I cried😢.. remember having this set✨👍🏻

OMG I am 12 years old again! The first racing set I got had the old Vibrator motors in the cars. Before the T-Jet cars came out. I remember having many of those cars. I ended up with around 75 feet of track, 22 cars and a huge assortment of parts. I remember having that owners manual with all the different track configurations you could do. The neighbor kids would bring their cars to me because they knew I knew how to repair them. THANK YOU for bringing back these precious (to me) memories. It's all long gone now.

It's never too late to start collecting again. It IS pricey, though, especially if you want original Aurora Thunderjets like in this video. They are the cars that I favor.

The EARLIEST Aurora cars. Aurora Vibrator cars. I never had them but if I could afford to I would collect THEM too. Be forewarned, though- they use a different transformer. They SUPPOSEDLY work with the later transformers but not correctly(?) but the later Thunderjets won't work with the early transformers(?)

Spent hours down in the basement with a hand-me-down set just like this that my older brothers had .That set is long gone but bought a Tyco set in the 90's just to relive my glory days and since I still had cars from the early days .....great fun still

This was a gigantic flashback!

Yes, I had allot of Aurora slot car items (track-cars) when I was a teenager back in the 1960's. They had 2 types of cars back then, first was the vibrator type cars, then they went to the faster DC motor cars. Both were fun to experiment around with and race. I setup a nice 4 lane race track on top of a ping pong table to have races with my friends. Later on I moved up to racing 1/25 scale cars on commercial built 8 lane tracks in our city. Slot car racing was a FAD back then. It came in very quickly and allot of participation in racing, and then the FAD went away and the commercial tracks went away. Note: there are still slot car racing locations going on and are much different then the 1960's-1970's type of racing we had. Just have to do a search online where those locations are and not sure how many.

That Charger needs oiled....badly. but you'll learn after you cook it..by the way, that guy in the vintage racing helmet is Sir Sterling Moss. My first set featured him on the box. It had a gray Jag 150 and a white early 60s Vette.

This was my first set-it eventually expanded to two 4X8 sheets of plywood, along with the HO trains. Wished I had kept it. So cool that this set was passed down-enjoy it with your kids and grand kids!

I agree, I had the "zero gravity" set when i was young. They had magnets on the bottom for traction but all you saw was two green blurs. Not much skill involved.

I had all that stuff! Great time to be alive. Tha ks for reviewing. And...I did do HO Santa Fe Railway crossings!!!

Used to put the lube oil on the track corners. Great drifts! Had my set about 50 years ago. Thanks for sharing.

I still have my set. It started with a blue XKE and yellow Ferarri 250 and was powered by a D cell battery pack. You controlled the speed by push button on and off. Over the years it went from a simple figure 8 to a full set 4x10 feet. A couple other cars I had were the hot rod, VW bug, Willy's Gasser, AJ's track cleaner truck and a few others. Lot's of fun when I was a kid.

Very nice set from the early 60s.One roll of thumb is don't shut it up on carpet.Because it will conduct electricity through the fibers of the carpet and burn your power pack out

Just saw an episode of American Pickers where the seller had a ton of Aurora Model Motoring slot cars. Well, it prompted me to pull mine out of a 50 year storage and relive days of old. I not only have most of the track, but many of the accoutrements that made it more exciting to fly the cars around the track, such as speed bumps, teeter-totters, spiral formations that allowed the track to spiral up a few levels, and a whole bunch more that I forgot about. Wow! What a memory! Anyway, the value of the cars is where its at. The guy on AP valued the cars at at staggering $800. I have not verified this but found that to be quite surprising. One day I will set them up again and watch my cats chase them around. Thanks for the memories!

Absolutely fantastic…..I’ve still got some cars from the 70’s thru the 2000’s, what’s cool about yours are those controllers. I’ve never seen those before…very cool 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I couldn't agree more.

