Strongly agree with you Ken, it's so damm evident, old lens project (with low element in it) and an average to good autofocus that cover the standard of these days. This will be a perfect recipe for come back to a really interesting way to produce evocative to realistic images. I'm gonna order a 56 as soon as it'll be available here in Italy. Following your lens reviews and comparison since years back, King of lenses!!

Thanks so much, very useful. I had mine delivered yesterday, took some pictures and find them great. Now I know what makes them great. Indeed the feel is the same as it was from my vintage "Japanese Summilux", Canon Rangefinder 50mm f1.4. Same feel, but sharper and with good autofocus. WOW. Only paid $330 for it as you say. It was delivered by Viltrox from China by DHL, no issues whatsoever.

One of the reason why I heard a lot of owners of the Fuji 56/1.2 in the end sell it and hoping the new 50/1.0 would be better is its slow auto focus. I've talked to several fellow Fuji shooters and they said it has incredible picture quality but slow focus and cannot do as well on focus tracking their kids. I wonder if this is a good budget lens that does better in AF than the more expensive 56/1.2

I like the idea of clickless apertures, and love it on my mitakon because it's manual and it actually smoothly changes the aperture... but if it's going to be doing digital stepping anyways, it might as well have clicks.

Thank you for your review on this lens. I am so glad you focused on the low element count lens fidelity. Many new lenses are optically great but the images look bland and flat. That is the main reason I love shooting vintage lenses and the fuji 35mm f1.4. Glad to see someone making modern autofocus lenses with character.

The more I look at images from these Viltrox the more I'm gassing after them. My lenses are all old manuals but for the first time I'm seeing something that is looking like a no brainer for auto focus lenses. I'm really after the 85 but now the 23 has me seriously gassing. I need to stop looking at images from that until I at least get the 85 which is looking likely now. At these prices how can you complain?

it depends on the focal length that suits you. 56 is quite different to 35. Another factor to consider is aperture. Do you need f1.4 or is f2 fine both in terms of light and bokeh? Finally, the value: the 35 f2 by fujifilm will hold it's value very well while the viltrox will lose value like crazy as soon as you open the box. I got my 35 f2 second hand in a brand new condition and a year later I could easily sell it for a profit if I decided to. I doubt that'd be the case for the viltrox.

So the best Viltrox for X mount are in order: the 56 f1.4, the 85mm 1.8 mark II, the 23mm 1.4, the 85mm mark II and then the last the 33mm? I'd think so because when compared to one another the only one (imho) that doesn't make much sense to swap with Fuji is the 33mm, since now if you're out of budget like me you've got the xc 35mm f2 that is cheaper that anything else at the focal length. I'm not talking artistically but just budget-focused. I'd also say personally in the future if I'll get more portrait jobs I'll definitely get the 23 and the 56, they're on my bucket list!

Hey Ken, i have two magnetico sleep pads. I dont think i could sell it anywhere for its sleeping purposes but i was trying to think if i could sell the magnets or something inside of the mattresses. The only guy i could think to give this heavy shit to is you. If you want to buy this stuff and rip it apart and take all the stuff out of the mattress then let me know. This was the description given “Our Classic Pad provides a magnetic field that measures 5 gauss at the surface of an 8” mattress. The Classic sleep pad is 1 ½ “ thick. Our Sleep Pad is specifically engineered to deliver a pure negative (-) magnetic field when you are a minimum of 4″ away from the pad. This magnetic field, produced by permanent magnets, is a safe and natural energy source. Magnetico uses high-grade, ceramic alloy, permanent magnets, with a gauss rating of 3 950 gauss at the core. The dimensions of each magnet are 3/8 x7/8 x1 7/8. Hundreds of magnets are then laminated between two layers of foam in such a way that the pad acts as one large magnet. “

I have/had the X-E3, T5, T30 and have experienced this issue on all of them. I love the image on the back screen however when I import the jpegs into my phone via the usb card and reader something happens. The image is way too saturated, the darks are even darker and the contrast seems too high. It just does not match and I can not get them too match. I have tried on several iOS devices and they have the same issue. Have you experienced this ? Any ideas on what I can do to get the images to match ? I don't experience this with Fujifilm lenses. I'm after a lens at between 85mm and around 100 or 105. The wider the aperture the better. It's for low light and as candid as possible i.e. enough reach without being an obvious huge telephoto with slower speed. I have a Nikon 85 f1.8 but I'm not entirely happen with performance wide open. The Old Pentax Takumar 85mm f1.8 looks awesome but that lens is not cheap. Obviously no auto focus on these. Then at 105mm, the Nikon f2.5 looks to have spectacular image quality but less speed at f2.5. I could probably deal with that. The Viltrox as far as I can see is a really great black and white performer but I'm not sure I like the out of focus falloff with high colour. I use Sony and there is no way I'm buying a Sony lens but the price of the Viltrox for E mount is bearable.

