/ @ajrestoration Welcome back Ladies and Gents, we have a Vintage Cast Iron Cow Sizzle Plate that needs some love! Since you liked the Cast iron Cauldron restoration so much, we thought we'd do another cast iron restoration.
With that said, I hope you enjoy the video.
If you have any suggestions for improvement, or compliments share them below!
Here is the seasoning process I followed.
Begin the seasoning process by heating the cast iron piece in a 200°F/100°C oven. When it’s reached the temperature (15-30 minutes), remove it from the oven and place it on a paper towel. Pour a little flaxseed oil onto the piece, and rub the oil all over the cast iron with your hands or a clean brush, making sure to cover every surface and crevice. Then, with a paper towel or rag, rub all the oil off. Continue until it looks as though there is no oil left on the iron’s surface. The iron should look dry instead of shiny with oil. Fear not: there is still a fine coating of oil on the piece, and that is just the amount you are looking for.
At this point, put the cast iron in a cold oven. Ideally, the cast iron should be placed upside down just in case you were not thorough enough in wiping off the bulk of the oil, and-for further safeguarding-you should line the next rack down with aluminum foil on the off chance you’d need to catch an oil drip. (If you wiped properly, all this will be overkill.) Finally, turn the oven to a baking temperature of 450°F-500°F or 200°C - 260°C, or essentially as high as your oven goes, and let the cast iron heat along with the oven.
When the oven reaches temperature, let the cast iron bake for 1 hour, then turn the oven off and let the cast iron cool inside the hot oven for another two hours. It should be cool enough to handle by that point.
The cast iron should now be starting to look a little black, but it will still be matte. In order to get that shiny proper seasoning, the process will have to be repeated until you are happy with the finish.
The end result, however, is definitely worth the seasoning time.

Steak houses used to use these to bring your steak to the table. They had a never-ending source of these serving trays kept SUPER hot. They'd grill your steak, transfer it to the super hot cast iron tray, and hustle it out to your table.

Nobody's going to mention that cross-fade for the before and after shot when you first set it down on the lazy susan? Because that was pretty slick editing. How long did it take you to match them up like that?

Most of the hard work lies with trying to place the item inline on camera during the before and after. The editing part behind it is rather simple.

Glad you did both sides and used flax seed oil!
The only thing I would’ve done differently would’ve been to polish the cooking surface to a mirror finish. It’s still fully capable of being seasoned afterwards and it makes the cooking surface extremely nonstick. That one looked pretty smooth anyway but there was a little bit of the original sandcast marks in the cooking surface.

Why exactly does the cast iron need the seasoning, with the oil? Is it just personal preference, or does the seasoned, baked cast iron actually transfer the flavoring to the meals you cook on it? We used to have a huge cast iron pan that we'd have to salt clean, then oil it, but I never quite understood why.
@AJRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
Seasoning is just oil baked onto cast iron through a process called polymerization. It gives your cookware that classic black patina. Seasoning forms a natural, easy-release cooking surface and helps prevent your pan from rusting.
Wish you would have showed clean up of the skillet.

Wonderful job! I would have just polished it till the cow couldn't moo (yes, stupid here :) ) But I wonder - what are those two bolts beneath for? Did the skillet have another component?
@AJRestoration
3 жыл бұрын
Haha it would look nice and shiny. Thos two bolts are used by some restaurants, the plate sometimes has a wooden base where thise slot in to and prevents it from slipping. The steak is then served on the plate to the customer to help in keeping the food warm, and it looks good.
How do you clean it after use? Do you just wipe off the grease?