Had this very track...the "debris" was lent build up, due to the shag carpet that was found in most home in those days...the oil came in a small plastic dispenser and was red...upgrades for the cars were bodies, re-wound armatures, stronger magnets, silver pickup shoes, axles, wheels and tires...Autoworld magazine was the leading "scale racing" magazine of the day..'68

I had one of those Aurora sets and my friend had one too. We combined the two sets and had a pretty good-sized raceway. It was called Mike Marsh Speedway, named after a character in the 1965 movie Redline 7000, a racing movie staring James Caan. We thought the movie sucked and the track was named in jest. We figured out which car bodies handled the best (Ferrari) and which ones seemed to handled the worse (Corvette and XKE). They even sold a hop-up kit and a hop-up gear which as I recall could be purchased separately. There was an Aurora-brand oil which was thick and red and came in a little bottle with a dropper under the lid. Turn the car over and a drop or two was put into the center hole in the chassis to lubricate the motor. Wintergreen oil made the tires more tacky. Geez, I haven't thought of this stuff in over 50 years. That service manual was a blast from the past.

We had a slew of this stuff . With Plasticville type buildings and scenery . If no slot cars were in running order , Matchbox and Husky cars ran the roads. Also there were frequent wars in Plasticville among the Arifix armies.

I got one of these sets when I was 9 in 1965. It was great! Unfortunately my family had to move in a hurry and it was lost over several moves.

That's a great piece of nostalgia right there! I used to love playing with slot cars and making different tracks with my friends. We'd get together and link up all our track pieces and make one enormous track. We'd also try modifying the cars to make them go faster and occasionally managed to do it without destroying them. But it sure was a lot of fun. Thanks for the video my friend, good stuff!

I got my first HO slot car track in the early 70's ! I still love these things, I'm hoping to build a 1/24 scale home track in the next year or two ! Great fun !

THAT WAS MY FIRST SLOT CAR TRACK. IT WAS MY DADS, AND HE GAVE IT TO ME WHEN I WAS ABOUT 6. I HAD THE TRACK AND A LIONEL TRAIN SET ALONG SIDE IT

if u haven't oiled the charger yet try taking the shell off and oil under the gear that is above the motor (that will make the motor run quiet and really good)

great video that was the first set that I had two and I still have some steering wheel controllers and the original Power Pack somewhere in the boxes and a bunch of the cars too great set

My dad bought me that exact set in the sixties ! The box is gone but i have the tract and the jag lost the Mustang ! Boughy another Mustang to replace it! Love the steering wheels still in great shape ! Thanks for sharing!

Same here! I loved that set, and I bought track after track until I filled the whole downstairs den with the damn thing. I would save up my pennies, and buy the cobblestone track, the hill track, the squeeze, and then splurge on a new car. I even bought the Batman mobile, but that thing was the slowest pos ever! It couldn't even make it up the hill track. I remember one night I just left the damn thing running, taking out my frustrations on the over-priced Batman car. The next morning the tires actually fused to the track, the brushes underneath the chassis turned black, and now I had the excuse to get rid of that dog of a slot car. I loved that set, and treated it like gold (except for the Batman car of course), and I wish I had a nickel for every hour I spent with my friends and cousins playing with that thing. Ah, the good old days....

Cool set up! OIL THOSE CAR'S, THEY WILL RUN BETTER! I RESENTLY BOUGHT A MODEL MOTORING TRACK AND 3 CARS. FOUND ON LINE CAR'S ARE WORTH ABOUT 120.$ EACH! I HAVE A BIG H O TRACK AND ABOUT 130 CAR'S! NEVER GETS OLD JUST US! EAGLE RACEWAY!

I had the Figure-8 track with the Mustang and Camaro. Got it in '68 or '69, age 5.

Fun track and cars. Thanks for sharing. Just so you know, your cars are extremely valuable. Slate Blue Jaguars go for $100 without the package. I couldn't tell what color charger that was but if it is purple it is $250-$350 in the package. And a black Camaro in the box just went for roughly $900. The car that looks like a Citroen is not Aurora. I would guess it is a Faller. Eric- you have to do a logical process of troubleshooting. 1. Plug in transformer. Touch the cars pickups to the screws on the transformer. If nothing happens, turn the axle while touching the power. If the car makes any noise, then the transformer and the car works. 2. Test all cars 3. The cars have not been run in a while, so they will need cleaning and oiling. 4. Unscrew body from chassis and carefully remove each part. I lay out a paper towel and set each part on it. Wipe oil dirt and grime off of chassis. 5. Remove any fibers from the axles or other areas 6. Use a pencil eraser to clean the armature plate 7. Rub commutator brushes on paper or an ink eraser to remove carbon buildup 8. Check pickup shoes for tarnish especially where it joins the chassis. Sand with fine grit paper to remove tarnish. 9. Oil sparingly at armature shaft hole in chassis. Pinion drive hole in chassis. Axle/chassis holes, gears. 10. Put on gear plate and check ease of movement when spinning the axle. 11. Replace comm brushes and magnets. 12. Test car again. Should run better 13. Clean track rails with ink eraser Good luck