Why is it that every time I go looking for example images for lenses like the Viltrox for example, I zoom in and see a bunch of noise when lighting conditions were even perfect? Are people incapable of holding a camera still to use low ISO? Image stabilisation these days lets you go really low.

I use only manual focus with video so autofocus is not an issue with me on the 16-80. But if auto focus is used...then other LM Fuji X mount lenses would be better. YMMV. PS...I love my 16-80. Great photo lens.

Hi there I found your video and found what you said interesting and you got me really curious, if you sound so enthusiastic and you are amazed by this lens then when people ask if they should sell their Fuji 56mm, then why not recommend to do so, I mean why not? What's so special about the Fuji 56mm version compared to this Viltrox for one not to sell it? Several years ago I did have the 56mm and yes at that time I was using it on the XT1 and heck yeah it was slow. Image quality wise I didn't think it was that great, a lot of people raved about it but I personally didn't see anything special. But now I'm curious and think I will buy this Viltrox version. Thanks.

Struggling to justify adding this one to my collection as I already get beautiful IQ for portraits with it. Here's my 2 cents: if you don't own any short, fast telephoto for portraits on your fuji system, and you don't need weather resistance, get the viltrox.

I'm not the video maker... but am just not a fan of "normal" lenses, which is what a 33mm amounts to on an APS-C camera. I find it a boring focal length, regardless how good it might be, and prefer something a little wider (22/23mm on APS-C) or a little longer (50-56mm on APS-C). But that's just me. Back in the good/bad old days of film, almost every camera came with a normal/50mm-ish lens on it. Throughout his life and career Henri Cartier-Bresson used a 50mm normal lens (on full frame/35mm film cameras) almost exclusively, and he managed to make some great photos with it.

Great review. I have a few questions, if that’s OK with you: - How’s the micro-contrast of the Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 compared to the XF50mm f/2.0? If I recall you loved it on the latter, especially in B&W. - Is the bokeh of the Viltrox comparable to the XF56mm APD? Any onion rings, cat’s eye, etc? - How’s the vignetting and corner sharpness? Obviously, it is to be expected, but a qualitative appraisal would be great. - When will you be posting the XF50mm f/1.0 review? (Sorry if I’m being impatient...) - Will you be testing the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 MARK II and compare it with its first iteration? Thanks for taking the time to review these lenses on your holiday. Hi Ken, there is nothing surprising in the new lenses from China - the companies Laowa, Viltrox and others have long been invited from Germany, Russia, Japan and other countries of very high-class optics, and the Chinese government also helps its companies in various fields, including the development of optical systems, this assistance is expressed in virtually free access to the use of a supercomputer. We can see the results with our own eyes. This trend will continue to develop. China has long been producing an almost complete range of high quality optical glass, including special types of glass, which ultimately allows the production of the highest quality lenses at very low prices. And what's wrong with that? Don't end users benefit from this? In my opinion, it will be very good if some Chinese manufacturer of high-quality lenses buys the photographic department of Nikon, then the whole world will see that it is possible to produce high-quality photographic equipment not for dragon prices, photographic equipment can become a mass product, and not like now, when according to the official According to statistics, only 0.3% of the world's population can afford to buy new cameras. They are also surprised that sales are not growing, forgetting that more than half of the world's population has an annual income of less than $ 1,500 (the equivalent, of course) and they cannot even feed their families. Also, statistics show that in the sector of expensive cameras, almost half of all sales already come from China, as well as China.

@@billmoyer3254 I think its a money by working of Chinese poeple, whole nation, and right economical politics, I also think there is nothing bad when leading party support own nation and developing the own country, also in China more then 98% of people fully support their own communist party. Otherwise its will be impossible to develop biggest country in the world, biggest population in the world. China has a longest state life history, first state in the world was created in China, in Anyang city, 3600 years ago, and chinese people knows very good what to do and which party to choose as own leading party. Because the pros and cons on the lens technically make it a “better” lens on paper but the visual differences in your photos to the human eye is negligible and if you already have one of Fuji’s 56mm lenses it doesn’t make sense to upgrade to this one. Essentially the, let’s say 5%, performance upgrade you get from the lens, doesn’t make any sense to invest in.

Sometimes my fuji shows a black screen and doesnt react to any buttons or on/off dial. So the only way out is to pull out the battery. I shoot mainly with Godox x1tf wireless trigger in manual mode only. The reason why i think the problem is with the lens is the fact, that those blackouts disappear if i push the bayonet button and try to remove the lens. While turning the lens a little, screen immediately turns on normal. Has anybody faced the same issue? I try to figure out what might have caused such behaviour of my camera and to consider buying a new kens or trigger) P.S. sorry for grammar in advance, I am from Odessa, Ukraine) Thank you one more time!
