Vintage DB990 Tractor for $500.. Will it Run??
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I saw this old David Brown 990 pop up for a bargain so I snapped it up, even if it doesn't run, it will make a good spare parts machine for my other 990.. My missus isn't pleased, for some reason she thinks we already have enough tractors.

Love the calm, casual “had to tow it through a stream..” wish there was video of that!

I’m not mechanically inclined but your videos have inspired me to do more. I really like the way you slowly and methodically go over everything.
I admire your hardworking spirit and that environment is awesome.
The smile on your face when it starts... “I took a calculated risk and it looks like paying off. Yes!!” Great job.

Marty, she's a 1965 - 1968 early series Selectamatic she has a AD4/47 motor not a AD4/49 like your other 990. Common with these old girls is the rear oil seal which isn't a seal but a oil flinger and over time they get blow bye and push oil onto the clutch and oil inpregnant it and slip. Pull the dipstick and check for blow bye. Have genuine db workshop books on this tractor if you need and I can scan and email them to you

Great find Marty, between me and my father-in-law we have a 780, 880 and a 995. He bought the 880 new in 72 and the 995 used about 25 years ago; I found the 780 20 years ago. These old DB’ are like the “Energizer Bunny” they just keep on going. 👍
Marty, a man can never have “enough” tractors. Unless the misses is threatening divorce. Cheers.

You got lucky on this one too Marty. So strange that someone would just let a machine sit there and rot. Most owners are just too lazy to keep there equipment in good order as well.

With that was said in the story and the condition of the fuel filters, I wonder if they forgot to bleed the system properly and it caused issues. A costly mistake, or a worthwhile venture. Next time I'll get a David brown project instead of a yanmar at this rate 🤣
@roveradventures

Very true. Rule of thumb in my area is if its a small tractor say a kubota L2000 or Yanmar YM2420 (both of which I owned (kubota still around) filter changes are a must. I could never get the yanmar running paid 800 for it. Sold it after investing a bit for 1500 to a friend who works on diesels and wanted a small tractor for his land. It would not start when compression was engaged and disengaging would just cause it to turn almost 1K rpm. Thermostart worked but didn't help, valves were proper, no water in oil. Turns out after he checked heads, pistons, and other things the front seal on the injection pump was leaking. Didn't expect it, but at the time I wasn't sure on keeping it as it didn't move (hydro/shuttle shift trans) so you couldn't even attempt to roll start, and the fact that the exhaust pointed up with no sign of a cover for years (mud wasp nest blew out of it when it was trying to start) i was expecting water to have ate into the liners.

Marty you're a conservationist of the best sort. I was taught fix it if possible, repurpose it if needed, if all else fails part out what is salvageable and recycle the rest. My folks got married at the height of the great depression. They were appalled at our modern throw-a-way society. Hope you and yours are safe and healthy.
Perfect timing on exhaust removal with goat sound
Great 500 bucks worth. David brown tractors are very popular with classic farm machinery collectors over here in the UK because of the Aston Martin connection. Got a mate with three of them. Great watching you bring her back to life!
Well done Marty! Terrific to hear her running again and as you say, she does indeed sound mint. We had that same model David Brown 990 and it could pull loads that other makes of higher horse power tractors couldn't - an absolutely brilliant tractor, as indeed all the Browns were.
Marty you are a lesson in how to be impeccable. Thanks mate.
It’s amazing how there are some people out there with stuff like this, they might tinker with the problem then lose interest and just let it sit then eventually get rid of when all it was to run was a simple cleaning and checking filters. I’ve gotten a couple of lawn tractors and mowers that people say they don’t run....cleaned the carb, fresh fuel and runs like new. Love these videos!
I love watching you bring these old machines back to life.
by the way.. a TIP for starters on equipment that have sat a long time.. short the solenoid top to bottom post.. this spins the armature and does the commutator a nice cleaning without load.. don't let if freewheel spin under power for long.. just touch and let it spindown.. touch and let it spin down.. no use exploding the armature with excessive speed. and the spin down without electrons jumping the brushes is really a good way to clean the surfaces..
Marty you have the best luck finding something old and making it run . The ride of the the tlr was fun. Great video as always.
Man im addicted to ur videos. They r so relaxing. Keep up the good work
That was far easier of a start than I was expecting. The new tire on that thing is worth what you paid for the entire machine!
In a word, BRILLIANT! Well done making the old girl talk. Another win for the Kiwi. Just a suggestion, put some wood on the angle iron before you press that ram into submission. Great job, thanks for sharing.
hi marty, im from norfolk uk. i can remember these old david browns, from my childhood in the 1960s/70s. they were everywhere, nearly every farm had one. your 990 was only sleeping, it just needed a nudge to jump back into life.

