Vintage FET Condenser Microphone Shooutout (Neumann, AKG, Sony)

Музыка

Here's a shootout of popular FET Condenser Microphones from the 1970's to late 1980's! This video features the Neumann U47 FET, AKG C414EB (W/ Original Brass CK12 Capsule), Neumann U87, Neumann KM86, and Sony C38B. The goal here was to compare FET condensers at the lower end of the price spectrum (the Sony C38B being the most affordable at under $1k), and at the higher end (the C414EB has shot up in value lately due to the sought after Brass CK12 Capsule). Let me know what you think about these microphones and their differences!

AKG C414EB with brass capsule BEST allround microphone ever made to this day. Natural and sounds amazing!

I personally believe the brass cap 414 EB is the greatest solid state mic ever made, but in this video the KM86 overall sounded best.

Great demo The KM86 was phased into Motown in 1967/68. Motown's mic locker in 1961 and 1962 was two Sony C37As, two U 47s, two RCA 77DX, two Electro-Voice 666. When they had their first hits, they bought six Neumann U 67s, and then later another ten U 67s.

First Impressions: Acoustic - U47 FET (solo acoustic) KM86 (in a band mix). Low mids in each of these is excellent and compliments the Gibson's midrange. Overheads - C414EB (complete picture, one mic) KM86 (in the mix, multi mic). Blown away by the low end in the 414. Crispy, snappy and deep. 86 is so smooth. Kick - U47FET (sounds like a record), 414EB (soul, hip hop), Sony C38B (modern rock). All three would work as kick out mic. Piano - More of a ribbon on upright piano guy. But KM86 had nice detail. U47FET sounds great as well. Electric Guitar - U87 was the only one that pushed 1k up in a way that works for me in a band context. Thanks for the demo! Wish I could afford a pair of KM86's 💸

The U47 & C38 were neck and neck for me. I just liked the way each source sounded on these mics, both very versatile. The C414 and U87 was a hit or miss. Don’t get me wrong neither two were slouches, they sounded great, the other two just stood out to me IMO. The one that surprised me the most was a KM86. To me it was right behind the U47 and C38. It was a little on the bright side, which gave it a bit more excitement in the HF without it sounding thin. Overall great job on capturing these vintage mics! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Are you even aware that all major recording studios are usling AKG C414EB with brass capsule on anything. The most multi purpose microphone out there?

I actually found the C-38b to be the most versatile of the bunch. It wasn't always the winner but it was suitable on all sources and in the top half of the bunch on all the sources here. The brass capsule 414 for instance - a deserved classic no doubt - is still quite polarizing by comparison. In other words, far less versatile and that was displayed in this excellent video. There are things it's absolutely _perfect_ on and then many other things it's just far too bright for. The u47 FET, although I didn't find it as universally useful as the C-38b, is still a _very_ useful mic. It is of course _the_ microphone for "kick out." I also feel it's a top 3 all go-to condenser mic for bass and guitar amps/cabs and I also think you could mic an entire drum kit with nothing _but_ u47 FET's and get a fantastic result. I was really impressed by the Neumann KM86 though and think that the things it worked on, it was _wonderful_ on. You can hear why Pink Floyd used a pair of them for piano at Abbey Road. They really shot up my wish list.
