improvements for the big lake ships which have switched from coal to diesel to be move environmentally friendly (umm, OK, just better than coal).

The SS Badger ferry ship that was shown in this film is still running and it is still powered by coal. I am not absolutely positive but I believe it is the only coal fired ship still sailing on the Great Lakes and maybe in US waters. It underwent a very costly upgrade of the coal firing and waste process and was granted approval by the government to keep sailing (who knows for how long though). Good to think that some of the scenes we see today were the same things they were seeing back in the 50's.

The trail shelter shown at 5:00 was on the Island trail just past the bridge at the entrance to Lost Lake. That shelter was torn down before I was born. The foundation still exists. I've always wished I could have seen it. Now I have!

its way past entrance to Lost lake... It sits at the very top (north ) end of it. 1-2 miles from entrance. You go up the hill from there9left and UP) to get to the Ridge Trail.

@@csnide6702 I have seen a foundation for that trail shelter as well. At the top of the stairs where lost Lake and Ridge Trail intersect, but I really thought the one that we saw in the video was the one down by the foot bridge on Highland Trail.

Great Video! It's nice to see how simple and beautiful Ludington used to be. Unfortunately, in recent years, it has become a "tourist haven". Condos all over the place and summer traffic and snooty tourists are terrible. It's still a nice little town, but it was so much nicer when I was a kid.

@@vintagesimplicitytractors9464 Not sure... but back then there was the City of Midland, the City of Flint, the City of Saginaw... a bunch of other car ferries to choose from. I believe that there was seven ferries at the time going back and fourth. I remember standing on the breakwall around 1964 and watching the City of Flint going by and disappearing in the dark. It was loaded with people and railcars and was creaking as it went by. My father said that was normal. We took a ride on the City of Midland to Manitowoc a couple of years later and almost missed the trip back because we were goofing around downtown.
