Still get a giggle at the "Catus" and that you have labeled it as a finished object. I love that you cut your hair, you look great in you fringe/ bangs. Can't wait to see your bow jumper finished. The blue color coming off on your needles and hands is odd. It seem like the manufacturer messed up with the yarn. I think I would email them with your delema and tell them of your disappointment with the yarn and it messed up your wooden needles in the knitting prosses. I think you said the first couple of yarn balls were OK but the reordered yarn was a disappointment. Who knows maybe they'll send you a gift certificate. Won't hurt to try because I bet your not the only one, and they should want to keep their customers happy. 😊

haha some things are destined to be other things.. and that mitten was destined to be a cactus 😂😂 Thanks :) I really missed having a fringe.. I feel much more ME with one. Even if it doesn't behave all the time haha I agree - the yarn was a definite mess up. I actually tried to contact the company but they have no way of emailing. They have a phone number and address in Norway but I don't fancy spending a fortune to call them and complain about a couple of balls of wool... I also can't reach them via facebook or instagram... I left a comment on their website but no reply. It's a real pity. I don't tend to buy yarn from them, but I just wanted to use up this colourway.. it's cursed haha

You’re making progress! I love your cactus, sometimes we need to remember that our time is precious too and not stress about an unfinished project. Love the idea of the vintage make along, will definitely take part. Thanks for sharing 😊

Yes exactly :) It's easy to end up getting stressed about something but then, if you take a step back, it's only knitting! And knitting is fun! Especially when it is actually funny in the end heehee Yay! That's wonderful to hear :) I look forward to seeing your vintage knits :)

The mitten cactus is AMAZING Emily, and it’s definitely my favorite FO I’ve seen lately 🤩Such a sweet reminder to enjoy our knitting efforts, regardless of the outcome 💖 I would LOVE to join in on a MAL! I don’t have a knitting community irl, so I really look forward to the connection I have with knitters online. I’m currently knitting the Lili Bolero from Timeless Tyrolean, the spring skirt from squid school, and I’ve just decided I need to make a jumper to wear to my son’s baseball games in his team colors 😂 I have always been a monogamous knitter, so this is a whole new world for me 😅

Hahaha yes - knitting should definitely be fun.. and this cactus makes me laugh a lot! Yay! I'm so excited to see your projects pop up :) I would love to get the Timeless Tyrolean book - it looks really chock full of loveliness :) A knitted skirt is something I am dreaming of. I have a thick one that was a jumper, now turned skirt, but I like the idea of a flowy one.. perhaps with lace details... *sigh* I love knitting haha Haha welcome to the world of knitting ALL the things at once :)

I think the make along is a great idea. I'm very new to vintage knitting, but I've got the rainbow jumper that I would just love to make. I'm a bit intimidated by the sizing etc with vintage knits but this has inspired me to give it a go. Happy birthday for next month, hope you have a fab time with your mum xx

Yay thanks :) I think it will be fun to see everyone's creations coming alive. Do you have the original pattern for the rainbow? I know Susan Crawford made the Jojo but it does involve buying the whole book. It's just that one has lots of sizes and is based off of the original. It's not too bad to adjust patterns, once you have your gauge. I highly recommend either looking up some KZreads or blog posts on how to adjust them using your gauge, or joining Squidney's vintage school of knitting on Patreon, even if it's just for one month. Then you'd see her calculation sheets on how to do it :) Thank you :) I am looking forward to her visit :)

I do have the original pattern that I purchased from Lauren of The Vintage Knitting Party. She has a video on her channel on how to grade vintage knitting patterns, and I will definitely check out some others before I start. I just need to decide on what colours and what yarn to use. I'm thinking that a cotton or cotton blend would suit me better, so that I can wear it comfortably in the warmer months xx

I love the cactus 🌵 I also think your green jumper is going to look fabulous. You are much braver than I would have been! I would have thrown it on the floor, cried, swore and then put it in a bag for someone to find when I leave this world 😂 I love the idea of a mal, I would love to say I will definitely knit along with you but in reality, I am still at the procrastinating stage of my vintage sweater knit 😂😂 I will definitely look up the #️⃣ though and offer my support that way! I hope you have a fantastic birthday and a fabulous time with your mum. See you soon ❤

I think because I have such an obsession with it, and it's taken a hold of my sanity, I have the perseverance for it. I have other projects that may well see the same fate as you described, and stay in their bags for years to come haha Haha procrastination is something I'm very good at myself.. perhaps you need to watch some TV shows like All creatures great and small, or home fires, just to spark the enthusiasm back up :) Equally, I'll except the hastag support :) Thank you :) I'm looking forward to her visit!

I hope you enjoy wearing that sweater you steeked I would have just undone it all and knitted it again. It would not be the first time either. I have many stories of frogging my work. Painful but once it’s done no turning back. The bows are cute, forgotten how I did my bows as it was such a long time ago I knitted the bow sweater in various colours.

After a year of not ripping it out, and trying all other ways to conquer it, I realised if I don't steek it now, I'll never reknit it.. it's weird because I've knit the same jumper two other times, but for some reason, undoing this one just felt all kinds of wrong haha Maybe it was destined to be the guineapig for my steeking... it was very exciting to plan out how to do it and test out new techniques for it. That makes it a success already :) I have planned so many bow jumpers whilst knitting this one.. so many colour options.. maybe I'll have to do a rainbow one haha Your valentines day one is beautiful :)

@@emilykatemadethis agree steeking is not something I have tried before but I guess with fair isle knitting one day I will be faced with that option. I don’t often knit in the round I just follow vintage patterns to their original instructions on two needles. Berets are good on circulars though but fiddly when less stitches on my needles haven’t got to grips with DPNs yet!!

