Bill Hader's Vincent Price is like the practical goth friend who just wants everyone to stay in character during his murder-mystery roleplay birthday party.

Like the 2000 New Years' dinner my friend insisted we all come to when we were just out of high school...at our local small-town restaurant where seniors usually went. The restaurant was almost empty. He showed up dressed in a suit. He wrote his predictions for the new millennium in a notebook and made the rest of us write in it too. One of his predictions went something like, "The screams of the dying echoed down the avenues of the ruined city."

@@luisalcalabeltran7942 You have no idea. The guy was a riot. I could fill a book with stories of the crazy stuff he did, all the while being totally oblivious to it. At his medieval-themed wedding when he was 25, he made us all dress up in costumes. He picked out the costume pattern, which clearly said 'Renaissance' on it, and we had to buy the material. Our mothers sewed the costumes. We had white shirts, black pants tied with a rope, and black capes with black shoes. He controlled our costumes because he wanted to look better than us. The...blushing groom? But he ended up looking like a goth rocker. Just before the wedding, one of the groomsmen tripped at a construction site and broke his ankle. My friend called his dad to make sure he wasn't faking it to get out of having to stand during the ceremony. So the poor guy had to lean on crutches next to me, loaded on painkillers. He was a great friend, but unfortunately he married a woman who was horrible to me, and I couldn't stand to be around her eventually. I could not understand what he saw in her other than he didn't have a lot of success in dating. We all knew he would find someone weird, but we hoped she would be nice and weird and instead she was mean and weird. That was the end of our friendship. Most regrettably, because he was the one high school friend I would have genuinely liked to keep into adulthood :(

h d If I remember the story correctly, the skit was already written, and I think Jon was supposed to do it as Cary Grant. At the last minute someone thought it would be more funny as James Mason. They asked Jon if he thought he could do the impression. Without rehearsal or hesitation he came up with that brilliant performance on the spot.

Interesting fact: the James Mason part was originally written to be Dean Martin, which they changed right before air and quickly rewrote to take out all of the Rat Pack references but not quick enough so all the rest of the dialogue itself is exactly the same. Also, Bill Hader said that one of his most favourite lines from his entire run on SNL was "Save your sassiest sides for your windowless bars," which the audience didn't laugh at. Which is weird.

Hader had this wonderful tendency to do sketches with references so old, or old and obscure, that it's almost a given that the vast majority of his audience completely missed the majority of the jokes, and their brilliance. Hell, I'm a forty-something guy with a fondness for old Hollywood and even I was having to really struggle to figure out how well Hamm was doing James Mason. And yet, I really dig that about many of his sketches. It's like his send-up of the old Emmanuelle films, which is something that no one under 40 is probably going to entirely appreciate but for that small niche that does get it, it's fucking hilarious.