The fuel issue there is no fuel in tank! Tell these owners you normally get 500$ removal fee ( but) today is their lucky day if you can get running and drive onto trailer. Yesterday I couldn’t spell mechanic today i is a mechanic!!!!!🙂

Congrats. you found another nice project to work on . David Brown tractors are one of the easiest tractors to work, especially the engine
I have an old Agria 9900E and had issues where it kept running out of fuel, turns out the in tank filter had fallen to bits and chunks of rust were blocking the fuel lines. Runs like a beast now.
Never too many tractors. Love your channel always look forward to new videos
Good find. We recently picked up a Case DB 990. With a dedicated fork fitted to it. I replaced the fuel filters and cleaned the sediment bowl and runs very nice. Your previous db video was extremely informative on changing the other filters and oil levels. Thanks. We laughed reading your blurb about your missus and enough tractors. My wife said, sounds like me and my cast iron cooking pots...
What a great find. $500 for a running working tractor. Here in Canada that is a $2500 - $3000 tracctor.
Great find and watching. Bird sounds are lovely too.

Ok so imagen how the directions where to the guy's house, take the road north then cross a river then diver thru the woods to a field and you there, it's easy to find you should have NP finding it
Seems like a good bargain for $500. She'll serve you well indeed!
Sounds good you find a lot of deals on tractors it's nice that you find the ones that people neglect and don't bother doing any maintenance on
Marty, I have been watching you for a while. I live in Central Florida in the USA. You make me want to go out and get a tractor. I have no idea what I would do with it because I do not have the land for it but I am amazed what you do. Please keep making the videos!
Loved seeing your excitement. Another tractor saved. 😃
What a bargain $500 for a perfectly good machine what a good buy Marty 👍👍
Another great video Marty as always can’t wait for the next one. Wish I could find tractors that cheap here in Canada lol
Fair play Marty, I love watching you find the issues and get them running, you are first class and so knowledgeable👍
The David brown 990 used to be a great pulling tractor in the UK the first if the 990s were really good too they were red and then they made the white one that's the newer one
I believe all these machines that Marty has brought home come to life when he's not around. The new machine is greeted with welcome to heaven, Marty will take care of you and you'll get to go to work like we're supposed to be, you know like Toy Story, but with tractors, graders, excavators, the list goes on....nice work mate!

Thank you again Marty. I don't find old tractors but I do find super deals on tools and other equipment. It makes it all that more enjoyable when your using the stuff. Have a wonderful day.
Great vid Marty! I love these old machines, and you bringing them back to life! 👍
From a fan in Massachusetts. You've got the luck........ and the skills. Great combination!! Great find, Great job!
A tip with degraded rams Marty, fine emery tape and diesel applied to the shafts brings them back if they have it in them!
Marty Daam, another DB 999 for $500 with a loader too. Gawd , and it started up, purred like a kitten. Those DBs were well made, you are one lucky guy:)
I can only marvel at your skill in fixing mechanical things.
Great work, just added a thousand to the value getting it running, sweeet.
My great grandfather was a David Brown dealer/serviceman during the early 1950’s to the late 1960’s.
Ah, this brings back memories from my childhood at my uncle's farm in the late 70s. He only bought David Browns. If my memory serves me well (it might not 😊) I think he had two 880 selectamatics, and a 990 with cab and power steering. A few years later he entered the 4WD world with a 1490. Thanks for putting up these videos, Marty T. It is always a pleasure to watch them.
He nonchalantly killed a poisonous spider lol. What I'm surprised about is he never seems to blow hydraulic lines on these old machines. My father bought a 50 year old backhoe/dozer, a small one, like 5000 pounds. Every time he used it he blew a hydraulic line until they were all replaced.
Cool Video, I know the feeling when the engine starts.
Its amazing what a bit of basic maintenance can achieve! I really like your approach to troubleshooting.
..You can never have too much fun or too many tractors..lol...good one, keep safe..
Great job Marty, looks like you have a new toy. Thanks for sharing.
Watching the type of polishing ramrods that seem oddly satisfying.

I was iffy on it when I first saw the looks of it, but I figured if anyone could breath life back into her, it would be you. I wasn't disappointed.
Marty, I like watching your down to earth video's, look forward to your next one.
That is SO AWESOME, what a bargain of a machine for $500, I watched the cylinder straightening video prior to this one, my fault, my error, thanks for explaining the process in bleeding and cleaning fuel system filters and bleeding the system, I am very weak on diesel troubleshooting so I always as looking for anything to help bring my skills up a notch on the belt. Thanks for being REAL.... AWESOME smile on your face when this old girl LIT OFF....well DONE... Sending you greetings from TEXAS USA>

This was a good find. One thing to note, with the depth control/position control lever behind the quadrant lever, when you change its position you should always hold the quadrant lever fully back against the spring or I’m told you can cause damage inside the valve chest. Good video.
