Vintage Racing Go Kart Specs / Dimensions

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As our audience has grown worldwide, we have received a number of requests from outside of the United States for an idea on dimensions of some of the vintage racing go karts that were popular in the 1960s. In this video we discuss just that and more with one of our Alley Kat II's. Hopefully this will help some of you builders. If there is more interest, we will share more, let us know.

Incredible. Thank you for taking the time to film this. I was 5 yrs old when my neighbor made a kart out of angle iron in 1975. Parents wouldn't buy me one & I tried many times to build but failed. I was hooked on how something that looked so simple could be so complicated. Your kart looks fantastic. Well done, sir!

Racing Psychosis You have my respect, You make it LQQK easy, Thank You! I'm nearing the end of my first build, I'm sure glad I was a mechanic or this would have been ugly, I was way off with some of my assumptions, These spec's really guided my whole build.

my step dad gave me a vintage go kart frame. it's missing some things, kinda small... I found another frame that someone had cut the top off of but I took the front and back wheels off, and they're slightly wider than the one I got.. I can tell someone welded a place for a small motor to sit. not sure if I'm up to the task my step dad wanted me to rebuild lol. I work on mountain bikes, BMXs and built my own lowrider bike, a BMX with ape hangers, banana seat and wheelie bar lol. it's cool

If I’m hearing it right, you said you built your Gokart yourself from scratch. Would you build one for me? If so, how much would it cost me for you to build one for me exactly like the one your showing? Daniel

What kind of wheels and tires? Azusa? What length is the rear axle? Is it a 38" total with 2" x 3/4" step?

Depends on the class that you will be running. For most single engine rear karts you will be running typically a tire made by Vintage Speed, hard rubber compound to allow the narrow rear engine karts to be able to slide and the tire is a square edged tire. The 5" Dia tire size typically a 3.50, 4.10, and 4.50. For wheels, yes Azusa, 2-piece aluminum. For our dual we run modern aluminum wheels for safety reasons.

I’ve got a vintage kart that I believe is a 1970s margay but I’m not sure of the model. Is there anyway I can send you some pictures to see if you can tell?

Probably a better and quicker response would be to joint some of the Vintage Karting Facebook pages or Forums and post the pics. We are not Margay people.

We have, but we are very limited in production as we do not build during the racing season and are not really equipped to build a lot of them at a time. Currently, we have no vintage karts for sale, and no plan to build any this off-season. There are some guys out their like RobRon reproducing Rupps, there was someone building rear engine King Karts, and there still are some SAE rear engines being reproduced as well. And there are still guys doing restorations.

Steering is typically about 13+ inches. These karts typically run 5-inch wheels. For a single rear engine kart most will run 3.5 (350) series tires in the front and 4.5 (450) to 6.0 (600) series rear tires.