  • @emilykatemadethis

I'm actually looking forward to having fingering weight yarn so that I could actually follow the pattern as it's written. It would be the right size for me, if I didn't only have sport weight yarn haha but to be honest, learning how to adjust the stitch count/gauge gives me a bit sense of achievement and sense of freedom. I can adjust what I want and when to make it fit and I like that :) Also steeking. It's an added bonus to just try out in projects to learn new techniques. Oh DPNs nearly stopped me from knitting socks! I am so glad I learnt magic loop because socks and DPNs were a no go for me haha

I tried knitting backwards back in 2019 when I was annoyed about constantly rotating the project to work the next row. It was okay but I just didn't find it that enjoyable. It takes brain power to fight against your muscle memory 😂

Hey Miss Emily, I love how your rebuild is going on the Chevron and cant wait to see it. Regarding that yarn issue you had, I wondered if it was aged sewing oil on the yarn that did that thing to your needles. I only thought that because other oils get very sticky and tacky with age and are right pain to clean off. I found straight dish liquid removes old oil. Tea tree oil is also a good remover of sticky things, it works wonders on sticker residue on jars. If you were to used it on needles, I would do a spot test first though. Regarding your painful purling, at the risk of you probably hearing of it 100 times before, have you tried Portuguese knitting, verypink has a good tutorial on it. I tried it and didnt mind it, I have often considered giving it another whirl. It maybe the tensioning with the yarn around the back of the neck which put me off, but you can get clips to put on your shirt front, and then run the yarn through that. While I watched your poddie I was working on my sunflower amigurumi petal, which I unravelled about 5 times, and only half finished by the time your podcast was done. You are too distracting Emily, I should have stuck to my infinity scarf. Oh, ditto on the fingering yarn projects, I have decided if you are doing 4ply or less you are banned from time limits and must have other wips on the side for satistfaction and sanitys sake, then you can just enjoy the ride as you please. :)

Hello :) I have one sleeve attached - onto the second one now :) yay Oh how interesting... yes perhaps it was oil.. because it was seriously tacky. I will have to try that tea tree oil trick next time. I used dish soap and it did get it off, but now the needles are not as smooth. The wood didn't really like getting wet it seems. I did wonder if I could rub oil into them, like I do with wooden spoons and chopping boards, but I don't want to then have that oil transfer onto a project *gulp* I think the thing that puts me off Portuguese knitting is that it's harder to knit from that set up. So When I do ribbing (eeeendless ribbing!) or textured knits, then it just gets cumbersome. But I think I'll try it in the future just out of interest. One can never learn too many new tricks :) It's not always pain exactly, but my hands get very tired. But that's not very hard, it seems! Holding a book open or typing hurts, so it doesn't take much ! Haha sorry for the distraction! But hey - you got halfway through ;) Oh gosh yes - definitely need more than one project when such a teeny tiny amount of progress shows after an hours work haha Now... to get to grips with this second sleeve....

Go, go, go, this is getting exciting now, like waiting for the results of a race, but click clack style, giddyup on that sleeve. I want to look into this sticky oil business more, I have a couple of handy cleaning books to study, among other things, I'll get back to you, don't use the tea tree oil yet it may be risky. Watch this space.

@@emilykatemadethis I learned from Shannon Lush the Queen of clean here in Aus, the way to approach a cleaning problem is not how we would usually do, ie, throw everything at it from under the kitchen sink and make the problem 3 times worse than it was at the begginning. But rather, find the origin of the stain, or thing causing the stain, then consider the material the stain is on, then find the final solution that considers both these problems, she said it better than I just did but I hope you get the picture. Also spot test, never dive in unless you are 100% sure youve got it or you may wreck everything. Ok, so after some research, Patons and Baldwins yarn use to use Gargoyle (aka vaccume, aka mobileoil) as their supplier of oil for their spinning machines. Looking at your yarn, I confess I only guessed, it looked like it must be from the 60's or 70's and assumed it was made in Great Britain or Europe. So all of this info led me down rabbit hole of vintage books for sale teasing me to tell me all about the types of oils Gargoyle reccomends for spinning equipment, as well as numerous pdfs of articles such as a Scientific America magazine article about the benefits of cotton manufacturing in 1950s in the USA, but in all of that I found nothing. My final discovery was an article, which I actually rejected at the beginning for its simplicity, genius at work here, which pointed to the oils most commonly used in wool spinning. Judging by the print in the text book piece, the pdf I was reading wasnt dated, Im assuming its from the 1950's - 1970's. The oils used at the time in spinning, were olive oil (rarely due to cost and only used on finer yarns), lard oil (commonly), oleine (I believe a vegetable based oil), or red oil, like oleine oil but red (no so commonly). All oils were usually emuslified (mixed together) with borax and or amonia before use. Mineral oil aka Baby oil was desirous to use, but not good to use because it didnt work as well with the emulsifiers and was harder to remove from the wool.......which leads me to suspect that could be the culprit. So the solutions to removing olive oil, lard oil, and oleine oils are, dish liquid mixed with water, as you have alread done, and if that doesnt work, dish liquid and a little tea tree oil mixed with water should work on the other oils, if it is the gentler oils that your are dealing with. Another thing that is useful with oils is a paste of plaster of paris and water, let it dry and brush it off, apparently it soaks up the water, I dont know how well that will go on knitting needles though but apparently it does well on driveways. But mineral oil, the one I suspect it is, is petroleum based, so if those methods dont work you need to use white spirits aka mineral spirits, dabbed on the wood and then cleaned off. I will send you an email with a link to an article I found which may help. Anyway, hope that helps.

The yarn is from Drops which is a Norwegian company very much alive today. But with dead customer service it seems. But nonetheless, these ideas are still very useful and I will have a go with the tea tree a little later. Thank you for all your research :)