Great comment... thanks. I had no idea the value of them. I talked to a guy at a hobby store years ago and he said the whole set was worth about $100.... Maybe it was back then. The Charger is red and the gray car is also a Jaguar E type not a Citroen. Perhaps I will post another video of details on the cars only.

That kind of squealing sound is a sign of lubrication.Whatever car is squeaking apply some oil very lightly in the center pen underneath the car between the two brushes but very little

NICE. The Charger needs oil, and they all probably need new tires.

Take them apart and oil them! Taking them apart at 10 years old. Great to see at regular speed not Tyco speeds! But yes, that scream is for oil!

About the squealing sound... I know exactly what this is. My friends and I used sets like these for years before the original AFX line was introduced, and we learned to correct this common problem. Correcting this problem requires using a special red switch lub that Aurora used to provide to lubricate the central point where the pin at the bottom of the armature seated through the bottom of the plastic chassis. A small amount of red switch lub was applied to the small hole in the center of the bottom of the chassis to lub this pin. Additionally, you could apply this lub sparingly to the bottom of the small round iron heads that sat in the chassis directly on the metal channel that lead from the shoes. These heads were positioned so that they met the metal bottom of the armature - this is how electricity was channeled from the track to the armature to move the car. The red lub came in a small plastic packet with the set, and in a small jar with applicator as a separate tune/repair accessory. This lub was red to make it easily identifiable. It was different from other mechanical oils in that it was conductive. I don't remember the first AFX cars requiring this red lub - though they may have. But it was an absolute must for the original Aurora cars. I'm not sure whether a modern equivalent of the red lub is available. But it makes sense that somewhere in modern slot car racing, a conductive lub is available. Hope this is helpful...

The Aurora Red lube was NOT conductive and you never applied it to the *brushes*. A tiny drop on the bottom armature hole and a bit on the top gears.

I've experimented with many "lubes" over the years. I even have some original red Aurora oil in the bottle. I have been using STP ATF for a couple/few years and am happy with it. As for oily brushes- just clean them with isopropyl alcohol 91% (common rubbing alcohol) and a piece of paper towel. Clean the armature comutater with it, too. In fact, clean the whole chassis with it, let dry, then oil. If you need tires for these cars "SuperTires" TJ.378" are are my favorite. They stay tight on the wheels better than anything else, get great traction, are true, and will last FOREVER. The brushes and pickup shoes are the main wear items that need replacement every so often. They are available but fairly costly. In the later 1970s and early 80s before the internet days these parts were very hard to find. Usually, toy conventions and such to find used cars for the parts. I hope you still enjoy your Thunderjets as I do.

@@mickangio16 Old brushes with decades of oil can be cleaned by placing them on the tip of a soldering iron until the oil boils out of the pores, then clean with IPA and towels. Brushes are reproduced about $1.50 pair delivered if you buy 10 pair, and shoes about $3 a pair if you buy 5 pair, although I've found shoes last nearly forever in tjets. Vibe shoes wear out quickly. Check ebay.

Send a dollar in with your registration in the slot car association & see what happens 😆

My son and I are trying to set up my old HO track from when I was a kid. The manual look like yours, but it didn't say what size and type wire to use. Somehow over the years, the wires were lost. I hooked it up with some wire (thin silver wire) that I found in the garage. It didn't work. So, I rewired with a heavier copper wire. That also didn't work. I guess it could be the cars themselves. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would check voltage at the connections to see it its getting power to the track. If so then i would disassemble the cars and clean the connections to make sure everything is working properly and if all else fails pick up some new cars to use on the track. AutoWorld has some vintage slot cars for a decent price. You can find them online.

