Poor old R2-D2 has been in so many scrapes over the years that he needs a few repairs. Not only that, he has lost the Death Star Plans. So it's time to give this vintage 12 inch Kenner Artoo a bit of a restoration, and also make him a new set of Death Star plans.
In this video I fix loose legs, damaged chrome, broken clicker, missing stickers, missing death star plans and more.

If I hadn't actually seen you making one of those Death Star plans things from scratch, I would have said it was impossible to make one of those without a 3D printer because of the rounded edges. This is by far the most ingenius thing I've seen you craft. You are a pro man. Kudos!

This video came at the perfect time for me as I had just purchased a 12 inch R2D2. I followed your steps and now mine looks much better than when I took it out of the bubble wrap a few days ago and was disappointed by all the yellowing and scuff marks that I saw. Thank you so much!

The shorter clicker makes this R2 sound more similar to his 3.75 inch version which I think is great

Amazing. I bought my R2 from a school jumble sale in '78 for 5p. My most treasured toy. He's complete, but wobbly & a bit chipped. I'll definitely be trying a few of these fixes to get him battle ready. Great video. Thank you.

The 12" figures seemed sooo expensive when I was a kid. But they were probably just a few bucks. Needless to say, I never had any. They seem like elusive treasures to me now. Love that R2 came with secret plans! Your repros look dead on in the vid.

I got an original one of these Artoo's for Christmas 1978 and kept it with me for years, lost the Death Star plans at some point and the silver on the dome had all worn off, he was well loved and played with. Years later I was at a market in the UK and a guy was selling the accompanying Threepio, but he wouldn't part with it til I convinced him I had the artoo at home. Back in 2012 both were stolen, I discovered the crime too late to recover them both.

Great job, Dave. The Death Star plans panels ended up looking fantastic.I can hardly tell they're not de-yellowed versions of the original ones! I would have tried making the curved corners with a styrene strip, but your solution seems to be much better than trying to bend those into shape (Never tried that myself, and if they would snap as you said, then I would have to find another solution to that). Everything else looks top notch. For the stickers, if you want to, eventually make two different images line up perfectly, you can set the above layer as "Difference", and when you can get everything to be completely black, then it means they're perfectly aligned.

Good stuff! I like how you kept one in a state of yellowing because as you alluded to, trundling around the Jawa-infested Jundland Wastes, searching for crazy old wizards does take a visible toll on an adventurous R2 unit. I'd definitely hold out for a nice white left leg for the other Artoo though!

I had a thought.. You might want to paint in the shot up parts on the chrome, before eventually, you have none at all. Either clearcoat the spots, till you're sure it's even and maybe even overlapping the chrome a bit. Or get fancy, color it in black, clear coat, etc.

A most excellent, and satisfying video to watch! I was very impressed with the Tamiya paint! That's a great looking match! Have you ever figured out a way to fix a broken clicker on the original 1977 3.75" R2D2 figure? I have at least three R2s in my collection with broken clickers, and you almost never see anyone selling a replacement part on eBay. When you do see them for sale, they're always overpriced. You'd be paying about the same price for a clicker as for a complete, vintage R2. I'm not sure that this lid method would work for that or not, but it might be worth trying. Would require a much smaller, thinner plastic, I suppose.

I don't have a 12" R2-D2, but you've shown some great tips and products I will find VERY handy! Thank you! Have you considered working up new additional "plans" stickers that look like actual Death Star hologram / blueprints?

Some people are going to be mad at me but I'm going to be really pedantic here, these are 13 inch figures not 12 inch. I have R2 D2, C3 P0 and Bobba Fett.

There were no vintage 12" figures. They were LARGE SIZE action figures and do not scale to 12" size very well for the most part.

You can still click the like button. You just don't see a number next to it. I don't see the benefit of having it switched on.
