VINTAGE LENS REVIEW: MAMIYA 50mm f2

Ойын-сауық

This little lens caught my eye while perusing eBay and I thought I would give it a try... This is what I think of it. Dont buy it, get something else with your money...

That lens came with my first 35mm -- the 500 DTL, Seemed fine to me -- enough so that I kept it when trading in the body for a used meterless Pentax H3v after the Mamiya came back from it's second trip to the shop. (Loved that camera's spot metering mode, but mechanically it just wouldn't take, hard, frequent use.) That said, I also had an ill-considered penchant for developing in Microdol. Then enlarged with the Voss triplet thrown with a Bogen enlarger ... I'm not sure if it would have made any difference if the taking lens had been a Leitz Summicron. Despite all that, I still managed to snag my state's high school newspaper "photographer of the year."

I picked up a copy of this lens at my local camera store a couple weeks ago. Didn't know anything about it, but I took it for a spin and was surprised. I shoot with Olympus m43 and wide open it's quite hazy and has significant CA on the edges, but it's an interesting combination of traits that can work to it's advantage depending on composition. Stopped down it's much sharper than I was expecting, especially after seeing the results at f2. I think it's down to the preferences of the person behind the lens, but I totally understand why someone would not recommend it. I actually wouldn't recommend it either, but it's worth it if you can find one for cheap.

Found a copy of this lens today at a flea market for 20BGN ( 10 EUR , 11 USD if you are in the States or 8 GBP , if you're in UK). It came with a Promaster Spectrum 7 UV polarizing filter. The lens didn't have the original front and back caps, instead it was fitted with caps from a Helios lens. I'll give it a spin someday with my Praktica MTL 5B camera.

Subbed...Just scored a Mamiya Sekor 58mm 1.8, a (all of these are non series 1 vmc...which are very good for the $) Vivitar 70-300 4.2-5.8, another Vivitar 75-200 f4.5 with og vivitar doubler and a Sears 80-200 4.5 macro (3rd copy they seem to be in every bundle) or $45... Love the Mamiya omgoodness. Love your content.

I have the silver and black version of this lens, but otherwise I'm pretty sure it's the same. I noticed the same sort of play between the focus ring and base that you described, but something else I've noticed is that as pull in the focus it stops the aperture down slightly, or at least slightly when it's fully open, when you already have the aperture set to 16, it drops it down to something closer to 20, which is a big difference. There's a little bit of overturn to the focus ring when it's fully pulled in where this stop down sticks, so it's usable under that condition, but otherwise it's a bit of a cock tease when you're focusing.

Interesting observation, I never noticed it with mine. I really shoot stopped down except to control direct sun so that is probably why. The little lens does produce some cool results though, so it has character. I like that about old glass. 📸

I agree with your take on it, it's not particularly sharp and I don't think it has the most recognisable/unique rendering. I've heard some people say it's an amazing lens, so I'm gonna keep playing with it, but right now it's definitely not a lens id recommend.

Yeah, mine is definitely not that great. By contrast, I picked up a Pentax 55mm f1.8 that is quite nice and was either slightly cheaper or about the same cost. It is literally in my bag right now.

Ok.... it wasn’t anything to write home about other than the vintage lens “look” that most of these lenses produce. I mean it was good on color and distortion wasnt a problem, but it just never seemed sharp...all the images are soft, I would agree that some are probably my fault, but not all of them. 😉 Like I mentioned in the video though, I could have a trashed copy too. 🤷🏻‍♂️