I know it's three years later but you can put a fresh 9V battery across the car's pick-up shoes to test the motors. Polarity doesn't matter although the car will run backwards if the battery is backwards. If the cars run, the problem is most likely the transformer.

What happened to your uncle? I still have my set from the sixties and I'm not letting it go, I'm 53 now.

Its a large spotted jungle cat but in this case it refers to a British made sports car. This model is the XKE or E- type. It is actually spelled Jaguar.

I don't believe so , you will need a reostat of some sort. Im sure you could use any other slot car controller with a slight modification to the cord or perhaps a HO train controller. Be careful and have fun with it.

Electrocution means death. "Electric execution". You were not electrocuted, you merely got a small shock.

That Red '68/'69 Charger in the box with the original label is around $200, That Black Camaro in the box is worth around $325.00 That $900 figure from a previous poster for the Black Camaro is absurd and incorrect. I wouldn't be racing those two cars. Condition is everything with Aurora Thunderjets. Avoid touching the bumpers because you'll wear off the chrome. Lift the cars by their sides. That Green/Faded Turquoise Jag is an Atlas Jaguar XKE and NOT Aurora. The Slate Blue Jag XKE IS Aurora though. With the two Jags, I say.....Happy Motoring! :o) Tony K. (I am a 40 Year Aurora Collector who sold Bob Beers his first collection. He was my neighbor in West Islip, NY).

That Charger is rare

If you get it out and or are running it still, this will help you tremendously. The T-jets are basically the same as the Non-magnatraction shown on that page. There are 11 oiling points on all the Aurora pancake cars.. You must oil the 2 gear shafts going through the top plate , as well as others shown on this very nice web page. of course it's been a coupe years now, but I'm hoping and sure you know way more about what you have by now..how to service and maintain these valuable cars you have here(which you know by now of course) Never run cars that squeal like this; you'll burn them up in no time. As many said oil, oil, oil.. I'm sure you've looked on eBay and all over Google/the internet by now to find out what you have and how to get better silicone tires and on and on.. KZread also..much info

Had these as a kid. They were awful especially when compared to the competitor Tyco Slot Cars. The Aurora cars had this wacky multi gear system, that made the cars clunky and in constant need of oil. Tyco cars had a direct to axle system that made them faster. But did that stop me ? NO ! I stayed true to Aurora , collected the cars and tracks. Had hours of fun despite the fact.

I agree......I couldn't stand to listen to those poor things SCREAMING in agony to be OILED for shit's sake....and I can only imagine the heat that was coming off those chassis....

I've used many things over the years to oil my cars. For the past couple years I have been using STP automatic transmission fluid in a needle type applicator bottle. It works so well that I don't feel the need to experiment with anything else and the quart will probably last the rest of my life🙂

You need to get that off the carpet lint fats picked up under the car. PLEASE OIL THE CHASIS,!!!

Well. First, you never run anything that has moving part without oiling & lubricating them first. Thats just common sense. and..it appears you havent seen any of the comments or replied, but yes, the T-jet cars have up to 11 oiling points. The Vibrator cars, 4 or so. Otherwise you'll burn up and ruin cars worth up to and over $100 each. The Black Camaro is a $200-$300 car itself!!! The Charger is worth hundreds as well if it's orange(appears pink in the video)..

Thank you Simon. You will be happy to know that I was able to successfully oil the chassis and quiet this vehicle down as seen in the following video with the link in the description above. I also recently rescued this set from the Hurricane damage to my house. Its one of my valued items .

Buddy, those poor cars need oil! No wonder they aren't running so well. Lube em up and they'll not only go faster, but last longer too, this is slowly killing the cars. =/

I hated hearing your Charger running on the track SQEELING, saying, "Oil Me, Oil Me!". You knew better, because you already oiled the other 2 cars. Obviously your great uncle took WAY better care of that set up than you are. Wake up! That vintage set is not something that can be replaced, you burn up the motor and it is lost forever.

Jim Furr I agree. I had oiled the charger with the rest of the cars but it didn't make the squeel go away... hopefully with some further trouble shooting i can eliminate the angry charger noise.

MrTrenbo the brushes in the car might be dirty. In which case they need to be cleaned or replaced. Just try not to race it too much btw nice track 😀 always love seeing old aurora tracks being used
