Vintage Knitting | Knitting the 1940's Star Serenade Jumper 🧶

Welcome to a Vintage Edition of Emily Kate Made This: Knitting the 1940's Star Serenade Jumper
#knitting #knittingpodcast #handmadewardrobe #vintageknitting #vintageknits #1940s
Today’s knit is a 1940’s knit known as the Star Serenade Jumper. It's from the company Paragon which was a New Zealand company, as far as I'm aware.
Today's episode is all about me making this gorgeous jumper.
I used Ullcentrum 2ply wool (the green is a Gotland base, the white is also Ullcentrum but I'm not sure which sheep breed). This is a Swedish yarn company.

I am so thankful that there is at least one person out there that understand the "rather knit half a sweater then a swatch". So thank you🤭😉 Your jumper is stunning. Love the color, the puff sleeves, the colorwork.. everything😍 Happy new year🎉

This sweater turned out so well! I have been so busy and ill that I haven't been able to keep up with your vlogmas, but I am planning to go back and watch them later, once I'm feeling better. I've definitely overdone it and my chronic illness is flaring.

thanks :) Ah no worries.. I know a lot of people don't watch vlogmas' until later, sometimes even in summer haha but now you know it ends well... the jumpers do get finished in time ;) Sorry to hear about your flare up.. I hope you feel better soon :)

You are such an adventurous knitter!! I’m inspired! I’ve been knitting for years, but only started garment knitting this year…I hope someday I have the confidence to “freestyle” a pattern like you’ve done here… beautiful work! Squid School is definitely helping me tackle patterns with more confidence.

Oh it's perfect, Emily!!! Congrats! The fit looks sooo true to style, especially with the cinched-in waist and the little flare above it! (Kudos for 3 inches of 2.25mm ribbing... I can be patient with my knitting, but THAT would have pushed me to my limits!) Interesting technique about the poofy sleeves, they look super neat, including the buttons. Very tempted to improvise a vintage style jumper now, using that very same construction! (And yeah, I'm basically team "not on my - or any - swatch" too, so things that start out with a smaller portion are the best...🤪) Btw, your large hat is adorable - if a super oversized beret suits anyone, it would be you! Happy 2024, hope to meet again some time this year!

Thank you :) I'm really pleased with it :) haha yeah I think it was easier to knit the ribbing because I was sick and I didn't need to use my brain! The poofy sleeves are definitely more fun with this technique. No ripping out and trying to get them even on both sides again for me - woo hoo! I'm going to try a hood next time... maybe that won't be as enormous haha but thanks.. I'll try and remember that when I go out and feel so silly :p Happy new year :) Yes that would be lovely to meet again :)

I'm a huge fan of your jumper and I think it looks perfect on you!! I also can't stand the too tight bind off feeling. To combat it if I bind off at the hem I make an extra stitch every second purl in the row before I bind off. So i bind off as k, p, k, p, p and this resolves the problem without having to resort to an ugly extra stretchy BO with yarn overs in it. And then the same size needle can be used. Only use it on tight bind offs around the waist or arms though as adding extra stitches can cause it to flare horribly if used around the neck.

thanks :) oh I've not heard of that technique, thanks! I'll try to remember it for my next cast off on the hem :)

@@emilykatemadethis it's not really a technique per se, it's something I do now after running into the same problem you described. I don't like my cast off row looking big and loose with a different needle size, so this way blends in really well,

The light fingering you have would be good for 8 stitches per inch, you probably would like the designs in the jack frost knitting books

That's a good idea. I do have a few of those booklets digitally... The problem is choosing which pattern 🤭 I believe Jan is originally a Jack frost pattern and I have that one on the list. The problem I have with the light fingering weight yarn I have is that it's so thin and it doesn't floof up to fill in the gaps after blocking.. that's how I ended up in sport weight territory. One day, when I've used more of my yarn I'll actually buy fingering weight yarn 😂

I too have given up on swatches after too many disasters. I once got the tension spot on blasted along and finished up with the front 5” too wide. Even half a stitch makes a huge difference. I do not see how a 4” square can be used to judge tension over a garment say 22” wide. The weight of the knitting will make a difference for a start.

absolutely agree with you :) that half a stitch can change everything, and when I measure my knits, I see that some sections are say 7 st/2.5cm and others 7.5 or even 8... there's no way I'd ever get an accurate measurement haha I'm glad I'm in good company ;)
