Vintage Mego Shazam - Repairing old Repairs - Toy Polloi

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Often when I get toys to fix they have already had a repair done in the past. And this MEGO Shazam is a great example of that. Over all the figure looks great, but due to some badly done repairs on the outfit it looks less than perfect. So time to undo some old repairs and redo them properly.

I enjoyed this video a lot! I read the Captain Marvel comics as a young child (early 1970s). Around that time here in the US, we also had a Saturday morning program with a live-action Billy Batson/Captain Marvel...the comic in those days was still called Captain Marvel, but the TV show was called Shazam! (it was combined with Isis, it was called the Shazam!/Isis Power Hour, IIRC) The white thread/sewing machine repairs make me think the original young owner of this toy had it repaired by a parent...I remember my mother complaining that changing the thread color on her sewing machine was a pain...

I had the 8" Mego Spiderman, Cpt. Kirk and Mr. Spock and "Planet of the Apes" Cornelius. I used to tie about a foot of thin cotton string with a simple loop knot around Spidey's hand and swing him from couch to chair and all over the house and have him and Kirk and Spock kick poor Cornelius's butt on the regular. Poor Cornelius. Why couldn't it have been Ursus... Or better yet the Goblin ?

Looks as good as new! Getting a really good colour match is key, if the match isn't great you'll soon find that 'close enough' often becomes 'not close enough'.

you should replace the lightning bolt with one going in the right direction and repaint some of the missing paint on the head because the repainting part could be easily used on other figures

@TNT SK8 the great thing about Megos is that you don't have to buy them intact. The parts can be bought piecemeal and assembled. I'm putting together a vintage MEGO Green Goblin together that way right now. You just need patience.

It isn't always as easy as choosing the right color thread for the seam though. I recently re-sewed a Green Goblin bodysuit and had to get magenta thread to match the rest of the seam even though it was on the green area of the body. Iron Man uses yellow thread on the red areas of the bodysuit too.

Shazam is one of those characters I wish I had more toys of. He's more rare than many Vintage Mego dolls. His Super Powers figure is very expensive, and they cancelled his DC Icons (recent line) figure.

There are a few nice DC Direct ones and the DC Universe Classics, which is the only one I own, is really good. The Multiverse movie figure looks really good though I've never seen it in hand and no doubt the movie sequel will get a figure from McFarlane.

I think Mego's reasoning for the yellow cape was that they were afraid a white cape would get dirty during playtime. Plus a comic accurate cape would probably cost more and Mego was about pinching pennies.

1, the lightning bolt is yellowish gold not white. 2, his cape iwhite with yellowish gold trim around it and gold 4-leaved clovers down one side. 3, his boots fold over at the top. And finally 4, he originally belongs to Fawcett Comics, not DC.

The little scissors from your Wife's sewing kit are very good! Having to recently start repairing some of my own clothes and trying to recall when I did Home Economics at Comprehensive School about 40 years ago I have sewed a few things like that. I found a very useful tool in Poundland a couple of years back. It was a small Seam UnPicking tool/Hook and blade. It came in it's own sleeve which also mounted very small sharp scissors with in the box like body structure. Very much like on your penknife! Very useful and only a pound!! Made me wonder about Poundland? Sometimes they do stock very good quality Tat indeed! Always wanted a Mego Shazam. Never ever found one!
