Vintage 1940s Marx Lumar Construction Plow Shovel Truck Restoration
I just finished this latest project, something special, a vintage 1940’s Marx toy Lumar construction plow shovel truck. This truck is 17 inches long, pretty big! I found it on Ebay for a pretty good price. It needed work as usual but the shape is classic and the truck is exquisitely made and colorful.
The Marx was founded by Louis Marx in 1919, at 1950’s the company was the largest toy manufacturer in the world and it was over one-third of all toys in the U.S. The Louis Marx was described as “The Toy King” and “The Henry Ford” of the toy industry. In 1972 Louis Marx sold his toy company.
It took a lot of time for this restoration. The big problem occurred with the plow of the truck, when painting those parts with the powder paint. The color of the paint was a little different, it didn't turn out glossy as expected, and for some reason there were black spots on the surface where the color was just lost! I've never had this happen before and just couldn't figure out what caused it. I didn't want to want to redo the whole thing right now, so I finally had to use some ordinary spray paint to finish the job. The color is good, but not totally consistent with the powder coating. This is the only regret I have with this project, the rest turned out great!! If I have time in the future I would like to go back and try to remove all the paint from the plow again and start over, do the powder coating again to match the rest the paint and get it perfect.
Originally I thought that the toy wouldn't require any replacement accessories, but there were two I discovered during the restoration process that I just couldn't restore, and I couldn't find the replacement parts anywhere. So I ended up making them myself. This took a lot of time and a couple of tries, but I'm very satisfied with the result and I think it's a very successful restore.

excellent as usual. what i get is back when these were made and the stuff we had we played with and they looked so used so quickly. your stuff it would be a shame because they truly look better than when new. great work

pretty cool. A neat part of American toy history! I bet some kid had a lot of fun playing with this in the sandbox. I like the new parts, and the colors look incredible. These toys were way before my time. Wish they still made stuff like this for kids now. Great restoration!!

Just a great restoration!! Unfortunately today's children would not know how to enjoy the excitement and joy a toy like this made a child feel because for that, they would have to use their imagination. I'm pretty sure that the color problem with the plow involves the original metal composition.

Wounded how long it actually takes to sand blast it?

1-2 hours, usually it takes more time to sand after sandblasting
why do some sandblastings look foggy like this than compared to others where it's so much more clearer? Is it because the camera is so close?
